Oyinlomo Quadri emerged the winner of the 6th Yoruba Tennis club Secondary School Championship at the Yoruba tennis Club court at Monika, Lagos.
Quadri who won the 5th edition last year and was runner-up at the 4th edition defeated Mary-Love Edwards in two straight sets 6-2, 6-1. She praised her opponent saying that she has improved compared to the last edition where she was easily defeated.
â€œI am so happy to win this tournament again, but I must confess that Mary-Love has really improved. I did not believe that I could beat her in two straight,â€she said.
Ouadri who is currently defending champion of the U-14 West Africa tournament said the Yoruba Tennis Club secondary school championship was just right for her preparation ahead of the African Junior Tennis tournament scheduled for Nairobi, Kenya.
â€œI am ready to represent my country in May this year in Nairobi, Kenya for the African Junior Tennis Championship and this Yoruba Tennis Club Secondary Schools Tennis championship is part of preparation for me. I will give my best and no stone will be left unturned,â€he pledged.
In the boys category described as battle of the Michaels, Micheal Ayoola of Ebute Elefun Senior High School, Lagos Island beat Michael Osewa of Branded College, Ebute metta, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
The final which was a cynosure of the spectators saw Ayoola coming from 5-2 down to beat Osewa 7-5 in the first set while Osewa also came from 5-0 to defeat Ayoola 5-7 in the second set while the final set went in favour of Ayoola 6-3 to crown him champion of the boys category.
After the encounter, Osewa expressed disappointment but added that mistakes are bound to happen but that he has learnt from it.
For emerging the winners of the tourney, both Quadri and Ayoola who played in borrowed canvass, went home with N100,000 each with with tennis equipment while the runners-up of both categories got N75,000 each. The semi finalists of both categories got N50,000 each with tennis equipment.
