(Codewit) Vice President of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan visited Finland on 14-15 May 2009. The Vice President Jonathan was accompanied by ministers and governors representing various states of Nigeria, and an extensive business delegation.
The purpose of the visit is to promote trade relations between Finland and Nigeria and establish contacts between companies. Other topics of discussion during the visit includes general political questions, parliamentary cooperation and crisis management issues.
During his visit, Vice President Jonathan met with President of the Republic Tarja Halonen, President Martti Ahtisaari and Speaker of the Finnish Parliament Sauli Niinistö. He also participated in an extensive Finland-Nigeria business seminar. The visit was hosted by Secretary of State Pertti Torstila.
On the 15th of May, The vice president also had meeting with Nigerian community in Finland. In the meeting, The President of Nigeria community in Finland Mr. Christopher Isiguzo welcomed the Vice president and his delegates. In his speech, Mr Isiguzo congratulated the present administration on their good moves to make Nigeria a better place and urged the Nigerian government not to rest in their oars. He suggested to the Nigeria authority to emulate other countries democracy and try to equip our country to meet the challenges of 21st century.
The Vice president Mr. Goodluck Jonathan later in his remarks expressed his admiration for the good works of Nigerian community in Finland. After his remarks, The vice president excused himself and left for an emergency call. The other ministers and governors were asked to stay behind to further the discussion and interaction with the Nigerian community.
During the discussion forum, many questions were asked and the Nigerian community in Finland also expressed their disappointment in the direction Nigeria is heading. Among the questions raised are the issue of power failures in Nigeria. Skilled migration and Brain drain issues, Youth education, Security , mechanized agriculture system, corruption, investment issues, Passport issues and other matters.
Nigeria has been forecast to be one of the fastest growing economies in the world in the next decade. The country has substantial oil, natural gas and mineral resources. With 150 million inhabitants, Nigeria is the most significant market area in Sub-Saharan Africa.
