How Chelsea was beaten on Mourinho’s return to Porto

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 19 Second

Jose Mourinho endured a miserable return to face his old club FC Porto on Tuesday as Chelsea slumped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Portuguese side in a rousing Champions League encounter.

Andre Andre’s opener for Porto late in the first half was quickly cancelled out by a superb Willian free-kick, but Maicon’s 52nd-minute header proved to be the difference in this Group G clash played at a rip-roaring pace.

Porto were worthy winners, and Mourinho has now failed to win in three trips back to the Estadio do Dragao as Chelsea manager, following another 2-1 loss in 2004 and a 1-1 draw in 2007.

More importantly, Chelsea slip to third in Group G, a point behind Porto and Dynamo Kiev, who beat Maccabi Tel-Aviv 2-0 in Israel in the night’s other game.

It was always going to be an emotional occasion for Mourinho as he went back to face the club he coached so successfully over a decade ago and led to Champions League glory in 2004.

However, the reality for Mourinho was that he needed a positive result from his side to divert attention away from their stalling Premier League form, and he acted decisively when it came to his team selection.

Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic might have been considered undroppable in the past but they were both on the bench at kick-off in Portugal, while Oscar, Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao — the former Porto striker — were missing from the squad entirely.

Instead, John Obi Mikel, Ramires and Willian all started, as did Diego Costa, who is currently suspended in domestic competition.

Iker Casillas, who became a sworn enemy of Mourinho as the two fell out when working together at Real Madrid, started in goal for the hosts and made a record 152nd Champions League appearance.

And the Spaniard thwarted Mourinho and Chelsea twice in the opening exchanges, first turning behind a powerful shot from his international colleague Cesc Fabregas after good work by Costa. Then, Casillas rushed out to save from another compatriot, Pedro Rodriguez, who had been played in by Willian.

Meanwhile, Porto’s formidable attack, featuring the brawn of Vincent Aboubakar and the mesmerising skill of Yacine Brahimi, were only showing flashes of their potential.

But when the Algerian winger Brahimi finally took on Chelsea right-back Branislav Ivanovic, who has endured a troubled start to the season, it brought instant reward in the 39th minute.

He jinked into the box and tried a shot which Asmir Begovic saved. Begovic could not, however, keep out the follow-up from Andre Andre.

The Dragao roared, but it was silenced right on the stroke of half-time. Ramires won a free-kick just outside the box and Willian stepped up to curl a beauty past a motionless Casillas for his third goal in as many games.

Porto were stunned, but Chelsea were unable to build on that moment of brilliance by the Brazilian as the home side regained the lead just seven minutes after the restart, their captain Maicon stooping to head a Ruben Neves corner low past Begovic at his near post.

Costa was desperately unlucky not to equalise virtually from the restart with a superb strike from wide on the left that looked to be arrowing into the far corner of the net but crashed back off the underside of the bar.

Nevertheless, the second goal galvanised a youthful and energetic Porto front six and they threatened to run riot as Giannelli Imbula stung the palms of Begovic and Aboubakar was denied by a crucial last-ditch block just six yards out.

Mourinho sent on Hazard and Matic, as well as Kenedy, but still Porto looked the stronger team. Indeed, they deserved to win by a greater margin, but Danilo’s header from a Miguel Layun corner agonisingly came back off the far post.

UEFA Champions League Final Report: Juventus 1 Barcelona 3

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 49 Second

Barcelona completed a trophy treble in Luis Enrique's debut season in charge as they beat Juventus 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League final in Berlin.

Luis Suarez produced his most crucial contribution of his short career at Camp Nou when he restored Barca's lead 22 minutes from time to effectively settle the game, after Alvaro Morata had cancelled out Ivan Rakitic's early opener.

A fifth European title looked set to be a more routine ask when Rakitic – the man to perform so capably in replacing the soon-to-depart Xavi this term – opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a trademark Barca goal, which saw nine of their 10 outfield players touch the ball.

However, while Barca enjoyed the better of the first half from there – threatening a Juve back line shorn of Giorgio Chiellini through injury – former Real Madrid man Morata struck early in the second period.

Having scored twice in the two-legged semi-final against his former club, Morata was afforded a simple finish after Marc-Andre ter Stegen had saved an initial effort from Carlos Tevez.

Suarez was the only Barca man not involved in Rakitic's opener, but the Uruguayan provided the key touch in his side's crucial second, as he replicated Morata's finish when Lionel Messi's effort was spilled by Gianluigi Buffon.

Neymar had a header disallowed, via an accidental handball, as Barca sought to put the game out of sight late on.

