South-South politicians drum support for Oyegun

Irked by the gamut of accusations heaped on Chief John Oyegun, politicians and political office holders in the South-South geo-political zone Monday praised the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing him as a man of conviction who cannot be bought, no matter the price.

The call for Oyegun’s resignation drew fire from the leaders, describing it as ridiculous and unfortunate.

“All kinds of invectives have been hurled in the direction of the national chairman. Politicians behind this wicked agenda want to remain relevant in the political terrain” they said.

In a press statement issued in Port-Harcourt and signed by the National Chairman of Politicians and Political Office Holders in the South-South (PPOHSS) Chief Julius Ikuru, the leaders said Oyegun had served the party well and needed to be commended by all well-meaning people in the country.

Praising Oyegun for playing politics with integrity and honour, the leaders said there was no basis asking him to resign.

“Oyegun is an administrator of high repute, brilliance and excellence. He has dignity and integrity and he is a study in humility.”

They also advised those threatening the leadership of the party with fire and brimstone because of their narrow and private interests not to allow Nigeria to waste another four years.

“Politicians must play politics not as a bellicose contest but as a sport which must produce a winner. They must set aside their differences and harness their energies to the task of development”

“Oyegun has elevated party leadership to new heights. He deserves national gratitude and should be celebrated” the statement added.

We will not rest until every displaced person returns home, says Mr Osinbajo

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 45 Second

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari, has delivered a message of hope, restoration and comfort to Nigerians affected by the insurgency in the North East when he visited one of the several IDP camps in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

He assured Nigerians displaced by the insurgency that the federal government will not rest until everyone has been resettled back to their homes.
A statement from the office of the Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity) to the presidency Malam Garba Shehu reads:

The Vice President, accompanied by the Borno State Governor Kashim Shetimma and the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mohammed Sani Sidi, visited the Dalori Camp in the state capital, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Garbai El-Kanemi.

One of the major highlights of his visit was his stop at the Teaching Hospital where he interacted with a number of bomb victims undergoing treatment in the hospital. There he met Aisha Ibrahim, a baby girl who suffered severe burns from a terrorist bomb explosion. Touching the baby girl and comforting the mother Ms. Mariam Ibrahim, Prof Osinbajo promised that plastic surgery would be explored to improve her situation and enhance her recovery.

Speaking at the Dalori camp, one of the 22 camps with over 18,000 IDPs, the VP said the President "out of great concern for the welfare and well being of the very many men, women and children who are in this camp, asked me to come and to join the Governor to see for myself what exactly is going on in the IDP camps."

Continuing, he said the concern was not just for the IDP camps in Borno State, but all the other states -ie Adamawa and Yobe that have been affected by terrorist acts and insurgency.

"The President is extremely concerned especially about the welfare of the women and children, and of course the displacement of the people in the Northeast and in particular those who are here in Borno State, " Osinbajo said after touring the camp interacting with the IDPs including men, women and children.

"President Buhari wanted me to go round and have some conversations, and we have tried to do so today. From the brief interactions I have had, it is quite clear there has been a great deal of human suffering, a great deal of trauma, " the Vice President observed.

According to him, "the work of resettlement involves a great deal. It involves not just taking the people back to where they came from, but rebuilding their homes, rebuilding their markets, and rebuilding their places of worship."

His visit to the camp, is only the beginning of the process, the VP explained, stressing that "our task has only just started, until every single person who is in a displaced camp is back in their homes, we cannot rest. Until every single child, who is an orphan is taken care of, we cannot rest."

In order to accomplish the task, Prof Osinbajo noted that the federal government will be partnering with the state governments, development partners, and with the aid workers adding that "all of this, we must do within the shortest possible time, and that is exactly why I am here."

Briefly hinting on the potential cost and the implications of that for an administration that inherited substantial and huge public debts, the VP stated that the rebuilding "is an enormous task and it involves a lot of money."

He said, "as you know the administration is grappling with huge debts that the FG owes. In fact as you know, in the past few months, even in order to pay salaries of workers not just in the states but also in the FG, governments have had to look for ways and means to pay those salaries."

Yet even under those circumstances, Osinbajo assured the IDPs that the federal government "knows that you who are suffering from terrorist acts are even worse off. That is why your matters are priorities to the federal government."

During the visit he went into a temporary class room on the camp for children, speaking words of inspiration to them.

He told the children who gave a cheering applause that "the president has sent me to tell you that he is thinking about you everyday, and your parents everyday to make sure that you go back home and that you resettle and that you continue with your education."

He added that "we are here to make sure that we see how you live here and how you are doing. And also to find out whatever support the government can give to you and your families. Very soon, you will be able to go back home."

