Some Basic Igbo Phrases

(Bold letters have a `·’ underneath them)

Nne m zuru azu—My mother bought some fish
Ala Igbo di mma—Igbo Land is good
Ufodu anyi bi ofesi—Some of us live abroad
Nnaemeka na-asu Igbo—Nnaemeka speaks Igbo
Nna m nwere onyonyo—My father has television
Adaeze bu nwata akwukwo—Adaeze is a school girl
Ndi mmadu choro asusu Igbo—People need Igbo Language
Ukwa di m mma—I like bread-fruit
Ugba masiri ndi Igbo—Igbo people like oil-bee
Kelechi na Abumchi na-achi—Kelechi gets along with Abumchi
Amerika mepere emepe—America is advanced
Achicha bu nri—Bread is food
Amanze nwere agba—Amanze has some paints
Ha ritere chaachaa—They won gambling
Soro etum—Beware of virus
Ka chi foo, Daniel—Good night, Daniel (this is as good as it gets…the highest honor possible in Igbo Land)
Nje no ebe nile—Bacteria are everywhere
Agwa oma di mma—Good behavior is good
Agwa mara nwa m—My child has fever
Nne m mere Ogiri—My mum made some soup flavor
Obi na-eje akwukwo—Obi goes to school
Chizoma na-aga akwukwo—Chizoma is going to school
Aha m bu Chike—My name is Chike
Dirhem na-eje ulo-akwukwo i nya moto—Dirhem goes to riding school
O na so Gide uso i nya moto na-ubochi Wednesday—Gide likes to drive on Wednesdays
Ubulum nwu nyha—My brain died yesterday
Nne na Nna m nyelum afa; Wa ewere ike ichoputa ezigbo—My parents never named me; they couldn’t come up with a good enough name for me
Bia! I ma na a fulum ya!—Man! I couldn’t even see her!
I ga mu nwata echi—You’re having child tomorrow
