Mourinho will stay – Ronaldo

The Portuguese boss has seen his future at the club shrouded in doubt of late, with a string of controversial decisions and a 16-point gap to Liga leaders Barcelona leaving his position weakened with los Blancos.

However, Ronaldo feels his compatriot is not about to quit Santiago Bernabeu, and insists he is the right man to lead the club forward.

When asked whether he thought Jose Mourinho would leave, he told reporters at a press conference: “I do not know. It depends on his situation and the club. I would love him to stay because he is the right coach. He is a top coach for a top club. I think he is going to stay but everyone chooses their future.”

Mourinho came under fire recently following his decision to drop club captain Iker Casillas for the defeat to Malaga, but Ronaldo the coach’s decision is final.

“For me, in football, nothing surprises me,” he continued. “His (Casillas’) replacement was a technical decision that we must respect. Here the coach is the boss and he makes decisions for the benefit of the group.”

Ronaldo’s own future has been the subject of speculation lately, with the player seemingly embroiled in a dispute over the extension of his contract, but the 27-year-old insists he is happy at the club and focused on winning trophies.

Inter captain Javier Zanetti has insisted that Wesley Sneijder could still have a future at San Siro.

The Netherlands international recently claimed that it would be best for all parties concerned if he left the club in January as his contractual dispute with the Nerazzurri continues to rumble on, with Tottenham and Liverpool rumored to be interested should he depart Milan.

However, coach Andrea Stramaccioni has since stated he would be open to bringing the playmaker back into the first team.

Brazil duo wanted at Spurs

Read Time:41 Second

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas is still interested in Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Willian and Internacional forward Leandro Damiao.

The pair, who both featured for Brazil at international level, were linked with Spurs during the summer and Portuguese boss Villas-Boas has reinstated his admiration for the duo.

Speaking about Willian he told Lancenet: “We contacted Willian and he is one of the players in which we had an interest. I like his style but we could not reach a deal with Shakhtar in the summer.

“Shakhtar are a tough club to negotiate with; they don’t need the money, they can keep their players.”

Villas-Boas also had high praise for Damiao, who was one of the key players in the Brazilian team that won a Silver medal at the 2012 Olympics.

Nigeria:Rabiu Ibrahim joins Kilmarnock on two-year deal

Read Time:1 Minute, 21 Second

Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock have completed the signing of Super Eagles midfielder Rabiu Ibrahim from league leaders, Celtic, on a permanent basis.

The 21-year-old has agreed a two-year contract with the Rugby Park club, which are currently sixth in the SPL log, after Celtic allowed the player to move on in search of regular first-team football.

Ibrahim had an offer from Russia and was also believed to be a loan target for other Scottish sides.

“He’s signed a two year deal with us,” Kilmarnock manager Kenny Shiels told STV.

“I believe it’s quite a coup for Kilmarnock and we are a good fit for him.

“Rabiu had an offer from a club in Russia but he and his advisors thought it would be better for his career development to stay in Scotland and they were equally as keen as we were for the deal to go through.

“We signed him on a free transfer.”

The former Golden Eaglets star will not join up with his new teammates immediately as he is currently with the Nigeria national team preparing for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

“He’s away with the Nigeria squad for the AFCON at the moment,” Shiels said.

“I believe January 9 is the deadline for them to name their final squad. I would quite like him to be named in the squad for his confidence.

“If he is named then as soon as they go out of the competition, he will join up with us.”

Djokovic loses to Tomic in Hopman Cup

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 58 Second

Bernard Tomic upset top-ranked Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4 but Australia lost to Serbia 2-1 at the Hopman Cup on Wednesday.

Ana Ivanovic evened the round-robin event by overwhelming Australian 16-year-old Ashleigh Barty 6-2, 6-3. Barty made a positive start, but once Ivanovic made the first break to lead 4-2 she took control. The Serbians combined to win the mixed doubles 6-4, 6-7 (8), 10-6.

Tomic put Djokovic under pressure right from the start, holding five break points in the opening game. Djokovic survived that threat and held a break point of his own to lead 5-3 but netted a backhand. Tomic broke serve in the next game with a crosscourt forehand winner and served out the set.

He kept up the pressure in the second set, failing to convert a break point to lead 4-3. But he won his sixth break point at 5-4 and he served out his first win over Djokovic in four tries.

‘’I played a very, very good match,’’ Tomic said. ‘’I’m just happy after the training the last few months, that it’s all coming good and the training’s paying off.’’

Playing before more than 13,000 in the sold-out Perth Arena, Tomic admitted to feeling nervous at the start.