He concluded by telling the children "everyone of you will be a great Nigerian. You will all stay in school, you will be doctors, you will be lawyers, you will be engineers, you will be good politicians, you will be governors, you will be presidents. Yes, that is what will happen."

The Vice President conveyed the appreciation and thanks of the President for the efforts of Governor Shetimma, NEMA, UNICEF, Red Cross, other development partners and all those who have been supporting the displaced Nigerians all across the IDP camps in the affected states.

All through the visits to the camp, the hospital, the palace and across town, the Vice President received a warm reception with the people lining up the streets waving, singing and applauding him.

Wike’s plan to borrow N100b from various banks exposed

Wike’s plan to borrow N100b from various banks exposed …Seeks loans in tranches of N10b, N20b, N30 & N40b

The All Progressives Congress, APC, Rivers State Chapter has uncovered a strategic plan by Governor Nyesom Wike to obtain loans totalling N100b in the few months he is expected to be in power as the governor of Rivers State thereby plunging the state into an abyss of debt and economic servitude.

The Spokesman of the APC, Chris Finebone who made this known in a statement said, according to the plan, the governor plans to collect the said amount in tranches of N10b, N20b, N30b and N40b within a period of two months.

The statement read:

Meanwhile, within the past two weeks, Governor Nyesom Wike has already sought and gotten the approval of his lap-dog Rivers State House of Assembly to obtain N10b and N20b loans from Zenith Bank PLC and Access Bank PLC respectively.

Information we are privy to strongly indicates that the governor and his men have started negotiation with Heritage and Eco Banks to obtain another loan of N30b in the coming week or so. This will bring the total amount of loan obtained by the embattled governor to N60b in less than 45 days as governor of Rivers State.

The APC can only agree that the good people of Rivers State have ended up in the notorious Lagos buses used in robbing unsuspecting citizens popularly called ‘one chance.’ With the short-term Wike-led government of Rivers State, indeed, we have all entered a ‘one chance’ bus.

Seriously speaking, it boggles the mind that a sitting governor of a state will embark on such wanton collection of loans by selling the dummy of completing projects to innocent Rivers people without consideration for the long-term negative economic implication of mortgaging the future of the state.

Again, what the ensuing debacle has confirmed is that this government has no concrete plan of its own prior to inauguration especially if the Governor who should be the chief executive officer of the state only recently set up a Steering Committee on Development of Blue Print for Rivers State Government. The question then is: what was the strategic plan of Barr. Nyesom Wike for seeking to govern Rivers State?

The APC would like to state that beyond the dummy of borrowing to complete projects which the governor has been selling to Rivers people, the real intention of Governor Wike’s reckless borrowing is to provide funds for his cronies who have started showing signs of disenchantment and the need to deepen his war chest preparatory to a re-run election that is looming.

Sadly enough, the governor’s obscene borrowing spree is mortgaging the lives and future of the present generation and generation yet unborn to years of economic servitude. As long as the scheme of this governor succeeds, we all and our children yet unborn will be eternally tied to the apron-strings of those cavalier banks that are conniving with the governor while he walks free after being sent packing as governor in a few months’ time.

For the APC, the matter is graver than the governor probably knows. Governor Nyesom Wike should not spend the future of our generation and that of our unborn children in advance. And for the unborn generation, it will amount to robbing them of their existence which the governor does not have a right to because it will be within their human rights to demand reparation by which time the perpetrator may not be around anymore.

Let Wike begin the cleansing in his government– Rivers APC

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 31 Second

The All Progressives Congress, APC, Rivers State Chapter has congratulated Governor Nyesom Wike for finally accepting the need to rid Rivers State of kidnappers and armed criminal gangs.

The party in a statement signed by it spokesman, Chris Finebone said, “This follows the governor’s reported readiness to seek an amendment to the existing law on kidnapping and other serious crimes which was put in place by the last administration of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. The amendment will be to include the demolition of houses belonging to kidnappers and criminals, amongst other provisions”.

The APC called on the governor to begin the cleansing from his own government because charity, they say, begins at home, adding that by implication, it woud serve as an indication that the governor has realised that it is wrong to employ the services of criminals during elections.

Continuing the statement said, “it is a known fact that Governor Wike’s government is populated by all manner of known kidnappers, murderers, and criminal elements who committed and are still committing all manner of atrocities against APC members and innocent law-abiding residents and people of Rivers State”.

“A good example of this character trait of Wike’s political associates was at play during the last sham election of March 28 and April 11 in Rivers State where several lives were violently snuffed out and other innocent persons kidnapped or maimed by these persons” the press release further explained.

