Starting off 2015 with a bang! Michael Sam is engaged to his boyfriend Vito Cammisano, a source tells Us Weekly.
Sam, 25, came out as gay in February 2014, making him the first openly gay NFL player in history. The All-American defensive lineman from the University of Missouri was first drafted by the St. Louis Rams in August, but was later released. He then joined the Dallas Cowboys but was again cut in October.
Last year proved to be bittersweet for Sam, ending on a high note when he was named Man of the Year by GQ magazine in December. The future spouses were photographed kissing at the star-studded event in celebration.
In July, Sam opened up about how the two met through mutual friends during college. After a brief interaction (they weren't fond of each other), they crossed paths again two years later and fell in love. "Everyone knew Vito was gay, so we couldn't even be seen together. There was a lot of climbing out of windows," he said of hiding his sexuality to Out magazine. "Vito was really the person who showed me I had to do it. I wanted us to be comfortable."
The New York Post was the first to break the engagement news.
