Justin Bieber has been cleared in a possible hit-and-run accident involving a paparazzo Monday night.

Bieber is no longer under investigation for the late-night possible hit-and-run in Hollywood, ABC News Los Angeles affiliate KABC-TV confirmed with the Los Angeles Police Department.

The incident happened near the Laugh Factory around 11:45 p.m. Monday, police told KABC.

One person was transported from that location to a local hospital, the Los Angeles City Fire Department told KABC. The person's condition and injuries were unknown.

Bieber, 19, was leaving the Laugh Factory with his friend Lil Twist while several paparazzi photographed the pair, according to TMZ.

As Bieber drove off, one of the photographers was pinned between his Ferrari and a parked car, the website said.

This latest incident comes as Bieber is under fire for speeding through his gated California neighborhood. NFL star Keyshawn Johnson confronted him about that incident, but the Canadian singer has maintained that he was not behind the wheel.

The L.A. County Sheriff's Department has referred the case to the district attorney's office and Bieber faces possible misdemeanor reckless driving charges.

Kanye West wins over critics with ‘daring’ new album ‘Yeezus’

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 54 Second

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Rapper Kanye West pushes the boundaries of hip hop with his latest album "Yeezus," using aggressive electro-dance music beats to channel his anger and win over critics, who have called the record "daring" and "ambitious."

"Yeezus," the 36-year-old rapper's seventh solo studio album, has also sped to the top of the iTunes digital music chart upon its release on Tuesday, led by the single "Black Skinhead."

The album's release coincides with the birth of West and reality star girlfriend Kim Kardashian's first child together, a baby girl born over the weekend.

But on the album the famously ironic and self-referential West avoids mentioning Kardashian and their high-profile romance, which has been heavily tracked by paparazzi and the Kardashian clan's plethora of reality shows on the E! Network.

Instead, he lets his anger out against critics, the public and "haters" on tracks such as "I Am a God," "Send It Up" and "Black Skinhead," a scathing message on modern day racism.

While West rages against the world, critics have been taken aback with the new sounds that West explores, moving away from the traditional hip hop of his earlier albums and fusing electro-dance and synthesizers with thumping beats.

"Yeezus" has so far earned a score of 87 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic.com.

Jon Pareles at the New York Times called the album "an aggressive demand for attention" while Rolling Stone's Jon Dolan said, "'Yeezus' is the darkest, most extreme music Kanye has ever cooked up, an abrasive album."

USA Today's Steve Jones called the album "daring and infectious," while the New Yorker's Sasha Frere-Jones labeled it "ambitious" and West's "most satisfyingly narcissistic record."

"Yeezus" features collaborations with French DJ duo Daft Punk – who provide beats on four songs, including "I Am God" and "Black Skinhead" – folk singer Justin Vernon from Bon Iver on "Hold My Liquor," and rappers Chief Keef, Kid Cudi and King L.

Billboard magazine, which compiles the weekly U.S. music charts based on Nielsen SoundScan sales figures, projected that "Yeezus" could sell 500,000 copies in its first week, making it one of 2013's big debuts along with Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience."

Timberlake has so far led the pack as "The 20/20 Experience," his first album since 2006, set a year high with 968,000 copies sold in its first week.

Rapper Jay-Z, who West collaborated with on 2011's chart-topping record "Watch The Throne," announced this week that his new album will be released on July 4, while his pop star wife Beyonce also has a new album in the works for this year.

New albums from pop singers Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Katy Perry are also expected to be released in the second half of 2013.

"Yeezus" is released by Universal Music Group's Def Jam label. Universal is subsidiary of France's Vivendi SA.

Google Settles Suit, Clears Way for Stock Split

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 27 Second

Google has resolved a shareholder lawsuit blocking a long-delayed stock split, clearing the way for the Internet search leader to issue a new class of non-voting shares later this year.

The settlement announced Monday came on the eve of a scheduled Delaware chancery court trial that threatened to cast an unflattering light on Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

The class-action by the Brockton Retirement Board in Massachusetts and another Google shareholder, Philip Skidmore, alleged that Page and Brin engineered the stock split in a way that unfairly benefits them while shortchanging the rest of the company’s shareholders.

