The Provocative Cleric Called Ejike Mbaka

Founder of Adoration Ministry, Enugu Catholic Archdiocese, Rev. Fr Ejike Mbaka is doing everything possible to make a mess of Christianity. The other day, he was on television, anointing Patience Jonathan while at the same time praising the Jonathan administration. He also used the opportunity to heap abuses on the opposition APC, declaring the party a supporter of the terrorist Boko Haram sect. This same Mbaka declared on that day that Patience would return as First Lady this year. Only God know what transpired between Mbaka and the First Lady; I believe Patience must have made some promises which she did not fulfill. Ike Ekweremadu, the Deputy Senate President who accompanied patience to the Church must help us out here. I gathered that Mbaka had invited Jonathan and Patience to the church but the President turned it down. Patience dashed to the place.

Just last week, Mbaka turned around to heap abuses on Jonathan and declared that the President would lose his second term bid. Mbaka is suddenly telling Nigerians to reject Jonathan and vote for Muhammadu Buhari. This is what people like Patience who goes about bowing for humans beings get.

This cleric is doing a great disservice to the body of Christ. Going by the rules of the Catholic Church, I expect him to be sanctioned. I was greatly relieved when the Catholic Bishop of Abuja Metropolitan See, Cardinal John Onaiyekan declared that the priest went overboard in his statement insinuating that Jonathan’s administration had been plagued with bad luck and poor performance.
The Cardinal declared: “Mbaka will take responsibilities for his own actions. I do not believe in my mind that the way things are in Nigeria, any Catholic priest has the mandate to decide which of the political contestants should be voted for. What most of us will do is to tell people to vote according to their conscience and then, we tell the authorities to allow people to vote freely and fairly. I wouldn’t be surprised if most people are not happy with the statement he made. From my reactions, you should see that I do not agree with him. I don’t believe a priest should be doing that. But, like I said, Mbaka is a priest of his own type. If he was in my archdioceses, I will have sanctioned him long ago for the kind of things and utterances that he makes. But, he is not under my diocese; he has a Bishop to handle that if there is any need. I hope that people are not thinking that we are sending Mbaka to talk rubbish. If you want to hear anything even not official but at least, authoritative, then, you listen to the bishops rather than him. I don’t see any bishop talking that way.”
The President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama added: “It is completely out of place for a Catholic priest to be partisan. I tell you, even the Canon Law forbids a priest to engage in partisan politics. Nigerians should avoid making unguided statements and hasty generalisation on national issues like the 2015 general election.”
My advice to Mbaka is very simply. Please, stay away from politics and allow your members vote according to their conscience. You have no business backing candidates or political parties. I expect you to pray for all of them (politicians) when they come to you and wish them luck. To the First Lady, place your faith in God Almighty and stop going about bowing before men. They will only deceive you and collect your money. Learn to stand by the promises of God the Creator. Those who worship Him wholeheartedly will have no regret. Seek ye only the anointing of God the Creator. Any weapon fashioned against his anointed shall not prosper; it shall be crushed.

Wamakko Should Address Issue of Water Shortage in Sokoto
News filtering in from Sokoto State about water shortage in the capital is not encouraging. There is acute water shortage bedeviling many parts of Sokoto metropolis due to the dwindling performance of the state’s water works. Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wammakko looks muddled about how to tackle the problem. I gathered that he has commenced the drilling of boreholes in some parts of the metropolis. This is a problem he could not solve in almost eight years. I doubt if he is capable of doing anything with less than five months left for him to get out of that office. Meanwhile, my passionate plea to Wamakko is to settle the mounting retirement benefits of pensioners in the state before he leaves. He should also implement the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS) for teachers at Sokoto State Polytechnic, Shehu Shagari College of Education and College of Legal Studies.

Obasanjo as an Ordinary Motor Park Tout
President Goodluck Jonathan was very diplomatic when he said some ex-Nigerian leaders were behaving like ordinary motor park touts. Well, let me say it unequivocally that the former president Olusegun Obasanjo I watched on television on Tuesday lecturing market women in his house on the nation’s foreign reserves clearly behaved like a motor park tout. He threw caution to the wind. Obasanjo did not behave like a man that had occupied the highest office in the land. He did not show the finesse expected from a man of his status. Obasanjo is clearly knowledgeable about foreign reserves management, but chose to behave like a tout in order to score cheap political points against Jonathan. I am nonplussed by his deportment. How can he accuse Jonathan administration of squandering over $45 billion left in the external reserves when he left office in 2007? Reserves are not cast in stone. They are used to fund imports. Ours is a mono-product economy and our reserves fluctuate in line with developments in the global oil market. That was why it peaked at $62 billion in September 2008 because crude oil was selling for over $140 per barrel. Is Obasanjo not aware that part of our Excess Crude savings, a component of the reserves, was shared to governments at all levels during the global financial crisis in 2008-2009? The sharing continued thereafter because the governors piled pressure on Jonathan. ECA is also being used to pay for fuel subsidies for the entire nation. Is he not aware that the CBN has been using part of the reserves to defend the Naira? Of course, he knows all these but chose to be economical with the truth.

Christmas without Salaries in Cross River
Liyel Imoke of Cross River State has joined the unenviable list of governors bashing civil servants. Most civil servants in Cross River State had a bleak Christmas last year. While Imoke and his wife were gyrating at Calabar Carnival, his workers were only paid November salaries on Christmas Eve. Most of them used the salaries to settle their creditors. The Cross River Urban Development workers (mainly street sweepers) were not that lucky. They are being owed five-month salaries while Liyel blew millions of naira on Calabar carnival. Some of these street sweepers earn as little as N5000 monthly. Things are really not shaping up in Cross River. This is one of the states unable to pay the approved minimum wage of N18,000. Civil servants are owed salaries for December 2014 both at the state and local government levels. For workers promoted about a year ago, their accumulated arrears have not been paid. Some ministries, department and agencies have not received their grants for as much as six months. The N1.6 billion Obudu Dam rehabilitation has been abandoned. Calabar to Obudu road is in a mess. Ogoja axis is extremely bad. Liyel, over to you.

Godswill Akpabio is Still Deceiving Himself
Governor Godswill Akpabio’s media men have been all over the place yelling that his choral group had broken the world record for the largest number of Christmas carol singers in the world. They said the record, which had been officially certified by the Guinness Book of World Records was broken by Akpabio’s Unity Choir, a 25,272 man-choral group, in a concert in the Uyo Township Stadium on December 13, 2014. Will this record put food on the tables of millions of struggling Akwa-Ibomites? Will this improve the take home of challenged Akwa-Ibom civil servants? Will this help to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates in the state? Will this create jobs for thousands of unemployed Akwa-Ibomites? Has this improved the state’s Internally Generated Revenue?  Something is clearly wrong somewhere. We have to get our priority right amidst so much poverty. Akpabio simply wasted tax-payers’ money on this worthless show. I am very sure that he would have to account for this someday. Meanwhile, the Akwa Ibom governor should note that nothing is happening at dilapidated Government Technical College, Ewet and Etinan Institute.
