Kenya to offer scholarships to support EAC integration

Kenya will, as part of its support for regional integration and development, organize and sponsor more tailor-made courses for Rwandan diplomats at different levels through Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Service Institute, President Kibaki said when he held talks with President Kagame.

President Kibaki announced that the Ministry of State for Defence has also offered to provide one scholarship to Rwanda worth U.S dollars 14000 every year of study at the National Defence College.

In agriculture, Kenya will provide three-week tailor-made courses to improve agricultural management skills for Agricultural Officers from Rwanda in batches of 20 at the Embu Agricultural Staff Training College at an estimated cost of Kshs 1.5 million.

Through the initiative, Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture plans to run the training annually for three years at a total cost of Kshs 4.5 million.

Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture will also provide one million tea seedling spread out in batches of 200,000 per year over a five year period to boost Rwanda’s tea industry.

The Ministry will donate macadamia seedlings and also encourage the private sector to set up a nut processing firm in Rwanda as part of value addition process in agro-industry.

During the bilateral talk between President Kibaki and his host President Kagame, it was agreed that Kenya’s Ministry of Forestry and wildlife will offer two slots for diploma courses in Wildlife management or Tourism at the Kenya Wildlife Training Institute on full scholarship beginning may next year.

Three full scholarships for Rwandese wildlife graduate officers at Manyani Field Training School and one two-week full scholarship for veterinary officer at Kenya wildlife Headquarters will also be provided.

In education, it was agreed that the Ministry of Education will sponsor two Rwandese Students for postgraduate studies in Engineering, Science and Technology and Teachers education.

Kenya will also provide three scholarships for undergraduate studies at the university among other support in the education sector.

In health, Kenya will provide specialized courses for nurses and clinical officers at the Kenya Medical training College manufacture of pharmaceutical products and medical research.

In justice, tailor-made training programmes in legal drafting and domestication of international instruments will be made available to Rwandan legal personnel.

On livestock, Kenya will provide capacity building at Animal Health and Industrial Training Institute for Rwandese staff.

Kenya will also provide support to Rwanda in other sectors including cooperative development, water and Irrigation, public service, tourism and transport sectors.