“Very difficult to play the first few games,’’ he said. ‘’It’s very hard playing against a player like Novak and come out relaxed. But I’m happy the way I came out. I was serving really good and the whole match was on my side because my serve was working really well.’’

Djokovic was generous in defeat and conceded that Tomic deserved his victory.

“He played really well. He deserved to win,’’ Djokovic said. ‘’I knew I was coming here to Australia really late and it still takes time for me to get used to it. But I’m not taking anything from his win. He played terrific. He’s in great form. I was always on the back foot and he was the better player.’’

Demba Ba completes Chelsea move

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 30 Second

Senagalese international Demba Ba has completed his move to Chelsea from Newcastle.

The Blues agreed a fee with Newcastle for Ba after making an official bid on Wednesday.

Ba has a release clause, understood to be £7.5m, which was triggered by the European champions.

A statement on Newcastle’s website on Wednesday read: “Newcastle United can confirm that Chelsea Football Club has made an official offer for Demba Ba which has triggered the release clause in the player’s contract. The club has given the player permission to speak to Chelsea and therefore he will not be included in the squad for tonight’s (Wednesday’s) game against Everton.”

As at 9pm on Wednesday, the London club had finalised the discussion on personal terms with the player.

Preliminary discussions between representatives of the player and Chelsea had earlier broken up with the deal on the table nowhere near the Senegal international’s expectations. Ba’s representatives indicated that the striker did not expect to end up in west London come the end of the January transfer window following the failed talks.

Manager Rafael Benitez said on Wednesday, “You can always improve things, especially when you have injuries, and we lose two players to the Africa Cup of Nations. Obviously we need bodies but I am really pleased with the squad.”

While the initial fee of £7.5m for a player with Ba’s track record, including 13 league goals this season, appears a bargain, the true cost of the deal could be much more. The Independent revealed that the total could be closer to £30m once agent fees of £5m and a four-year deal worth £80,000 a week are factored in.

Keshi Forecloses Martins Recall for AFCON 2013

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 35 Second

Super Eagles Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, has foreclosed the recall of Spain-based striker, Obafemi Martins, from the team preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations starting in barely a fortnight in South Africa.

Media Officer of the team, Ben Alaiya confirmed Monday that the Eagles’ supremo has no intention of recalling Martins as a possible replacement for Shola Ameobi who Newcastle manager, Alan Pardew is tenaciously holding on to from joining the glory seeking squad in Faro, Portugal.

“The head coach (Stephen Keshi) has made it clear that he will not call up any new player as he has enough players to choose from for the Nations Cup,” disclosed Eagles spokesman.

The Levante striker was one of the top stars left out by Nigeria for a training camp in Portugal ahead of the forthcoming AFCON in South Africa.

England-based defender Danny Shittu has opted out of the squad and there are still doubts over the availability of Ameobi.

“There is no word from Ameobi yet on whether he will be part of our Nations Cup preparations. Keshi said he cannot force the player to play for the country and so he is still waiting to hear from Ameobi on his position and then we will take it from there,” said Alaiya.

There are now a total of 20 players in Faro – nine overseas-based pros and 11 from the Nigeria Premier League.  Turkey-based striker Uche Kalu was the last arrival.

US-based striker Bright Dike has been terrific in training as battle for places at the AFCON have stepped up a gear, according to officials.

The Eagles will fly out to Spain today for a friendly against Catalonia the following day with either Chigozie Agbim or Daniel Akpeyi started in goal as none of the team’s foreign-based goalkeepers are in Portugal.

2012 in Review: Nigeria’s Year of Glory at Chess Olympiad

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 38 Second

It was a massive celebration in Team Nigeria’s camp in Istanbul, Turkey, the moment Nigeria was officially pronounced by the world chess body, FIDE, as the winners of the Category E of the last World Chess Olympiad.

The victory at Istanbul capped Nigeria’s glorious outings at the global level in 2012.

Still smarting from the two gold and one silver medals the team won at the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique, the Nigerian Chess Federation (NCF) in May hosted the Zone 4.2 International Chess event in Abuja which was won by International Master Bunmi Olape.

It was at the same event that the duo of Bomo Kighiga and Seun Bisiriyu bagged the same International Masters titles that are still subject to FIDE confirmation.

Two months later, the Nigerian male team led by International Master Dapo Adu, who joined the team from USA, left nobody in doubt from the opening round of the Chess Olympiad in Turkey that they were in that country for business.

The feat was the best performance ever of the country at the biennial intellectual game since 1998 when International Master Odion Aikhoje won a gold medal on board two.

