“We hope and believe that all employees will agree to this as it is the key to securing the short and long-term capital and liquidity and the continuation of the club,” chief executive Tommy Hakansson said in a statement.

An initial 10 per cent wage cut is to be implemented immediately with a further 15 percent coming in three months.

Brondby, who boast Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup and ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel among their former players, are bottom of Denmark’s top-flight with 17 points from 20 matches.

Nigeria: Federation election, NSC drops government nominees

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 36 Second

As the fresh election guidelines and timetable are being drawn up for the national sports federations, The PUNCH can confirm that the National Sports Commission will no longer pick any candidate designated as government nominee. In the past elections, the Ministry of Sports usually listed at least a candidate for each federation who would later be  elected president of the federation while the other candidates were elected from the zones and other approved affiliates.

But on Tuesday, the Minister of Sports, Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi, told out correspondent in an exclusive interview that the government was taking a different stand with the 2013 elections.

He said, “There would be no government nominees. Ours is to set out clearly the eligibility guidelines and ensure they are strictly followed. The principle here is to grant greater autonomy while enhancing efficiency, internal democracy and accountability.”

The NSC on Monday announced that the secretaries of the federations/associations are to be withdrawn and redeployed to the Commission to pave the  way for the employment of new secretaries from outside the government setting by the federation in what is explained as a bid to give them greater autonomy.

The minister, who was on his way to Portugal to visit the Super Eagles in camp preparatory to the 2013 Africa Nations Cup, said that there were other fresh ideas being injected to make the federations more professionally run.

“Talking about innovation, which is also pursuant to these principles, is the new funding system, which includes a Conditional Grant Transfer. This will work through a dedicated pot of fund that will be accessed only by federations that are able to meet predefined conditionality,” he said.

No date has been fixed for the general elections but the tenure of the current boards of the federations will expire this year. They were elected into offices in 2009 for four-year terms.

Kuznetsova overcomes Wozniacki, Sydney heat

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 39 Second

Former world number two Svetlana Kuznetsova defied sweltering heat that earlier prompted Agnieszka Radwanska to suggest it was too hot to play to beat seventh seed Caroline Wozniacki on Tuesday in the second round of the Sydney International.

Russia’s Kuznetsova, a two-times grand slam champion who was knocked out in the first round in Auckland last week and had to qualify for the main draw in Sydney, beat the former world number one 7-6 1-6 6-2 in a match that lasted almost four hours.

Sydney had been forecast to hit a maximum of 43C on Tuesday as Australia swelters in a heatwave that has sparked raging bush fires.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology reported a temperature high of 41.4 C at 1530(local) at Sydney’s Olympic Park and women’s top seed Radwanska had said earlier that play should have been abandoned until the temperature dropped.

The world number four, who was given a bye into the second round, played the opening match on centre court and beat Japan’s Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-4 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals but even that early in the day the heat was effecting the players.

“I think this is too hot to play tennis,” Radwanska told reporters. “Even for players, for ball kids, for the people sitting out there, I think it’s just too hot.”

“Today was one of the hottest day I (have) played for sure.”

Former French Open champion Li Na, who followed Radwanska on to court, compared the heat to playing in a sauna, but she was good enough to speed through Japan’s Ayumi Morita 6-1 6-0 in 52 minutes.

“I was feeling, I don’t know, just feeling like unbelievable. They say it was 40, but even on the tennis court even more,” Li said.

Racism: You’re wrong, Berlusconi tells Blatter

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 15 Second

AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has hit back at FIFA president Sepp Blatter after the world football boss said players who were racially abused during matches should not leave the pitch.

Milan’s players walked off during a friendly after Kevin-Prince Boateng was subjected to racist abuse by fans of fellow Italian side Pro Patria.

Berlusconi told radio station RTL, “I am of the opposite view (to Blatter).

“I thanked and congratulated my players for their decision to leave the field.”

AC Milan’s players carried anti-racism messages on their shirts prior to Sunday’s league win against Siena.