But it proved inconsequential in the end, as the Brazilian added a third with the last touch of the match to ensure that Luis Enrique's side repeated the treble-winning achievement of Pep Guardiola's Barca in his debut season of 2008-09.

The victory also provided Xavi with a successful send-off to his career with the Catalan giants before he joins Qatari club Al Saad.

European success continues to elude Juve, meanwhile, with the Serie A side coming up short in their attempt to win the continent's most prized trophy for the first time since 1996 and their own treble bid.

Barca could barely have hoped for a better start, as Rakitic opened the scoring in style in the fourth minute when he was the beneficiary of a spell of neat passing play that bore all the Spanish giants' familiar hallmarks.

Following Messi's raking pass out to Jordi Alba, Neymar slipped the ball in to Andres Iniesta. He in turn found the Croatian – Rakitic finishing past Buffon from inside the six-yard box to spark wild celebrations on the Barca bench.

The goal came somewhat out of the blue, with Juve having begun on the front foot. And, having fallen behind, the Italians then saw Arturo Vidal display an uncharacteristic lack of composure, as the Chilean blazed over before Neymar was wayward at the other end.

The Liga champions began to apply further pressure, and Buffon kept out Dani Alves' effort with a superb strong, left-handed save, before Vidal " perhaps flustered by his part in losing the run of Iniesta for the opener " was overzealous in his tackling and narrowly escaped a second early yellow card for crashing into Neymar.

Juve had half-hearted penalty appeals turned away following claims of a foul by Alba on Paul Pogba midway through the half but Barca were largely controlled in possession, apparently content to take the pace out of the game.

The threat of Messi, Neymar and Suarez continued to prove a real menace on the break and the latter twice went close to extending the lead with long-range strikes prior to half-time.

Buffon was handed a let-off when he inexplicably gave the ball away to Neymar deep in his own half but he displayed his vast experience to keep Suarez out again early in the second half after a rapid Barca breakaway.

Despite replicating their early momentum, Barca were hauled level when Morata pounced on Ter Stegen's save after 55 minutes to get Juve back into the game.

Claudio Marchisio's deft backheel helped Tevez into a shooting position and, when the Barca goalkeeper kept that effort at bay, Morata followed up to tap the ball into an empty net – prompting wild celebrations from the goalscorer that had unsurprisingly been absent against Real.

With Juve buoyed, Tevez and Pogba both went close, but their momentum was abruptly halted by Suarez's close-range finish – at a time when the Italian champions were enjoying their most threatening spell.

A trademark dribble from Messi was followed up by a strike that Buffon could not hold, allowing Suarez to tap home his most important Barca goal.

Neymar looked to have wrapped up victory with a header soon after, but the official on the byline spotted his header had deflected off a hand.

Barca legend Xavi was then introduced for his swansong at the expense of long-time midfield companion Iniesta.

It could also prove to be Andrea Pirlo's final Juve game, with the midfield maestro unable to conjure up any late moments of magic before Barca sealed victory when Neymar scored with the final touch of the match following a quick break.

It completed a season many in Catalunya would not have believed possible when Luis Enrique's took over from Gerardo Martino in May 2014, and then saw his position questioned following rocky results and a public disagreement with Messi at the turn of the year.

The Barca boss – consistently non-committal on his future in charge – must now decide whether to bow out at the top or attempt to replicate former team-mate Guardiola's legacy.

Swiss resigns as FIFA president

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 21 Second

Sepp Blatter has surprisingly announced his decision to resign as the president of the Federation of International Football Association.

Blatter announced his resignation just four days after winning the FIFA presidential election on Friday, May 29 at the Congress in  Switzerland.

His resignation decision was announced in a hurriedly arranged press conference at FIFA  headquarter in Zurich on Thursday, June 2.

After stepping down, the 79-year-old called for an extraordinary congress to elect his successor.

The schedule for the next congress has not being announced and according to reports, it could hold between December 2014 and March 2015 and Blatter will continue as president until then.

"I have been reflecting deeply about my presidency and about the forty years in which my life has been inextricably bound to FIFA and the great sport of football. I cherish FIFA more than anything and I want to do only what is best for FIFA and for football.

"Since I shall not be a candidate, and am therefore now free from the constraints that elections inevitably impose, I shall be able to focus on driving far-reaching, fundamental reforms that transcend our previous efforts.

"For years, we have worked hard to put in place administrative reforms, but it is plain to me that while these must continue, they are not enough.

"The Executive Committee includes representatives of confederations over whom we have no control, but for whose actions FIFA is held responsible. We need deep-rooted structural change.

"I have fought for these changes before and, as everyone knows, my efforts have been blocked."

Floyd Mayweather ‘Money’ remains undefeated

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

It was dubbed the 'Fight of the Century' which everybody around the world anticipated.