The APC reminded Wike to abide by the Biblical injunction which says, “Physician, heal thyself.”

“We are sure that if and when Governor Nyesom Wike follows this simple Christian command, the winner will be the numerous peace-loving people and residents of our beloved State” the statement concluded.

Niger Delta leaders extol Sylva, suggest him to Buhari

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 30 Second

Niger Delta leaders on Sunday described former Bayelsa State governor, Chief Timipre Sylva as a leader with credibility, character, calm, and strives to better the reputation of the country, saying his loyalty to President Muhammadu Buhari is unshakeable.

Rising from a meeting in Port-Harcourt, the leaders praised Sylva for sacrificing his comfort to work tirelessly for Buhari’s victory.

Recalling his sterling performance as the governor of Bayelsa State, the leaders said the ex-governor performed excellently in most sectors, particularly by devoting his energies and state resources to solving the problems of infrastructure development, training of the youths in Information and Communication Technology in India, sustaining overseas scholarship, protecting oil installations in the creeks, ensuring life changing developmental projects, attracting foreign investments, laying solid foundation for growth and investing in skill development and creating job centres in the state.

“Mr. Sylva has a humble disposition, simplicity and humane disposition towards the people; virtues that endeared him to the masses, saying his commitment to principle in the practice of politics, the rule of law and the best democratic tradition of fairness were some of the attributes that brought him into collusion with his enemies. He can do a good job”.

The Director of Communications of the People’s Movement, Mrs. Ibifuro Tatua in a statement after the meeting said Sylva created a very favourable and conducive environment for common growth in Bayelsa State.

“He pioneered the state’s industrial growth and dictated the pace of development in sports, human and physical development in the south- south geo-political zone. He worked so hard to make life meaningful to the good people of Bayelsa State. He gained respect around the country and among his peers” the statement said.

The leaders also praised President Buhari for steps so far taken, listing good communication skills, open-mindedness, ability to satisfy civilians, proper handling of money, willingness to take intelligent risks, familiarity with the law, excellent sense of leadership and being fair with all as qualities that must be met by those who will serve alongside him in government.

They urged Mr. President to appoint only honest, dedicated, committed, and God fearing individuals into sensitive positions.

Stressing that Sylva has a good understanding of the issues faced by governments; the leaders said he would throw his impressive experience into helping Mr. President accelerate his reform and efficiency programmes.

“He will drive the government’s efficiency and reform programmes. He will bring a more strategic and commercial focus to government. He will inject best practice into government. He will work for Nigeria and not to increase his wealth. He will translate the actual wants of the people into the vision and mission of the government”.

“Sylva is a consummate politician, proven administrator and a bridge builder. He is a man of honour, integrity and dignity” the statement added.

Olejeme, NSITF and social protection

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 7 Second

Dr. Ngozi Olejeme possesses charm, class, beauty, elegance and a caring sensibility.

Mention Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and immediately it conjures images among Nigerians of this very energetic woman. NSITF has become a leading public organization in the country.

It didn’t take long for Dr. Olejeme to make her mark. A woman seeking ways of bettering workers collective interest, Olejeme’s leadership skills saw to the emergence of the Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA).

The enactment of the Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA) 2010 which repealed the obsolete Workmen’s Compensation Act (WCA) of 1942 is of immense importance to the workers of Nigeria as the scheme has achieved tremendous success.

Well amongst the objective of the Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA), 2010 is to provide for an open and fair system of guaranteed and adequate compensation for all employees or their dependants for any death, injury, diseases or disability arising out of or in the course of employment as well as provide rehabilitation to employees with work-related disabilities as provided in the Act.

The Act also gives the opportunity to establish and maintain a solvent compensation fund managed in the interest of employees and employers, provide for fair and adequate assessments for employers, provide an appeal procedure that is simple, fair and accessible, with minimal delays as well as combine efforts and resources of relevant stakeholders for the prevention of workplace disabilities, including the enforcement of occupational safety and health standards.

What many regard as a phenomenal feat, NSITF) is currently paying compensation to injured workers, treating and rehabilitating them where necessary. It is paying handsome benefits to a deceased employee’s spouse for the life of that spouse as long as he/she does not remarry, or to the child till age 21 or when the child graduates from a tertiary institution. The fund is also saddled with the responsibility of providing social security to the aged and unemployed.

Recently, the British Standard Institute awarded the ISO27001 certificate to NSITF, making it one of the leading social security institutions in Africa.

