The Police Command in Kano State on Thursday banned political campaigns in Garko and Gaya LGAs ahead of state House of Assembly by-elections in their constituencies.

Two members of the House of Assembly representing Garko and Gaya State Constituencies were recently killed by gunmen.

The deceased lawmakers are Abba Ibrahim Garko and Danladi Isa kademi respectively.

Following this development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fixed Feb. 2 for the by-elections in the constituencies.

A statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO) of the command, Mr Magaji Majiya, said the ban became imperative following recent clash between supporters of the opposing parties.

The command said a Toyota Hilux van, 15 motorcycles, chairs and tables were set ablaze during the clash.

It said the command had arrested four suspects in Gaya Local Government and 21 in Garko for inciting disturbances.

It further said that those arrested would be charged to court for political violence, possession of dangerous weapons and Indian hemp.

“The Command and the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security has held a meeting with political party leaders and other stakeholders warning them to control their followers to shun violence and ensure a harmonious coexistence.”

The command, however, assured that measures had been put in place to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections.

It said that further directives and guidance on the conduct of the elections would be issued later by the commissioner of police.
