An Igbo group, Igboezue Socio-Cultural Association, has dragged President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before a Federal High Court in Abuja, asking it for an order to compel the party to endorse the president for a second term in office. The group is also seeking a declaration that the party's failure to endorse the president for a second term in office and Jonathan's reluctance to declare his interest for a second term in office are unacceptable to well meaning Nigerians.
They also asked for an order directing the party to endorse Jonathan for a second term in office based on his good performance in office.
In the suit filed by its counsel, Thomas Ajia, the group said it was in the national interest for the president to be encouraged and persuaded to continue rendering good leadership to the people of Nigeria.
The plaintiff further said it had written to the 1st and 2nd defendants (President Jonathan and the PDP) demanding an immediate action on the second term project adding that the said letter dated July 2, 2013, was attached and would be relied on during trial.
The plaintiff also stated that it was forced to approach the court because the defendants refused to act after receiving its letters.
In an affidavit deposed to by the President General of the Igboezue Socio-Cultural Association, Mr. Elochukwu Onyekwere, he averred that "after several meetings with members of the association and consultation with other stakeholders from the South-east zone, it was unanimously agreed that we file this matter to drive home our point.
"That our association strongly believes that it is in the national interest that the president be encouraged and persuaded to continue rendering good governance to the good people of Nigeria. That we considered it an onerous task on our part to use the apparatus of the law available to us to conscientise and compel the president to continue to render his much needed leadership to the good people of Nigeria."
The matter has been fixed for hearing on Tuesday June 2 before Justice Abdul Kafarati of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
