NIGERIA: Boko Haram leader Shekau shot, escapes to Mali

Read Time:4 Minute, 18 Second

There were indications yesterday in Abuja, that the leader of the Boko Haram Islamic sect, Imam Abubakar Shekau was wounded during a gun battle with security men recently.

Sources said in Abuja that security agencies traced the whereabouts of Shekau, who succeeded late Mohammed Yusuf as leader of the sect to Mali, where he escaped to after sustaining injuries during a gun duel with soldiers of the Joint Task Force, JTF, a.k.a Operation Restore Order.

Sources told Saturday Vanguard that the Federal Government approved the deployment of 1,200 soldiers apparently because of the need to arrest the wounded Boko Haram leader.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika who addressed officers and soldiers of the Nigerian army shortly before they were airlifted to Mali Thursday in Kaduna, asked them to be extra vigilant as there are indications that some terrorists had sneaked into the country with the aim of causing havoc.

Ihejirika however, pointed out that the Nigerian Army was not resting on its oars as the war against terror was being won.

Saturday Vanguard learnt that the battle between the JTF and the sect members took place at Gao city, in the heart of Northern Mali presently under the control of Tuareg militants.
It was further learnt that Shekau, who is having N50million ransom  hanging on his head from the Federal Government, was ferried to Mali through one of the porous routes in the vast Nigerian border  without Customs and Immigration authorities getting wind of it.

Saturday Vanguard was told that while the Boko Haram leader was being given medication in Gao, the foreign sponsors of the sect’s activities in Nigeria, were busy, using his name to indoctrinate, train and recruit more members for the sect.

Shekau was said to have been shot at a checkpoint when he reportedly attempted to deceive operatives of the JTF by posing as a nomadic Fulani who was returning from a journey. However, on approach of the vehicle conveying him and members of his sect, ‘’a hot exchange of gunfire ensued as the sect members started firing at the soldiers who equally returned fire for fire.’’

During the crossfire, he and two other sect members with him escaped with gunshot wounds while two members of the sect were killed on the spot. Some AK 47 rifles were recovered from the vehicle.

While stating that most of the weaponry including IEDS recovered from Boko Haram members have been traced to the weaponry used during the Libyan uprising against late Libyan leader, Gaddafi, the source said Nigerian security agencies believed that the more sophisticated and deadly weaponry had gotten to the hands of sect members but they are unable to operate them because they are not trained for it.

The source cited the discovery of Shekau’s hideout and the training base for Boko Haram sect members to unleash terror on Nigerians as a further justification of the action of the federal government to deploy 1, 200 troops as well as Airforce fighter and transport aircraft to Mali to help flush out the Tuareg militants and their sponsors.

Saturday Vanguard further gathered that security has been beefed up along the Nigerian Army First Mechanized Division and the Third Armoured Division’s areas of responsibilities with the deployment of soldiers at the borders to complement the work of other security agencies following the escalation of the Mali crisis with a view to checkmating infiltrations into the country by terrorists.

Last December, a total sum of N290 million ransom was approved for anyone who could assist in locating Imam Abubakar Shekau and 18 other leaders of Boko Haram.

A release by the JTF listed the wanted Boko Haram leaders to include five members of the Shurra (the highest decision-making body of the sect) Committee and 19 of their commanders.

The five members of the Shurra Committee of the sect, including Imam Abubakar Shekau whose ramsom was N50 million, and Habibu Yusuf (a.k.a Asalafi), Khalid Albarnawai, Momodu Bama and Mohammed Zangina. Apart from Imam Shekau whose ransom was put at N50 million, the other Shurra members’ ransom was put at N25million each.

A ransom of N10 million each was put on the Boko Haram Commanders including, Abu Saad, Abba Kaka, Abdulmalik Bama, Umar Fulata, Alhaji Mustapha, (Massa) Ibrahim and Abubakar Suleiman-Habu a.k.a Khalid.
Other commanders also included Hassan Jazair,  Ali Jalingo,  Alhaji Musa Modu, Bashir Aketa, Abba Goroma, Ibrahim Bashir,   Abubakar Zakariya  and Tukur Ahmed Mohammed.

The JTF statement on the N290 million ransom then, reads in part; “They are wanted in connection with terrorist activities, particularly in the North East zone of Nigeria that led to the killings, bombings and assassination of some civilians, religious leaders, traditional rulers, businessmen, politicians, civil servants and security personnel, among others.

They are also wanted for arson and destruction of properties worth millions of naira. Therefore, anyone with information that will lead to the arrest of any of the listed terrorists or more will have the rewards (placed on them) as stated.’’

