Three people were confirmed dead in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, yesterday following heavy downpour that seized the city for several hours.

A middle-aged man was killed in the flood at Dandaru area of the city.
A few hours after, another commercial motorcyclist was said to have died in a similar flood near a river at Ijokodo junction in the city.

The third case was another unidentified man who together with his car, got drowned along a bridge at Omotara Agboola Midetel road, Ibadan.

The incident at Dandaru Mokola followed the rain that fell around 1p.m., which claimed the life of a man, simply identified as Ayuba, who presumably was about 23 years.
Five others were rumoured to have been swept away in a canal at the same Dandaru area of Queen Elizabeth Road, Ibadan.

Ayuba, who was said to be sleeping at the bank of the canal with five others before the rain increased, was discovered hanging on an object with his legs and hands dangling under the bridge.
Fire fighters with the assistance of some men in the area, pulled out the lifeless body of Ayuba with a thick rope tied round his armpits at 5.20p.m when the volume of the flood had reduced.

According to an eyewitness, Koyejo Akande, who knew Ayuba, "I usually see him with some boys here washing, fishing and playing. I knew him through another friend of mine. His mother had died, but he was staying with his grandmother at Iwo Road.
"The grandmother is popularly called 'Alhaja Olounje' (Canteen operator) at Iwo Road. Unfortunately the friend I knew who knows the shop of Alhaja is not here now," he said looking at the lifeless body on the ground.

It could not be ascertained whether the five others sleeping at the bank of the canal were actually swept away in the flood or not.

The other man drowned at Omotara Agboola Midetel road, was said to have missed his way into the river with his white Bluebird Nissan car.

Eyewitnesses said the victim was among several other road users mainly commercial motorcyclists, who were trying to pass through small bridge. It was also gathered that people tried endlessly to discourage him from taking the risk by crossing the bridge which was already covered in water, but he refused all plea and headed for unclear road during the heavy rain.

Sources in the area hinted that the man refused to wait for the flood on the bridge to come down as many road users, mostly commercial motorcyclists were also held at the side of the bridge.
