Nigeria and Austria have concluded plans to strengthen the volume of trade between them, following indications that the over €55 million yearly income made from the importation of African lace material from the European nation could double over the next few years.

This disclosure was made yesterday by the curators of Museum of Ethnology Vienna, Barbara Plankensteiner and Nath Mayo Adediran at an African lace exhibition press conference in Vienna, Austria.

For the first time, an exhibition and research explored the history and cultural significance of this particular fabric in Nigeria.

The exhibition, which had in attendance some of Nigeria’s top fashion designers like Frank Osodi, Mekwuye Godwin (Vivid Imagination), Ituen Basi and Folake Folarin-Coker for Tiffany Amber was organised by the Musiem of Ethnology Vienna in cooperation with the National Commission for Museums and Monument of Nigeria.

The theme of the exhibition enhances a contemporary aspect of culture that extends beyond the borders of a single nation, interconnecting people, ideas and creativity through trade.

It presents a recent development in the Nigerian fashion history but also boosts a recent chapter of trade history between Europe and Africa, especially between Austria and Nigeria.
