Following the rising profile of Bayelsa State as the leading tourist destination in Nigeria, the World Fashion Organisation is to build its Fashion University in the state.

The establishment of the proposed Fashion University will make the State one of the beneficiaries of such institutions to be built in the six continents of the world.

Speaking on the theme, ‘the Journey So Far in Nigeria,’ the Vice President of the World Fashion Organization, Europe, Mr. Borgogelli Percario said the choice of Bayelsa for sitting the fashion university was based on the state’s peaceful ambience and favourable disposition to the development of the arts.
The event, which attracted international fashion designers and personalities in the fashion industry, created excitement and investment interest among indigenes of the state and visitors alike.

In her welcome address, the Patron of the World Fashion Organisation Africa, Dr. Merit Gordon Obua, said though African designs were making waves in the western world in view of the ingenuity of the designers, the Fashion reception hosted by Bayelsa was not targeted as an entertainment event only but about showcasing the business and investment opportunities available in the country.

According to Obua, the approval by the World Fashion Organisation for a Fashion University to be built in Bayelsa was not without struggle as it was expected that the University will be used to fight poverty through the training and empowerment of youths to be independent entrepreneurs.

"This event is a project targeted at promoting the investment opportunity available in Africa. The event is to exchange ideas to fight poverty. Indonesia was like that and they used Fashion to change their story. India used fashion to add over 4 per cent to their GDP”, she said.