NIGERIA: Jaji Bomb Masterminds Arrested.

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 13 Second

18 year old Ibrahim Mohammed Alilullah of Ilobu village in Ilobu LGA of Osun state and 50 year old yam hawker from Jalingo in Taraba state, Mohammed Ibrahim Idris, were on Friday paraded by the Department of State Security Service, SSS, as being part of the masterminds of the bomb attack at St. Andrews Protestants Military Church in Jaji, Kaduna state, Northern Nigeria, on the 27th of November, 2011.
The suspects who were arrested in Rafin Gusa, a suburb in Kaduna metropolis confessed to being members of the Boko Haram sect. The teenager stated that he was indoctrinated into the dreaded sect by Late Bashir Madalla who trained him in the use of fire arms as well as production and priming of improvised explosive devices, IEDs.
The youngster told journalists at the SSS Headquarters in Abuja that he was introduced to the late sect leader by his Alfa, a muslim cleric who taught him and other children Islamic studies in Kaduna state.
According to him, the Alfa, whose name he gave as Raji gave his phone number to the late Boko Haram sect leader while he was visiting his parents at his home town of Ilobu, Osun state. The leader, he further stated, requested that he return to Kaduna that he had something for him to do. He complied and was picked up by the cleric and the late sect leader to the late sect leader’s house in the state.
Alilullah also said that he only functioned as a courier to the sect before the Jaji bomb attack. He said he used to pick up fertilizers and other equipment needed by the sect leader in bomb manufacturing. He also takes monies to some of the sect’s suppliers for goods delivered to the group.
In the course of responding to questions from the newsmen, Alilullah admitted being part of the group that attacked St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Badarawa, also in Kaduna state and St. Andrews Church in AFCSC, Jaji, Kaduna state.

On the Jaji attack, Alilullah, a junior secondary school drop out who spoke in fluent Yoruba language said that the late Bashir Madalla sent Late Mallam Lawal, one of the bombers who rammed one of the cars used in the operation into the church, to Damaturu, Yobe state to retrieve some military uniforms and weapons from a Boko Haram sect cell in Yobe.

He stated that Late Mallam Lawal personally wore the military uniform with the rank of Captain which afforded free access into the military formation in Jaji. Lawal it was who assumed leadership of the sect’s unit following the death of Bashir Madalla.
On his part, the 50 year old father of four daughters, Idris, told newsmen that he was recruited by Mallam Lawal who used to be a yam hawker like himself, in Jalingo sometime in August, 2012. Lawal later relocated him to Kaduna state and secured a two bedroom apartment for them at Rafin Guza which served as the sect’s safe house and operational base.

He said that one of the vehicles used in the Jaji attack, a Toyota Matrix, was primed by the youngster, Alilullah and the late Mallam Lawal in the apartment. He also said he was responsible for conducting surveillance on selected targets using the cover of a yam hawker.
The Deputy Director of the SSS, Marilyn Ogar, while appreciating the inestimable cooperation of Nigerians in the war against the perpetrators of terror, reassured the public of the collective resolve of security agencies to bring to an end the activities of unpatriotic elements and restore peace, security and harmony to the nation.
She also stated that some of the suspects apprehended alongside the duo are still being investigated, said paraded suspects would be handed over to the military whose facilities were attacked, for further investigations.

Nigeria bombing: We’ve no case to answer, suspects tell court

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 54 Second

Six alleged kingpins of the Boko Haram sect in Niger State, who were apprehended while on their way to Kaduna State to attack the venue of an event that was attended by Vice President Namadi Sambo in Kaduna on July 28, 2011, yesterday, challenged the powers of the Federal Government to prosecute them. They include Shuaibu Abubakar, Salisu Ahmed, Umar Babagana-Umar, Mohammed Ali, Musa Adam and Umar Ibrahim.

The States Security Service, SSS, which recommended their trial, had maintained that its investigations revealed that it was the accused persons that masterminded the explosion that rocked office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Suleja, Niger State, prior to the April 16, 2011, presidential election.

A senior Army officer who led the team of soldiers that caught the suspects at Gummel Junction at Kachia Kaduna on July 27, 2011, had in his evidence-in-chief told the trial court that a text message found in the in-box of a mobile handset confiscated from one of the suspects, revealed that each of the accused persons was promised an inheritance of 72 virgins in paradise, assuming they succeeded in bombing the event that was attended by the Vice President and some Northern governors.

Similarly, the high court had on December 20, 2012, admitted into evidence, 250 different explosive making devices that were allegedly recovered from the accused persons.

