Ailing President Umar Yar’Adua is dead after long illness

yaraduaYar’adua, who was born on August 16, 1951, was aged 58. He was flown to Saudi Arabia on November 23 2009 and returned home under darkness on February 24, this year. He died at about 10pm. He will be buried in Katsina tomorrow in accordance with Islamic rites. Jonathan will be sworn in this morning.

Codewit  learnt that news of his death first filtered out shortly after he breathed his last when some of his aides briefed Acting President Goodluck Jonathan and National Security Adviser, Gusau about his death.

Mr. Yar’adua spent much of his time as the Governor of Katsina State (1999-2007) battling a kidney related ailment. But his supporters said he had recovered sufficiently to contest the 2007 Presidential Elections after he got a kidney transplant.

But not long after he won the election and was sworn in, his health failed and he had to be flown abroad on a few occasions for treatment. Although the exact nature of Yar’Adua’s frequent illness was never truly known as his medical trips abroad were always shrouded in secrecy, the Presidency gave an indication of the nature of the sickness after the last trip to Saudi Arabia saying that he was to be treated for Acute pericarditis.