Significantly, this is the first time Nigeria will come out tops at any team event in chess and when team captain Lekan Adeyemi led the team to the podium at the closing ceremony, it was a loud ovation that greeted these worthy champions from Nigeria who came into the tournament as underdogs and ended up as kingpin!

The NCF President, Sani Mohammed, a deputy commissioner of police, commended the players for a battle well fought in 11 days of the ‘mind war’.

“Many pundits did not give this team a chance because most of the payers were attending the competition for the first time but I had faith in them and the technical crew, the result here has shown that we have abundant talents in the country,” Mohammed remarked in his assessment of Nigerian chess Monday.

However, while the male team were able to sustain their lead in the category till the end of the competition, the story was not the same for the female team that slipped into the second position after a disappointing 1.5-2.5 lost to South Africa. Chinese Taipei emerged tops with 10 points as against the nine points Nigeria and Thailand tied at. The Nigerian representatives upstaged Thailand on a tie break.

It is noteworthy that two Nigerian female players, Oluwatobi Olatunji and Nsisong Bassey, bagged the Women FIDE Masters titles for their performances during the 11-round Swiss event pairing.

The tournament also had one of the country’s Chess Olympiad debutants, Adeyinka Adesina, hugging global limelight in chess following his brilliant win against highly rated Grand Master, Pontus Carlson of Sweden, in the round eight male category.

Although Nigeria’s male team lost 1-3 to Sweden, Adesina was the star among hundreds of chess players on parade after the upset against an experienced opponent and put him at pole post of getting a FIDE title at the end of the 11-round Swiss event.

Adesina, playing in the white side of Nimzo Indian Defence deviated from his opponent’s prepared repertoire and forced him into finding solution to impending isolated pawn structure.

The Grand Master ran into time trouble and thus paved the way for Adesina to gain an upper hand in the middle play and in the end game, the Nigerian had a better pawn structure and an active Queen as against Carlson’s rook and a knight.

When Adesina acquired another Queen, just like the biblical story of David and Goliath, the respected Grand Master resigned to the admiration of chess pundits at the arena.

“This is a memorable day for me because chess pundits here (Olympiad) did not give us any chance at this event knowing full well that Nigeria paraded unrated players, but we were able to overcome with our raw talents.

“I dedicate this win to thousands of chess players at home and knowing full well that if the leadership of the game in the country can implement the ‘chess in school’ programme as promised, a lot of talents that will take Nigeria to greater height will be discovered,” Adesina reacted after his heroics in Istanbul last September.

Siasia keen on Kenyan coaching position.

Read Time:51 Second

Former Nigeria national team coach Samson Siasia has thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant Kenyan coaching position.

Former France, Cameroon, Morocco, Tunisia and Ivory Coast boss Henri Michel stepped down from the post after just three months in charge over issues surrounding his contract.

Henri’s assistant, James Nandwa, was named as his temporary replacement until a suitable candidate could be found.

And Siasia, who has a significant amount of experience at international level, is hopeful of an invitation to apply for the vancancy.

Siasia has previously been assistant to the Super Eagles before being appointed coach of the Nigeria U-20 team in 2004.

But he was sacked from his position after failing to guide Nigeria to AFCON 2012, having been appointed in 2010.

He told SuperSport: “Managing the Kenyan national team would be an exciting opportunity for me.

“They have such enormous talent, with players in the local leagues and in Europe. It would not take so long before they become a formidable force in football.”

“Balotelli is my boy and I am dating his sister” – Obafemi Martins

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 28 Second

For a while now, the rumour mills have continued churning out stories, insisting that there were strings attached between Obafemi Martins and Mario Balotelli’s elder sister, Abigail.

The pair had been spotted together in at different locations, with love clearly in their eyes and the Levante frontman has finally confirmed that they are having an affair.

He also insisted that the erratic Manchester City forward, had no qualms about him seeing his sister, as they have a good relationship dating from their time together at Inter Milan.

“Mario is my boy. The respect is there because I used to play at Inter, in the youth team with him. He’s giving me my respect and I’m doing same. People are putting it in the news that he’s upset, of course he’s glad,” he said.

“He’s glad that Obafemi Martins is dating his sister. But if he gets jealous then it means he doesn’t want his sister to grow. But it’s not like that. The boy is not a bad boy.

Martins, who was recently dropped from the Nigerian squad to the Nations Cup, however insisted that marriage is not on the agenda yet.

He said: “The relationship is true but getting married or not, we haven’t discussed anything like that. She’s upstairs and we’re happy together.”

24-year-old Abigail, had earler told the The Sun in an interview in April that she couldn’t date a footballer.

“Mario wouldn’t let me anyway. He knows only too well what they are like. They are surrounded by women. Girls throw themselves at them,” she said.