“With the certification, the agency has strategically endowed itself with values that repose stakeholders’ confidence on the quality of what they get from the funds when they do business. We now have in place a system that can detect the minuet risk factors in our operations thereby reducing loss to its barest minimum. NSITF is proud to be among a very elite group of public institutions whose security practice and drive for excellence in its operations meet the rigorous iso27001 standard. Achieving this milestone makes the fund a leading social security institution in Africa. It is critical to the NSITF transformation roadmap. NSITF is happy to be a global best practice government institution embracing the highest echelon of standards that ensure efficiency and dependency of its operations as a result of its development of global standard information security mechanism” Olejeme said at the presentation ceremony in Abuja.

A stalwart champion of workers’ pension and a highly caring person who loves pensioners profoundly, Olejeme wants the best for retirees. She is not only working relentlessly to make workers and pensioners financially independent but actively raising the quality of life for every worker by providing social security protection and safety nets for all Nigerians against deprivation and income insecurity in accordance with National and International laws, conventions and world best practices.

Though Labour analysts are quick to praise Olejeme for establishing a system of transparency, strengthening  NSITF and providing  adequate operational infrastructure, Dr. Olejeme is doing everything possible to provide social protection against the risk of sickness, disability, injury, unemployment and old age.

APC criticizes Wike over mass sack of lecturers, threat to sack 13,200

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 24 Second

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has descended heavily on the Caretaker Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, over the sack of 344 Lecturers of the Rivers State Polytechnic recruited in September 2014 by the immediate past administration of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. “This is madness taken too far,” Rivers APC Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, said Thursday in a statement in Port Harcourt. He also lamented the order handed down to the Director of the institution, Mr. Obiankor Elechi, to proceed on compulsory leave with immediate effect.

“It is also being reported that the 13,200 teachers employed by Governor Amaechi to ease the suffering of unemployed Rivers youths are programmed to be sacked by next week as part of Wike’s ‘Operation kill Amaechi’s Legacies’. Just last week, all the Boards and Parasatatals in Rivers State were dissolved in Wike’s bid to reconstitute and fill them with his family members and cronies,” Ikanya said. “To demonstrate his disdain for decency and promotion of nepotism, Wike appointed his immediate cousin, Surveyor Okas Wike of Emma Wike & Partners, as a Director in the reconstituted Greater Port Harcourt Development Authority (GPHDA). Also appointed was his direct in-law, the immediate direct younger brother to Dr. Obuzor, his father in-law, Architect Nnamdi Obuzor, to same board of merely eight members,” the Rivers APC Chairman added.

Wike, according to Ikanya, boasts that Rivers State has been conquered and that nobody can question him or direct him on how to run the State as none of the bigwigs or elders surrounding him contributed a kobo in his election. “Wike has been telling anyone who cares to listen that he must recoup all the funds he spent in his bid to become governor. We wish to remind him that there will be a day of reckoning, even as we demand that he must not treat persons from the riverine and other parts of Rivers State as hewers of wood and drawers of water while lucrative offices are reserved for his family members, relatives and cronies. Whatever his grievances may be, he must not vent his anger on innocent lecturers and the poor masses of Rivers State who are not politicians and have not offended him in any way,” Ikanya said.

The statement challenged Wike’s godfathers to call him to order, asking: “Where is Dr. Peter Odili? Where is Prince Uche Secondus? Where is Dame Patience Jonathan? Where are the elders of Rivers State who brought this shame on our dear State? Is this the type of governor you people want for Rivers State at this critical period of the 21st Century? What crimes have we committed to warrant this type of callous government whose promotion of infamy, impunity and nepotism is unprecedented?”

Rivers APC noted that “if they fail to call Wike to order and he succeeds to run down our State, they are can rest assured that history will never be favourable to them.” It pointed out that “Amaechi is not the one on trial here but you all that by crook installed Wike as governor,” adding: “To dismantle all that Amaechi laboured to achieve for Rivers State these eight years cannot be said to be the best strategy to demonstrate Wike’s evil plot against Rivers people for stating that it is unholy to deny the riverine areas their turn to produce the next Governor of Rivers State after the upland has governed the State for a whopping 16 years.”

The party pleaded with Rivers people, “particularly those that are being hunted and humiliated, to keep hope alive as it is only a matter of weeks before salvation will come their way as we are fasting and praying that the Election Petition Tribunal comes to our aid as soon as possible to save us from the hands of this man who does not know what governance is all about.”

APC is not in crisis

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 16 Second

The All Progressives Congress, APC, Rivers State Chapter has reject the assertion made on a local radio programme in Port Harcourt today by the Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike that the APC is a party in crisis.

The party in a statement signed by its spokesman, Mr Chris Finebone said, rather than respond to the question asked about the accusation that his government was already showing strong signs of nepotism, Chief Wike deliberately deviated from the question and resorted to disparaging the APC, asking it to concentrate on handling the various crises bedeviling it.

