AHEAD of the 2015 presidential election, two groups from the South-South geopolitical zone of the country have vowed to mobilise Nigerians for President Goodluck Jonathan.
The groups said there was nothing wrong if the President decided to go for a second term in office.
According to them, the constitution was in support of any Nigerian running for a second term in office.
The groups, South-South Northern Alliance and South-South Youth Movement for Non-Violence, spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH in separate telephone interviews on Friday.
They insisted that nothing would make them allow anyone from the North to intimidate Jonathan out of the 2015 presidential race.
The group’s national coordinator, Mr. Garry Stanley, said at the right time, his group would begin to sensitise the people on the need to give Jonathan a second chance.
Stanley explained that it would be unfair for some people in the North to ask a President from the Niger Delta to run for only one term, when the constitution did not stipulate otherwise.
He stated that the Jonathan administration had improved power supply across the country, even as he expressed optimism that the President would surprise Nigerians in 2013.
“Constitutionally, Jonathan is allowed to run and he has some unfinished business to complete. If you look at the power sector, it has improved and he is handling the security situation.
“The problem in Nigeria is like a wound and he (Jonathan) will heal it. President Jonathan is from the Niger Delta and we will soon begin to mobilise Nigerians for him,†he said.
The National President for the South-South Youth Movement for Non-Violence, Mr. Ndubuisi Emmanwori, also said though the position of the few in the North was normal in a democracy, it would not stop Jonathan from contesting the 2015 presidential election.
Emmanwori described most of the criticisms against the President as “non-constructive.â€Â
According to him, some of the attacks on the current administration were laced with religious and ethnic bias.
He also urged the Boko Haram sect to put an end to the destruction of lives and properties and allow the President deliver on his election promises.
Emmanwori, however, pleaded with Jonathan not to disappoint Nigerians in 2013.
He said the year was likely to decide the fate of the President in 2015.
