Ethiopia coach Bishaw Sewnet has set a bold target to win next month’s Africa Cup of Nations, 51 years after their last triumph.

Sewnet told Aljazeera that Ethiopia’s s qualification to the Africa Cup after a 31-year absence was no fluke.

“We won’t go to South Africa to be defeated,” Sewnet boasted.

“Our aim has always been to bask in glory and we will go to the tourney to do nothing but win the title.

“We have given the youth a chance to prove themselves in this regional outing CECAFA and whoever impresses me in the process will make the team.”

The 1962 champions last Africa Cup appearance was at the 1982 finals held in Libya where they failed to advance from the group stage.

Ethiopia are in the group phase of the 2014 World Cup qualifying tournament along with South Africa, Botswana and Central Africa Republic.

They qualified for the 2013 Nations Cup after they eliminated Benin and Sudan.

They lost the first leg qualifier in Sudan 5-3, but won the reverse fixture 2-0 at home to go through to South Africa on the away goal rule.

Ethiopia are in Group C at next year’s tournament that contains Burkina Faso, Nigeria and defending champions Zambia.

The Walia Antelopes face Zambia in their opening game on January 21 at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

Nigeria to report Newcastle, Millwall to FIFA

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 15 Second

Nigeria Football Federation has threatened to report two English clubs – Newcastle United and Millwall – to FIFA if they do not release their players for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has said that Shola Ameobi will not be going to the tournament just as Millwall boss, Kenny Jackett, also said he expects Danny Shittu to turn down Nigeria’s call-up.

NFF member Chris Green said Nigeria will apply the FIFA rules on the players. On Wednesday Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi admitted that a clause in Ameobi’s contract could block him from showing up in South Africa.

“These clubs are not only disrespecting Nigeria but FIFA and (African governing body) CAF as well,” Green told BBC Sport.

“The rules are clear on international games approved by FIFA so we consider these comments as not only ridiculous but totally disrespectful.”

Green has made it clear that the NFF will apply for the full weight of FIFA sanctions on clubs who do not release players.

“We know the rules. FIFA has made it clear that these clubs will not be able to use these players for the duration of the Nations Cup plus an additional five days,” he added.

“We will further push for additional sanctions – we understand these clubs employ our players but they are also international footballers.

“Rules are rules. Newcastle and Millwall must understand the basics (of) why they exist.”

Milan reject Robinho offer

0 0
Read Time:54 Second

AC Milan are understood to have turned down a bid from Flamengo for Robinho, with the Brazilian club now ending their interest.

Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani was in Rio earlier this week to negotiate a potential January exit from the San Siro for the 28-year-old, who looks set to end his time in Italy.

Flamengo were keen to take Robinho back to Brazil, but their offer of six million euros was not enough and Galliani returned to Milan without a deal being agreed.

The Brazilian club now say they have no intention of increasing their offer and it seems like the former Manchester City star’s future remain up in the air ahead of the new year transfer window.

A statement on Flamengo’s official website read, “Flamengo directors Wallim Vasconcellos and Flavio Godinho met on Monday afternoon with Mr. Adriano Galliani in an attempt to bring Robinho to the club.

“However, because of the amount requested by Milan, the club believes it is appropriate to abandon the deal and step aside.”

Clippers atop NBA, Lakers win 5th game

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 47 Second

No one’s rushing to anoint the Los Angeles Clippers, who at 22-6 own the NBA’s best record. They’re not exactly impressed with themselves, either – despite a franchise-record 14-game winning streak.

‘’It is still early in the season and we have a lot to prove to the rest of the league,’’ Matt Barnes said after he helped the Clippers’ reserves outscore their starters in a 112-100 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night.

No less an authority than Kobe Bryant is complimentary.

‘’They’re playing extremely well,’’ Bryant said after leading the Lakers to their fifth straight win, 100-94 over the New York Knicks in the first game of a Christmas doubleheader at Staples Center. ‘’They’re coming at you in waves and waves.’’

The Clippers have taken advantage of a soft stretch in their schedule to win a franchise-record 14 in a row, although they have earlier wins over some of the league’s elite teams such as the Lakers, defending champion Miami, Memphis, and San Antonio twice.

‘’This is fool’s gold,’’ cautioned Clippers point guard Chris Paul, who led the starters with 14 points against the Nuggets. ‘’You don’t play for the regular season. Obviously, you want to build something.’’

While the Clippers continue to soar, the Lakers are starting to show signs of life in what has been a confounding season.

‘’We’re .500,’’ a smiling Dwight Howard said after the Lakers improved to 14-14. ‘’We did it on Christmas, too. I knew this day would come.’’

Bryant scored 34 points in his NBA-record 15th Christmas Day game, and Metta World Peace added 20 points and seven rebounds while defending Carmelo Anthony, whose 34 points led the Knicks.

The Lakers moved to 9-9 under new coach Mike D’Antoni and upped their holiday record to 21-18, including 13-9 at home. They returned to .500 for the first time since they were 8-8 on Nov. 30.

‘’It’s so early in the season to have turned a corner,’’ Bryant said. ‘’We have everybody in the lineup and we’re starting to see how we want to play.’’

The Clippers have clearly figured things out.

Jamal Crawford led their reserves with 22 points and Barnes added 20 – one off his season high – as the bench outscored the starters 64-48 in moving one win ahead of second-best Oklahoma City (21-6), which lost to Miami earlier Tuesday.

‘’They’ve got the respect of the league and they’ve got the attention of the league,’’ said former Clipper Andre Miller, who had 12 points for Denver. ‘’It’s tough to come in here and get a win when the team is playing that well.’’

Wenger to buy ‘exceptional player’ in January

0 0
Read Time:50 Second

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted he will only spend in the January transfer window for an “exceptional player” to boost his squad.

Wenger has money to spend and was expected to bring in a few new faces after a poor run of form last month.

However, the Gunners have won their last three Premier League games to put themselves back in the top four and Wenger has hinted he will not spend big in the New Year unless a top talent becomes available.

“We are in the market, but only if we find players who will really strengthen us because we have a good squad. But if we find an exceptional player then we will take him,” Wenger told the Daily Mirror.

“We lacked fluidity in our attacks against Wigan and continuity in our attacking play but we won because of our will to win. And, with the way things are now, I won’t turn my nose up at that.”
