February 4 has been fixed as the date for the 1,000-man Walkathon in aid of Prostate Cancer Awareness. The date, which is the World Cancer Day, will see Nigerian men come out en-masse to support the EveryManforHimself initiative, according to a release.

EveryManforHimself is an NGO, which aims to create awareness and conduct research or treatment for Prostate and Testicular Cancer cases in Nigeria. Studies revealed that 83 per cent of Nigerians believed cancer was a disease that affected only females.

The organisation will strive to demystify cancer by getting men to talk about their health more often and to understand that early detection is the key to survival.
Amongst those participating in the walk are Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, Oscar Onyema; CEO of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Tony Elumelu; Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Gbenga Oyebode; Chairman, Access Bank, Ituah Ighodalo; Pastor, Trinity House Church and a host of others.

It is also scheduled to hold on March 28 and will be launched by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola. The walkathon, which will commence at Muri-Okunola Park and proceed to Onikan Stadium (via Ozumba Mbadiwe Way) is the first of a series of awareness programmes aimed at fighting prostate and testicular cancer in Nigerian men.
