Reports have emerged on Monday evening that Stephen Keshi confirmed that he is stepping down as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

News started circulating that Keshi decided to resign from his post after Nigeria's 2-0 loss to France on Monday which ended their campaign at the World Cup. The 52-year old was said to have told his players in the dressing room that he will no longer be the manager.

“I have to go back to my family and face fresh challenges,” Vanguard Sports quoted Keshi to have said this evening in Brasilia.

Keshi admitted that his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, will soon end and that he has not had new renewal talks . “My contract is almost up. Nobody has called me for negotiation. One cannot stay where he is not wanted’’. He is expected to take up the role as the national team manager of the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

Keshi though still has a contract with the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) until November next year, but a statement is yet to be issued over his position.

Also leaving the national team is skipper Joseph Yobo who has confirmed his retirement from the Super Eagles “I think I should give the younger ones the opportunity to forge ahead. I have nothing new to offer," Yobo said.
