A group, the De-fence for Yoruba People’s Rights, in Ondo State yesterday asked the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Abubakar to intervene in the investigation of the murder of a police Inspector, Adelakun Lawal in Ondo town by an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
Adelakun, a father of six, was allegedly murdered by his seniour colleague at a relaxation centre in Ondo town following a misunderstanding between them.
Until his death, he was attached to the Yaba Divisional Police Station in Ondo town
Addressing newsmen on the delay in the prosecution of the suspect, the president of DYPR, Chief Muyideen Olamoyegun, said the group decided to seek justice by drawing the attention of the IGP .
Olamoyegun said, “the slow pace of investigation and inability of the police to bring the perpetrator of the heinous crime to book several weeks after he was alleged to have committed the murder is worrisome.
“The alarm being raised by the group is to prevent the matter from suffering the fate that had befallen similar ones in the past”.
The cry for justice by the group is aimed at assuaging the agony currently being experienced by wives and family of the police officer who were made to lose their bread winners prematurely.
“One thing we would want to clarify is that our demand for justice and intervention of the IGP is not aimed at jeopardizing investigation .
”However, we are very much disturbed that days after the heinous crime was committed by a man that was arrested at the scene with the gun he allegedly used in killing the late police officer, he is yet to be arraigned.”
He expressed the fears that the matter could be swept under the carpet except the IGP intervened to save the situation.
Olamoyegun however assured members of the public that his group would not relent in its efforts until justice was done on the matter.
According to him “ a team of lawyers has been consulted on the matter while effort was being made to seek the assistance of the Nigeria Bar Association and other Human Rights Organisations in the country for possible legal assistance to the family of the deceased.