A representative of the Nigerian Army, whose identity was masked by the Federal Government, owing to the sensitive nature of the case, while tendering evidence in court, warned that the dangerous components of Improvised Explosive Device, IED, they were caught with could bring down the whole of the high court building in seconds.

Consequently, trial Justice Bilkisu Aliyu declined to take custody of the evidence comprising IEDs and bundles of connector wires, even as she granted the SSS leave to take them away for safe keeping pending when it would be needed for examination by the court.

Meanwhile, at the resumed hearing on the case yesterday, the accused persons, through their counsel, Mr Nureni Sulaiman, contended that the Federal Government failed to establish a nexus between them and the alleged crime, just as they expressed intention to make a no-case submission on the charge against them.

Basically, a no-case submission is made when an accused person believes that the prosecution has failed to prove the ingredients of the offence for which he is charged or that the evidence adduced in court was such that a judge cannot rely upon to pass a sentence.

Even though the accused persons made frantic efforts to make the application orally, trial Justice Aliyu declined to hear them, directing that they should file a formal application to that effect.

Meantime, the court yesterday admitted into evidence a black Honda Civic with registration number AG-94-NMG in which three of the suspects were arrested, even as the suspects conceded before the court that the car actually belonged to them.

Adjourning further hearing on the case till February 6 and 7 to enable the accused persons to enter a no-case-submission, Justice Aliyu ordered the defense counsel to file and serve the application on the prosecution within 14 days.

The six accused persons are standing trial over alleged multiple bombings and killings in Suleja, Madalla and environs.

The SSS had alleged that its undercover investigations revealed that they participated in various terrorist attacks that killed 28 persons between March and July.

However, though they had on September 30, 2011, pleaded not guilty to a 5-count charge that was preferred against them by the Federal Government, they have since remained at Kuje prisons from where they attend their trial.

The prosecution had alleged that six of them , “between June 4 and July 12, (both dates inclusive) at various locations in Suleja, Niger state, Azare, Nasarawa state and the FCT, did engage in an act of terrorism by encouraging through training persons now at large, the use of arms and ammunition, and the preparation, planting and detonation of improvised explosive devices for the purpose of terrorism and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 15 (2) of EFCC Act 2004 and punishable under the same section of the Act.”

They were said to have supervised the bombing of a village, Dakna, in Bwari, Abuja, on May 23; an incident SSS said resulted in the death of three Peace Officers, as well as detonated an improvised explosive device at a political rally in Suleja which resulted in the death of three persons too.

If convicted, the offence for which the accused persons are answering to attracts a punishment of life imprisonment.

U.S. Congress Pressurises Obama Over Boko Haram

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

Request On Designation Of Terror Sect Deferred

DETERMINED to review the US government’s handling of terrorist activities in Nigeria, the US Congress has directed the State Department to submit to both the Senate and the House of Representatives, within 90 days, a report “describing the strategy of the United States to counter the threat posed by Boko Haram.”

A second report — an intelligence assessment — has also been ordered by the US Congress on “the organisational structure, operational goals, and funding sources of Boko Haram,” a specific request made by a US-based Nigerian group of Christians — the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans (CANAN).

However, both houses of the US Congress have also added a Defence Department responsibility to the issue, which, up till now, was only the statutory purview of the State Department.

According to the Bill, which President Obama signed into law on January 2, both the US Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense are to jointly submit the report, which the law says would be confidential.

Observers of US government see the move by the Congress and President as a confidence-building measure and a consensus, amidst criticism of the State Department’s refusal to designate Boko Haram a terrorist organisation, as recommended by other US government agencies like the Justice Department and the FBI.

While the new bill, now enacted into law, does not mandate the labeling of Boko Haram as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO), as demanded by the CANAN, and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), US Congressional officials say it is a step in the right direction since the bill to designate sect an FTO will be reintroduced again in the new US Congress session that started on Thursday.

Two US Congressmen — Peter King (New York) and Patrick Meehan (Pennsylvania), who are playing active roles in the push for the US government to get tougher on Boko Haram, last week assured CANAN officials that the call to designate the sect an FTO would be re-tabled in the current Congress.

The law was one of the last-minute outcomes of last year’s US Congressional session that ended with the Fiscal Cliff agreement.

2012 in retrospect: Any respite from bombings in 2013?

