ObamaAs expected, President Obama is rejecting a new House Republican plan to raise the debt ceiling and end the government shutdown.

Obama and the White House are more supportive of a plan being developed in the Democratic-run Senate.

The House GOP plan would go further in scaling back Obama's new health care plan; it would would suspend a tax on medical devices for two years, and eliminate health care subsidies for the president, vice president, his Cabinet and members of Congress.

NEWS: House GOP to move own bill on debt and shutdown

Meanwhile, Obama has scheduled a 3:15 p.m. meeting with members of the House Democratic leadership.

The statement from White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage:

"The President has said repeatedly that Members of Congress don't get to demand ransom for fulfilling their basic responsibilities to pass a budget and pay the nation's bills.

"Unfortunately, the latest proposal from House Republicans does just that in a partisan attempt to appease a small group of Tea Party Republicans who forced the government shutdown in the first place.

"Democrats and Republicans in the Senate have been working in a bipartisan, good-faith effort to end the manufactured crises that have already harmed American families and business owners.

"With only a couple days remaining until the United States exhausts its borrowing authority, it's time for the House to do the same."
