Anambra State Governor Peter ObiAnambra State Governor Peter Obi, gave what could pass for governorship endorsement recently when he told the congregation of Catholic faithful and others that one of the illustrious sons of the state had done much that everybody was proud of him.

Speaking about  Dr. Obinna Uzoh, at the All Saints Catholic Parish, Ihiala, at a special Mass to mark in the philanthropist’s 50th birthday and 25th anniversary of humanitarian service, on March 17, Obi said that Uzoh is a “humane and good man whose philanthropy has not only manifested in charity to the church and humanity but also the entire society.”

Describing Uzoh as the finest ambassador of Anambra State, Governor Obi said: “I can confidently  attest to what he wrote about himself of being an apostle of politics without bitterness. He is a fine politician. We need more people like him,and I pray God to grant him many more years to enable him continue his good works to the state, nation and humanity,” Obi said.

Governor Obi was reechoing the view of Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Dr. Valerian Maduka Okeke, who praised Uzoh previously when a N350 million-students hostel he donated to the Catholic Church was commissioned at Holy Family Youth Village, Amansea, near Awka, for his love for the less privileged.

According to the cleric, Uzoh has touched the less privileged, widows and the needy in society, adding that through his foundation, he had trained thousands of people in the universities and colleges. He also said that the jobless and indigent youths have benefited from Uzoh’s foundation.

The archbishop poured encomiums on Uzoh for his charity, adding that the donation of the hostel building to the church will go a long way in assisting the archdiocese to realise its objective of setting up the youth village.

He said that the church was inspired into building the youth village to create a centre where youth could learn moral values and principles that would make them quality members of the society and leaders of tomorrow. He said the church was worried when our youths, especially those on campus, suddenly became social deviants: prostitution, cultism, armed robbery and other un-cultured behaviour as if they were part of the universities’ curriculum.

Archbishop Okeke maintained that many people could have being wallowing in ignorance and abject poverty if not for the foundation that assisted them to engage in useful enterprise while some obtained western education to become equipped and better members of the society.

Also speaking about Uzoh, the Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Bishop Hillary Okeke, eulogised Uzoh for his exemplary life at 50.

He told the congregation at the All Saints Catholic Parish: “We are celebrating a man whom God raised from a humble background to a colossus.”

He enjoined other well-endowed Nigerians to emulate the good spirit of Uzoh by reaching out to the less privileged  because goodness done to humanity is for God.

Uzoh’s day of glory had started on March 16, when he donated a magnificent students hostel. He had declared that he was motivated to build the hostel to support the church, in its quest to inculcate into our youths lost morals.

Uzoh contended that success cannot be achieved when young ones engage in useless and uncreative enterprise that would be counter-productive to their aspiration. He stated that brighter future and success are achieved through dint of hard work, while he enjoined youths to harken to the advice on hard work instead of sitting on the fence resting on their oars.

The use of social networks, according to him, should be used in the interest of humanity, as he appealed to the youths to be mindful of hidden dangers of Information Communication Technology, ICT.

He urged them to use the ICT gadgets to share moral values, aspirations and evangelise the gospel. “For it is you who are to receive the torch from the hands of your elders, and to live in the world at the period of the most massive transformations ever realised in its history. It is you who, will shape the society of tomorrow. You will either be saved or perish with it, build with enthusiasm a better world than what we have today,” Uzoh cautioned.