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 40 Second

THE year 2012 may have come and gone. But it left in its wake the death of several persons;both young and old, no thanks to series of  terrorists attacks in some northern parts of the country.  Sadly, several women turned  widow and children orphaned, with several families still displaced , as their houses were blown into shreds  by bombs.
Although the history of bomb blasts in the country could be traced to 1986, when the founding Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch magazine, Mr Dele Giwa,  was killed by a mail bomb in his home in Ikeja, Lagos, followed by pockets of  explosions in some parts of the country.
But none, was targeted at the majority of Nigerians, with a  terrorist group laying claim to the act until  March 15, 2010, in  Warri, Delta state,  during an Amnesty Dialogue sponsored by Vanguard Media Limited, with a group of Niger Delta militants claiming responsibility. The group also claimed responsibility  for  the   October 1, 2010 bomb explosion that rocked the Eagle sqare, during Nigeria’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations in Abuja.
However, a worrisome dimension was introduced to the incidence of bomb explosions in the country,  following series  of blasts by the Boko Haram sect which has led to  the loss of over 1,000  lives since 2011 to date.
The first bomb explosion that signalled catastrophe ahead  for the country, occurred on January 1, 2011,  at an Abuja Army Barracks Mammy market, another on  April 8, 2011  in  Maiduguri, Borno State, on May 29, 2011,also at an Army barracks in Bauchi.
What can be regarded as the highpoint of the blast occurred on  June 16, 2011, when the terrorists threw caution to the dogs and  targeted the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, with the then Inspector-General of Police Hafeez Ringim escaping narrowly. Barely one month later, 50 persons were reported killed in a bomb attack in Maiduguri .
Not satisfied with the  devastating national  impact of  its attacks, the sect went ahead to blow up the United Nations Building in Abuja on August 26, 2011,  which claimed   twenty-three lives.
To round off year 2011, it gave  another  devastating  Christmas package to the country, by attacking churches in Abuja, Jos and Yobe states, where  families  who gathered to pray and celebrate a day which symbolizes harmony and good will towards others, were torn apart.
151 explosions in 2012
The list is endless in year 2012. Not even the home state of President Goodluck Jonathan whom the sect reportedly asked to resign, before it would cease fire was spared, as two  explosions  rocked Yenagoa, Bayelsa capital on January 21, 2012.. During the year under review, 58 persons reportedly lost their lives in Kaduna and Makurdi blasts on August 22.
One of the bomb blasts that would linger in the memory of Nigerians, was the one  in Kano state, where an electronic media journalist with Channels Television, Eneche Akogwu was killed while covering the scene of a bomb explosion.
Military and Police formations as well as Prisons and Immigration facilities, were not spared by the rampaging terrorists. Same was the fate of Churches, Mosques, eateries and residential apartments, thereby sending innocent and helpless Nigerians to their unprepared graves, for just no cause, while several  families  were thrown into eternal mourning.
Crime Guard can authoritatively state   that  between March and December 2012,  there were a total of 535 IED threats. But out of this figure, a total of 151 explosions succeeded while  384 cases  were averted by the Police Anti Bomb Explosive Ordnance Department EOD, with some of the discoveries   made in  Akwa-Ibom, Basyelsa, Ondo, Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi states.
Information made available to Crime Guard, revealed that most of the  Improvised Explosive Devices (IED); both exploded and unexploded, were concealed in bottles;  fire extinguishers; buckets with steel balls and detonators, vehicles with timing remote controlled devices with a Q-link receiver.
Some of them were also discovered to be concealed inside non-alcoholic drinks and vegetable oil For instance the IED  explosion at a Military check point in Bauchi on March 14, 2012 was concealed in a  Lucozade  bottle, Vegetable oil and Viju Milk containers. The one that exploded at the Prison Service, Konduga, Maiduguri, on March 2012, was contained in a 380 ml Peak Milk tin, while that on Shguwa Police Division in Adamawa State  on February 2012, was packed in four cans of Star and Amstel Malta.
Spokesman for Police Anti Bomb  Explosive Ordnance Department (EOD,) Mr. Gbolahan Folorunsho when contacted,  attributed the command’s achievement to  intensified intelligence, security consciousness and public enlightenment lectures. According to Folorunsho, an Assistant  Superintendent of Police, “during the period under review; the command sensitized members of the public, Corporate organizations, religious groups , sister security agencies, ministries and government establishments on the method of identification of basic IED components and bomb threat response techniques”.
The command he further stated, embarked on series of explosives escorts across the country from manufacturers/marketers magazines to various end users storage facilities. This he explained, was to ensure that the materials were not diverted to wrong users, adding that the officers adhered strictly to standard explosive movement procedures as approved by the IGP.
ASP Folorunsho, said  other measures put in place by EOD,  included the inspection of explosives Magazines and supervision of existing and functional Quarries sites. “ EOD operatives also monitor the handling, storage , usage of explosives and allied materials by end users nationwide”, noting that so far, no incident of theft or mishap was reported at explosives magazines and quarry stores across the country.
But he was quick to add that  the synergy between the Police and the Military also helped to achieve the feat. “ In the immediate past, the personnel in our Units  encountered arrest by the Military during the process of escorting explosives and its allied materials from Ports of entry to dealers magazines. But when the present Inspector-General of Police came on board, this problem was the first he tackled and he was able to fashion out a better modus oparandi  for EOD operations in escorting explosives from point to points as stipulated in the Explosives Acts and Regulations. This   strengthens our operational ability and  has produced dividend in the fight against terrorism.
Police Anti Bomb  EOD command through our units across the country,, regularly embark on  Joint search Operations with the Joint Task Force JTF to carry out  raids and good successes of recovery  of items  suspected to be IEDs were made in several cases.”.
Preparation for 2013
In preparation for year 2013,the command held its first EOD workshop two weeks ago, with the theme’   ‘ Establishment of Explosives and Allied materials Database in Nigeria Police and measures in Ensuring Control over illegal use and proliferation of Explosives materials’.  The workshop according to the Commissioner of Police, Mr Folusho Adebanjo, was to brainstorm and adopt measures which would make its activities less cumbersome this year.
Other areas of preparedness he said, was in the area of training and research development for the personnel to be professionally ready to combat any act of insurgency in the country, disclosing that  over  500 police officers and men  approved by the IG,had been trained as Bomb technicians and investigators across the units.
It is therefore expected that with the preparation on ground , coupled with those from other security agencies, Nigerians, particularly those in the northern parts of the country  will heave sighs of relief this year.

