She was a lone voice at the square,  but Joyce Schmidt hopes someone hears it.
The Polk County resident drove to Springfield, United States, last Sunday, wearing placards to protest the kidnapping of over 200 young girls from their school by the outlawed group, Boko Haram. in Borno State. Schmidt said she lived in Nigeria as a youth and attended boarding schools, while her father taught at a seminary in the country.

"I can so put myself in the place of those girls being trundled off in the night by men with guns." . "I'm here because I would like the media attention to stay focused on those girls so that the government of Nigeria will be shamed into taking some action. Joplin did a good job keeping the media focused on them after the tornado and it did help them.

"Just like a mosquito, you're never too small to make a difference," she said.
Schmidt wasn't deterred by the lack of a big turnout — well, any turnout — to show support for the kidnapped girls. She walked the square; her placards whipped by the wind, hoping her message might register with someone.

It did with Springfield resident, Richard Field, "I think there should have been a bunch more people out here," Field said, after walking up and talking with Schmidt to see what she was about. "I admire this lady's tenacity for being out here on her own. I may go home and make myself a sign and come back today."

Field called the kidnapping "terrible" and hoped the United States would use its military power to rescue them. "I generally am opposed to us getting involved in things overseas, but in this case, it seems like a humanitarian cause that I think we should offer any kind of help we could, whether it's logistics, or military, or even if it's boots on the ground. I think it's warranted in this case."
