Alhaji Bamanga TukurThe National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has put a lie to reports that he had resigned from office.

“I’m still the PDP Chairman. I did not resign as chairman. I have no reason to resign,” Tukur said last night in response to reports in a national newspaper that he had called it quits as chairman.

The ruling PDP is beset by a number of problems, which included the differences between the governors and the party leadership in some states, bickering within the National Working Committee and the Independent National Electoral Committee report, which questioned the election of 12 of the 16 NWC members, among others.
And with all this at the background came the report insinuating the party’s chairman had resigned.

But Tukur who called our correspondent over the telephone, said he was still in charge.

He spoke from Toronto, Canada where he is attending the Nigeria-Canada Investment Forum.

“I’m here in Toronto, Canada attending the Nigeria-Canada Investment Forum, working on how to bring investments to Nigeria.  I don’t have any reason whatsoever to resign. I am working on rebuilding the party and we are gradually making a success of it,” he said.

Asked where such impression that he resigned his office would have come from, Tukur said he did not know, but added that it was political.

“I don’t have any doubt in my mind that this is political. I suspect this could be the handiwork of those opposed to our resolve to ensure genuine transformation and reconciliation in the party in line with our Three-R campaign: Reformation, Reconstruction and Reconciliation.

‘Let Nigerians be aware that I would be back after the conference and I am still in place as PDP chairman,” he said.