Google denied the allegations and maintained that the proposed stock split announced 14 months ago would benefit shareholders by ensuring that Page and Brin would preserve the power that has enabled them to make the same kinds of bold bets on technology that has helped increase the company’s market value by more than $260 billion during the past nine years.

The split calls for a new class of “C” stock with no voting power to be issued for each share of an existing category of “A” voting stock. The structure is designed to ensure that Page and Brin retain control over the company, even though they only currently own about 15 percent of Google’s outstanding stock, combined.

Page, Google’s CEO, and Brin, an executive who oversees special projects in the company’s secret X Lab, hold 56 percent of Google’s voting power through a “B” class of stock that gives them 10 votes per share. By creating a new class of non-voting shares, Google will be able to keep rewarding other employees with more stock and financing potential acquisitions of stock without undermining the voting power of Page and Brin.

The co-founders began pushing for the stock split three years ago, according to court and regulatory documents. Google shareholders approved the split a year ago, but the lawsuit had prevented the company from issuing the new shares.

The settlement still requires final court approval after shareholders have an opportunity to file any further objections. That means it will be at least several more weeks before the split can occur.

The legal truce will require Google Inc. to compensate owners of the new class of if stock if it’s worth less than the existing class of stock after one year of trading. If the Class C stock is one percent to five percent below the price of the Class A shares, investors will receive a fraction of the difference in cash or additional Google stock. The maximum payments will be made if Class C stock lags the Class A price by five percent or more.

Google’s Class A shares rose $11.21 Monday to close at $886.25. Based on that price, the Class C stock would have to be trading at $841.94 or lower to receive the maximum payment outlined in the settlement. In this scenario, the Class C stockholders would receive $44.31 per share.

If the split takes place, the trading price of Google’s stock will probably fall dramatically to reflect a nearly doubling in outstanding shares. Google is expected to issue more than 271 million C shares, based on how many Class A shares were outstanding as of April 18.

Google, which is based in Mountain View, Calif., is betting there won’t be a substantial gap between the trading prices of the Class A and Class C shares because investors backing the company have always known Page and Brin had the power to trump all other shareholders. That arrangement seems to have worked out well, given that Google’s A shares have risen 10-fold from their initial public offering price of $85.

Another provision of the settlement requires Google’s board to do a special review assessing how Class A shareholders will be affected if a future company acquisition is financed with more than 10 million shares of Class C stock.

NASA Picks 8 New Astronauts, 4 of Them Women

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 46 Second

(CAPE CANAVERAL) — NASA has eight new astronauts — its first new batch in four years.

Among the lucky candidates: the first female fighter pilot to become an astronaut in nearly two decades. A female helicopter pilot also is in the group. In fact, four of the eight are women, the highest percentage of female astronaut candidates ever selected by NASA.

Monday’s announcement came on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the launch of the first American woman in space, Sally Ride. She died last summer.

The eight — all in their 30s — were chosen from more than 6,000 applications received early last year, the second largest number ever received. They will report for duty in August at Johnson Space Center in Houston and join 49 astronauts currently at NASA. The number has dwindled ever since the space shuttles stopped flying in 2011. Many astronauts quit rather than get in a lengthy line for relatively few slots for long-term missions aboard the International Space Station.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said these new candidates will help lead the first human mission to an asteroid in the 2020s, and then Mars, sometime in the following decade. They also may be among the first to fly to the space station aboard commercial spacecraft launched from the U.S., he noted. Russia ferries the astronauts now.

“These new space explorers asked to join NASA because they know we’re doing big, bold things here — developing missions to go farther into space than ever before,” Bolden said in a statement.

The Class of 2013′s Nicole Aunapu Mann, a major in the Marines, is an F/A 18 pilot serving at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Patuxent River, Md. Army Maj. Anne McClain is a helicopter pilot. The two other women, Christina Hammock and Jessica Meir, are scientists.