Oritsejafor gives condition for dialogue with Boko Haram

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 18 Second

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has reacted to call by former governor of Yobe State now Senator Abba Bukar Ibrahim for dialogue with Boko Haram sect, saying any dialogue with the group without compensation to Christians is null.

Oritsejafor in statement emailed to this reporter by CAN spokesman, Kenny Ashaka, quoted the CAN president as saying, “Let me state that any dialogue that ignores the issue of compensation for the families of Christians killed and churches bombed or burnt, businesses destroyed, would be unacceptable to the Christian Association of Nigeria.

“I believe that elders in the north, especially those in the north-east zone hold the key to the cessation of violence in the region and should begin to discuss how to end the unprovoked attacks on Christians and their churches.”

Oritsejafor faulted Ibrahim’s position that Boko Haram’s insurgency was  sparked by inequality, neglect and injustice.

“The statement by the senator that ‘we can find a way really to help dialogue with this group; after all, they are all Nigerians at least as far as we know…’ is overly reckless, irresponsible and insensitive, just as it is a panacea for encouraging  the increasingly violent and daring sect,” he said.

He advised that “The federal government should, therefore, not succumb to blackmail from any quarters on account of the Boko Haram issue but should remain focused in dealing with the sect members in accordance with the laws of the land.”

Read Time:1 Minute, 34 Second

Twelve persons were killed by gunmen across the Nigerian north east state of Borno—all in a day, further cementing its reputation as Nigeria’s most dangerous state.

In Maiduguri, a trader, Alhaji Abubakar Girigiri, 58, was shot dead by gunmen at his warehouse in the Bolori area.

A witness told newsmen in Maiduguri that the gunmen came to the warehouse on foot, pretending to be customers before shooting him.

The witness said “a group of four teenagers arrived the warehouse on foot and met Girigiri attending to his business.

“After a short while, two of them brought out guns from their trousers and shot him at close range,” the witness, who identified himself as Malam Modu Lawal, said.

Lawal added that the businessman died on the spot.

“We tried to rush him to the hospital for help but he died before we could do anything.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in Borno, Mr Gideon Jibrin, confirmed the story but said the police were yet to get full details of the incident.

Jibrin also confirmed the killing of seven persons in Jere Local Government Area of the state by gunmen.

He said: “the police are trying to get the full details of the report, so we can unravel the mystery behind the killings.’’

The Joint Task Force (JTF) on Operation Restore Order also confirmed the killing of three security men in the early hours of Thursday at the Ruwan Zafi area of Maiduguri.

The JTF Spokesman, Lt.-Col. Sagir Musa, in a statement in Maiduguri, stated that the task force was already after the suspected killers.

“This is to confirm that three security men were killed in the early hours of the day by suspected members of the Boko Haram group.

“Efforts are on to apprehend the killers,” Musa said