Celebrities from the movie world, music, sports, business and other industries flew private jets to see the fight.

Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jamie Foxx, Rihanna, Donald Trump, Chris Brown, Jay Z, Beyonce, 50 Cent where some of the celebrities present at the MGM Grand.

But at the end, it was a dull 12-round-affair as neither Floyd Mayweather nor Manny Pacquiao came close to the knockout.

Mayweather came with a game plan and he succeeded, coming out of his biggest test, still undefeated,

It was however a game of cat and mouse, as Mayweather systematically and tactically dodged and countered while Pacquiao charged and missed often.

Many on social media compared Mayweather tactics to that of Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho who also tactically frustrates opponent with a defensive approach and pouncing on a counterattack.

Just as Mourinho is about to win Chelsea another English Premier League title, Mayweather will be remember as the man who won the 'Richest Fight in Boxing History' as at this time.

For 12 rounds of the game, Mayweather proved himself once again the grand master of the noble art of self defence.

He concentrated on getting his points and guarding himself from Pacquiao who was looking for a knockout blow on Mayweather.

Three judges in the end decided on the score and Mayweather with leading  118-110 and 116-112 twice, was declared winner of the night.

"I thought I won the fight. I hit him more times than he hit me. I hurt him more than he hurt me," Pacquiao protested.

It was  mixed feelings for the 16,507 crowd in the MGM Grand Garden Arena, as some won bets while others lost.

Ex-Footballer claims Yobo’s mother-in-law cheated on him with a woman

Read Time:2 Minute, 12 Second

Retired Wimbledon and England striker, John Fashanu, has claimed his wife, Abigail Onyekwelu, are currently enmeshed in a messy divorce following allegations of extra-marital affairs from both parties.

On his part, the ex-football legend claims Abigail, who is Joseph Yobo's mother-in-law, cheated on him severally with a woman she refers to as her spiritual partner.

In an interview with the UK Mirror, 52-years old Fashanu said, 'The truth is she’s been cheating on me with a woman she calls her spiritual partner. I caught them in the bed many times. That was why I kicked her out of my house.'

However, 48-years old Onyekwelu denied Fashanu's accusations saying, 'She is a good friend to me. She has a husband and children. It is ridiculous. She was living with me for a while to get back on her feet.'

On been kicked out of the house, the grandmother, who recently welcomed a grand son, said, 'He didn’t kick me out of his house. We were living in my house. He couldn’t have kicked me out of my own house – I kicked him out.'

In an interesting twist, the beautiful Onyekwelu revealed that she caught the legendary footballer cheating on her with her maid and an unidentified woman in their bed.

In her words, 'I caught him in bed with two women, the housemaid and one other woman. There were two women, it was awful. They were on the bed. They were undressed. I said to them, ‘Who are you and what’s going on here?

'He told me that he doesn’t know what he’s doing and I should pray for him. He knows how to manipulate people, that’s one thing he is good at,' she revealed.

However, Fashanu denied the allegation saying, 'I certainly don’t have to sleep with my cleaner! This is me, John Fashanu, you’re talking to. It’s absolute nonsense. If she wants to make up that story, at least let her say it’s Beyoncé or someone.

'Don’t say it’s my cleaner, that’s just b******s. It’s not true at all,' he defended.

While Fashanu disclosed that he already filed for a divorce, Onyekwelu dropped that she didn't know he was going to file for divorce because he had been the one begging her not to expose their separation to the world.

English footballer who was filmed “scoring goals” with a female fan has been fired by the club

Read Time:1 Minute, 22 Second

Jay, who was not on the team lineup to play, was approached by the female fan. After chatting for a few minutes, Jay took the lady to the manager dugout, pulled down his pants and started having sex with her. Another fan caught the action on a cell phone.

He was fired by his club after the video went viral on social media. Chairwoman of the club, Anne Barker told the media; “Jay Hart has been dismissed from the club. I can't have somebody wearing the Clitheroe FC tracksuit bringing us down. It has brought the club into disrepute and it's not proper for him to scupper our reputation. I expect our players to act professionally. We expect a certain level of behaviour and discipline. And that wasn’t it.". Read Jay's apology after the cut…

Jay later apologized in a statement to his fans, his club and girlfriend:

"All I want say is that I regret doing what I did. I was drunk, I'd had more than a few drinks, and I want to say I'm sorry to my family and everyone involved at Clitheroe. I regret that I did it, not that I got caught. I've spoken and tried to sort things out with Bryony (his girlfriend)

“Everyone in the world knows about it, I just want to get my apology out there. I haven't seen the girl since, I don't have a clue who she is, don't have a clue.”