All four men have military backgrounds, including one who is a former emergency room physician, Dr. Andrew Morgan. The others are Josh Cassada, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Victor Glover and Air Force Lt. Col. Tyler (Nick) Hague.

(CNN) – John Morton, the director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, will leave his post at the end of July to take a position at a private company, ICE's office of public affairs said Monday.

Appointed by President Barack Obama in May 2009, he is the third and longest serving director in the agency's history, according to ICE.

In a note to employees, Morton thanked them for their hard work. The agency removed more than 400,000 individuals last year.

In February, ICE came under fire for releasing several hundred detainees to "less costly" forms of supervision in February ahead of pending budget cuts.

Read Time:55 Second

Barcelona’s Argentina forward Lionel Messi and his father have been accused by Spanish tax authorities of defrauding the state of more than 4 million euros ($5.3 million).

The World Player of the Year and his father Jorge allegedly filed fraudulent tax returns for the years 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, according to a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office for tax crimes in Catalonia, an allegation the Barcelona star denied.

A Barca spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Messi, who will be 26 this month, is one of the world’s highest-paid athletes with a salary of just over $20 million a season, according to Forbes magazine.

On top of his Barca wages, he pulls in around $21 million in endorsements from sponsors including Adidas, PepsiCo and P&G and he is 10th on Forbes’ latest list of top-earning athletes.

Messi came on for the final half-hour of Argentina’s World Cup 2014 qualifier against Ecuador in Quito on Tuesday which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Michael Jackson’s Daughter Taken To Hospital

Read Time:1 Minute, 12 Second

Michael Jackson's 15-year-old daughter Paris has been taken to hospital in Los Angeles, according to reports.

The local fire department said they responded to a call of a possible overdose at 1.27am local time.

They say they transported a single person to a local medical centre.

There are several reports the person involved was Paris.

She is said to have been taken from the Jackson family home in Calabasas, California, on a stretcher and transported to hospital in an ambulance.

A statement on behalf of her mother, Debbie Rowe, said: "We appreciate everyone's thoughts for Paris at this time and their respect for the family's privacy."

The last message posted on Paris' official Twitter account was 12 hours ago.

It read: "Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as though they're here to stay."

Paris is the only daughter of the late Michael, who died in 2009 aged 50.

In an interview in April, she spoke of her "incredible father" and defended her upbringing.

She said the King of Pop battled to give his children a "normal childhood"

"I have lots of memories of my father. He was an incredible father. We all loved him to death."

Paris and her siblings live with their grandmother Katherine following Jackson's sudden death.

Envoy Lists Gains of Nigeria-Canadian Ties

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 30 Second

Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Chris Cooter, Wednesday lauded the close ties between his country and Nigeria that have led to shared benefits between the two nations.

Cooter, who spoke during a courtesy visit to THISDAY corporate head office in Lagos, said the cooperation between  the two countries was felt more in  the  education sector.

He explained that thousands of Nigerian students were studying in Canada, while Canada-trained teachers are working in 30 out of the 36 states in Nigeria.

In terms of technological assistance, the envoy pointed out that employees of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) were currently in Canada for training to enhance their efficiency.

Besides, the Canadian High Commission has been partnering the federal government to bring investors to the country.

While acknowledging Canada’s involvement in Nigeria’s power sector, he pointed out that Nigerian farmers were in Canada to get agricultural tools for modern and mechanised farming.

Culturally, the envoy stated that through Canada’s growth in the movies industry, with its recent globally-acclaimed film festival, Nigerian artistes were also being helped in post production of its local films.

He said through Nigeria-Canada Bi-national Commission, Canada was able to fund young entrepreneurs in relevant sectors of the economy.

He added that the country had also been involved in human rights, peace projects in Jos, Plateau State and electoral process with its $6 million donation to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2011.

On Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria, the envoy said fighting terrorism had always been a herculean task, adding that it has been difficult to tame terrorism not only in Nigeria, but globally.

He , however, said Canada would assist the federal government in any way it could to end insurgency in Nigeria.
