More snow will fall Tuesday in the northern Rockies, northern Plains and Upper Midwest. The heaviest snow will fall in the high elevations of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. Lake effect-snow will also whiten areas downwind of the Great Lakes and in the northern Appalachians.
Temperatures will remain frigid across the northern tier of the nation, with highs only in the teens and 20s, while seasonably mild weather will be the rule for most of the Southern U.S.
A few scattered showers are possible in central and southern Florida as a cold front sags across the state.
Weather history for Dec. 24: In 1924, the temperature dropped an incredible 84 degrees in 12 hours (from 63 degrees to -21 degrees) in Fairfield, Mont. In 1966, a Christmas Eve snowstorm dumped over a foot of snow in Philadelphia.
In 1994, a powerful rain and wind storm lashed New England, as winds roared to 99 mph in Massachusetts.