The APC states unequivocally state that there is no truth in that assertion by the governor.

“The All Progressives Congress is not in any form of crisis at the local governments, states and federal levels”, the statement declared.

Continuing, the party said, “If the governor’s assertion is based on the recent happenings at the national assembly, we believe those were nothing unusual. For us, it was democracy in action. It is evident already that the process of settling feathers that may have been ruffled over the matter have already been put in motion and that is not strange to party politics all over the world”.

“The APC believes that the good people of Rivers State will get detailed response to the issues the Governor presented at the said radio programme especially where he misrepresented facts and figures for reasons known to him alone”.

Non-indigenes petition Buhari over wike’s sack threat

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 44 Second

….Plead with President to remember Amaechi’s contributions to his victory
Non-indigenes in Rivers State under the aegis of Endangered Non Indigenes Forum in Rivers State (EINFRS) have cried out to President Muhammadu Buhari, pleading with him to come to their rescue, following the threat by Governor Nyesom Wike to crack down on them as part of his determination to deal ruthlessly with associates and loyalties of the immediate past Governor of the State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

The SOS came on the heels of report that the eight-man Committee set up by Chief Wike to compile the names of non-indigenes in the State Civil Service and business outfits belonging to non-indigenes has secretly submitted its report. According to the report, the crackdown will be in phases and will start with the sack of non-indigenous civil servants starting from third week of July,2015.

Based on this sad development, EINFRS has petitioned President Buhari, pleading that he should come to their aid before Chief Wike endangers their lives just because they, in keeping with their pact with Amaechi, actively supported his (Buhari’s) candidature to that of the former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

Part of the petition signed by the Forum’s Secretary General, Dr Ndubuisi Nwakadibia reads: “Mr. President, you have through your sagacity and revolutionary leadership since your inauguration as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces brought peace, tranquility and integration to all Nigerians irrespective of their ethnic and tribal backgrounds. It is sad that unlike other States enjoying peace and democracy Chief Nyesom Wike, the Governor of River State, has made it a policy to torment our people for supporting your candidature instead of that of Dr Jonathan Goodluck, the former President, during the March 28th Presidential election since his inauguration as the Governor of Rivers State. He has embarked upon on an ignoble decimation of APC structures, retrenchment, sack, intimidation, harassment and victimisation of non-indigenes, particularly APC members and supporters resident in Rivers State. Your Excellency, Sir, we are by this petition appealing to you to use your good offices and effervescent nature to call Chief Wike to order, and SAVE US from this unwarranted, unprecedented and provocative onslaught against us for failing to identify with his evil agenda against us and the people of Rivers State. As we told you during our Town Hall Meeting with you at Obi Wali's International Conference Centre, Port Harcourt in March, 2015, we have no other State to go to apart from Rivers State as most of us were born in Rivers State and for Chief Wike to continue to intimidate us in a State we have contributed much to build is not our ideal of democracy.”

EINFRS appealed to President Buhari to remember and adequately appreciate Amaechi’s contributions to his victory. “We wish to appeal to remember all the risks that Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi took to ensure the success we recorded in the Presidential polls and ensure that he is comfortably accommodated in your administration as anything less than this will amount to adding to the pain that we are currently going through in Rivers State,” the group stated.

Read Time:1 Minute, 25 Second

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria presided over by Hon. Justice J.T. Agbadu-Fishim, holden at Yenagoa, Bayelsa State has granted an Order of Interim Injunction against the Governor of Rivers State, the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Attorney-General of Rivers State and their agents from dissolving, suspending, sacking terminating or in any manner whatsoever interfering with the tenure of office of the 23 Local Government Councils of Rivers State.

The Order, in Suit No: NICN/YEN/26/2015, which was granted on Monday, 22nd June, 2015 followed a motion ex-parte and affidavit of extreme urgency filed by the 23 Local Government Council Chairmen on behalf of themselves and the 23 Local Government Councils of Rivers State.

The Order also restrained the Inspector-general of Police or his agents and proxies from enforcing any purported action detrimental to the existence of the 23 Chairmen and Councils in Rivers State.

The Order will remain in force until the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for Interlocutory Injunction.

The APC in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chris Finebone said it would be recalled that the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Hon. Attorney-General of the State have been hatching all manner of schemes to do away with the elected 23 local Government Councils in Rivers State.

The party believes that, despite the presence what it called ‘a few bad eggs’, the judiciary remains the last hope of the oppressed.

“Therefore, we hail this decision by the Yenagoa High Court" the statement concluded.
