Didier Drogba will lead a vastly experienced Ivory Coast squad in the African Nations Cup finals starting next month which includes a recall for Wigan Athletic striker Arouna Kone.

Drogba, Emmanuel Eboue, Didier Zokora, Boubacar Barry, Arthur Boka, Siaka Tiene and the Toure brothers, Kolo and Yaya, head to a fifth successive tournament.

The widely travelled Kone, who competed at the Nations Cup finals in 2006 and 2008, is back along with Spanish-based midfielder Romaric, who has also missed out in recent years.

Coach Sabri Lamouchi named a squad on Thursday with just six changes from the last edition, where the Ivorians did not concede a single goal but finished runners-up.

Third choice goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare is the only uncapped player in the squad.

The Ivorians are only the second of the 16 finalists to announce their final 23-man squad for the tournament in South Africa, which starts on Jan. 19. All squads must be finalised 10 days before the opening match.

They are to hold a 10-day training camp in Abu Dhabi from Jan. 6-16 and play a friendly against Egypt there on Jan. 14 before heading to South Africa, where they are top seeds in Group D alongside Algeria, Togo and Tunisia.

Rooney faces three weeks out

Read Time:48 Second

Wayne Rooney will miss the rest of Manchester United’s festive programme after injuring knee ligaments in training.

The striker has been ruled out for between two and three weeks with the problem, which kept him out of a thrilling Boxing Day victory over Newcastle.

Rooney’s replacement Javier Hernandez scored an injury-time winner in a 4-3 success which put United seven points clear at the top of the Premier League.

And after the game Sir Alex Ferguson told MUTV the reason for Rooney’s omission from the 18-man squad.

He said, “It was a volley towards the end of training. He did a ligament at the back of his knee and could be out for two to three weeks.”

Ferguson’s worst-case scenario would see the England international miss Premier League games against West Brom, Wigan and Liverpool and the FA Cup third round tie at West Ham.

Nations Cup: Newcastle contract rules Ameobi out

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 0 Second

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew finally won the debate over Shola Ameobi’s availability for the 2013 Africa Nations Cup as the Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi on Wednesday admitted that a clause in the player’s contract with his club stops him from playing in the competition.

Keshi who spoke in Abuja said that he discussed with the striker on Christmas day and was told by Ameobi that two years ago he signed his contract with a clause that says he cannot go to the Africa Nations Cup without the manager’s permission.

He said, “And to make matters worse Newcastle fear that Senegalese Demba Ba will be leaving the club by the January transfer window and they need a strong strike force and with Ameobi being their most experienced player in that area. We may lose him. But he has said he will talk to me late on Boxing Day and after that I will let Nigerians know what the position is. He wants to discuss the issue with his manager, (Pardew).”

Pardew who was so sure of his facts had said on Monday that Ameobi will not be going with the Eagles to South Africa. He based his conviction on something he claimed the national coach knew about.

He said, “Shola won’t be going. The national team manager knows the reasons, which I am keeping to myself.”

Eagles will depart for Faro, Portugal on Thursday through Accra, Ghana, to begin the final phase of its camping for the Nations Cup. But Ameobi may not be the only player who may not be going to South Africa.

Warri Wolves new acquisition, Chibuzor Okonkwo, has also missed out as he does not have a valid visa for the trip and which may take nearly two weeks to secure.

“By that time we will already be rounding off our training, that is why we may have to leave him behind,” Keshi said.

But it was good tidings for Kano Pillars’ Papa Idris and Enyimba’s Henry Uche who have been offered opportunity to hustle for shirts in the Faro camp and would be travelling with the team. The players who were not in the first list but proved themselves excellent in training despite the fact that the list of home based players for the camp had already been released.

Sterling sticks with England

0 0
Read Time:46 Second

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has pledged his international future to England, ruling out switching his allegiance to Jamaica.

The 18-year-old, who holds dual nationality after being born in Kingston to Jamaican parents, has represented England at every level from under-16 onwards and won his first senior cap for Roy Hodgson’s side in last month’s 4-2 defeat in Sweden.

He remains eligible to play for the country of his birth as the Stockholm fixture was only a friendly, but has no plans to abandon England.

Quoted in several newspapers, he said, “It was a dream come true (to play against Sweden). As a 15-year-old I can remember sitting at home and praying to get an under-16 call-up, so to be getting a senior call-up a few years later was one of the best things that ever happened to me.”

Nations Cup: Dein backs Eagles for glory

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 34 Second

Former Arsenal vice-chairman, David Dein, is expecting Nigeria’s Super Eagles to do well at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Dein is hopeful that the Eagles will emulate their beach soccer counterparts, the Supersand Eagles, who successfully defended their Copa Lagos Beach Soccer Worldwide title this month.

“Football is a big sport in Nigeria. The Nigerian team has done well in beach soccer, a growing sport. It’s amazing that the Beach Soccer Worldwide organises at least two tournaments monthly across the world and Copa Lagos is one of them,” said the President of the G-14 Group of European Football Clubs.

“As for the Nigerian men’s national team, I hope they do well at the Nations Cup in South Africa like their beach soccer team did at Copa Lagos. This is a country where big football talents like (Nwankwo) Kanu emerged from.”

The former Vice Chairman of the Football Association added that Nigeria had a huge resource base of talented footballers to always draw from but needed “the right coaches, proper structure and plan” to develop.

Dein believes that Africa and South America will produce huge numbers of football talents in 10 years time.

“There are always lots of football talents coming out of Nigeria. In 10 years, there will be a heavy flow of talent from Africa and also South America. Nigeria is a fertile ground for football but the country will need to have the right coaches and proper structure and plan to help groom the talent,” said Dein, who was in Nigeria to witness the second edition of Copa Lagos this month.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are in Group C of the Nations Cup with defending champions, Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.

The 2013 competition will hold in South Africa between January 19 and February 10.