And former Italy president Berlusconi continued, “This is an uncivilised problem that needs to be stopped, people should not allow these things to happen.

“It’s not only about the behaviour of players in the game, but of the public, and everyone needs to avoid giving Italy a negative image.”

Former Tottenham and Portsmouth player Boateng picked up the match-ball midway through the first half of Thursday’s friendly and kicked it towards the crowd after reacting to abuse from a section of the fans.

The Ghana international midfielder then removed his shirt and left the pitch with both sets of players and officials.

Boateng has said he would leave the pitch again if subjected to racist taunts in the future.

I try helping Balotelli — Tevez

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 16 Second

Carlos Tevez has claimed that he has made several personal efforts to help his troubled Manchester City strike partner Mario Balotelli.

The Italian has been a figure of controversy both on and off the pitch since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium in 2010, epitomized by the physical confrontation this week between himself and manager Roberto Mancini in a training session.

However, according to Tevez, who himself fell out with the manager last season in a dispute that saw him sit out six months of competition, the incidents involving Balotelli are no different to those involving players at other teams.

“These kinds of incidents have happened at all the clubs I’ve been,” the former Manchester United man told reporters.

“But here at City the spotlight is always on us, always on Roberto and Mario. So it always comes out, but this kind of thing happens everywhere. Mario has been doing okay. He has been working and trying to improve.

“That’s what he did coming back from illness and injury, and it’s what he’s been trying to do.

“I try to help Mario. I talk to him on and off the pitch. I talked to him just before a free kick we were about to take, and I let him take it so he could improve his confidence, so things can get better for him.”

Messi wins fourth Ballon d’Or award

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 53 Second

Lionel Messi has netted the prestigious Ballon d’Or for an unprecedented fourth time.

Barcelona ace Messi, 25, pipped Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and team-mate Andres Iniesta at the glittering awards ceremony in Zurich.

And the Argentina megastar said, “To tell you the truth this is really quite unbelievable. The fourth award that I have had is just too great for words.

“I would like to recognise my other colleagues from Barcelona. Andres it has been great to train and play alongside you.

“I would also like to recognise all of my friends in the Argentinian national team, everyone that has worked with me, coaches and staff and my family and my friends. Also my wife and my son. Thank you.”

The European Ballon d’Or, last won by the Argentine in 2009, merged with FIFA’s World Player of the Year award in 2010 to become the FIFA Ballon d’Or.

And Messi, who broke Gerd Muller’s 40-year-old record last month by scoring 91 goals in a calendar year, had backed Iniesta to scoop the prize.

At long last, US’s Abby Wambach can be called the top women’s soccer player in the world after she captured the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award.

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque won the 2012 FIFA Coach of the Year award after leading his country to its third consecutive major trophy at Euro 2012.

La Liga swept the 2012 FIFPro World XI, with Barcelona and Real Madrid stars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo leading the way. There is no single English Premier League player in the list.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas earned the nod at goalkeeper, while his teammates Sergio Ramos and Marcelo made it into the defence alongside Barcelona duo Dani Alves and Gerard Pique.

The three-man midfield consisted of Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso, partnered by his Spain teammates and Barcelona foes Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

Unsurprisingly, both Ronaldo and Messi made the cut up front, with Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao completing the FIFPro World XI.

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 2 Second

The Executive Director, Ondo State Football Agency, Mike Idoko, says Sunshine Stars of Akure will perform well in the 2012/2013 Nigerian Premier League in spite of losing some of their top players.

Idoko told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Akure that the team had prepared well for the challenge of excelling during the new season.

He said the team was already a force to reckon with in the continent and the NPL for the past three seasons and would continue to give its best.

“We are fully prepared for this coming season though we lost some of our key players to both foreign and local teams.

“We have promoted quality players from Rising Stars and our football academy to replace those who left for foreign countries and other clubs.

“I believe that the team we will parade this season will be a force to reckon with in the NPL and should be able to pick up a continental ticket,” he said.

According to Idoko, six players were called up from Rising Stars which was equally under ODSFA while three players were promoted from the state football academy to the team.
