The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, confirmed yesterday that he had picked up his presidential nomination and expression of interest forms to vie for the presidency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Confirming the development, his spokesman, Imam Imam, said the speaker’s political associates bought the nomination form for him.
“Earlier today, some friends and political associates of the Speaker notified him that they bought the presidential nomination form for him,†he said.
THISDAY had exclusively reported that the speaker had decided to jettison his governorship bid and instead would vie for the presidency.
Despite Imam’s statement, it is believed that he had already purchased them since Monday as reported by THISDAY.
However, the switch of interest by the speaker from the governorship to the presidential contest got the support of his colleagues in the House.
A group of lawmakers from the opposition party, led by the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Publicity, Zakari Mohammed, stormed the national secretariat of the APC yesterday evening in solidarity with Tambuwal’s ambition.
The team comprising 10 lawmakers, who were said to be representing their colleagues in the House, went straight to meet with the party’s National Organising Secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso, at the secretariat.
After the short meeting, the legislators emerged looking excited but refused to speak to journalists who accosted them to ascertain what their mission was. But they refused to speak to the press.
THISDAY, however, gathered from a party source that the APC House members had jointly purchased the presidential nomination form for Tambuwal and had asked the party not to make the matter public, as they were yet to formally present the form to the Speaker.
