A suit has been filed before the Federal Territory High Court in Abuja by two members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to stop alleged plots to force the party’s Chairman Adamu Mu’azu to resign.

Several members and leaders of the PDP have in the past weeks called for the resignation of Mu’azu and other members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to quit their position. They have been accused to working against the party in the 2015 general elections.

The plaintiff, Tasiu Iliyasu Hussaini and Waziri Amadu, ask the court to restrain the party from dissolving the NWC or forcing the resignation of its members without recourse to what the party’s constitution stipulates.

A supporting affidavit in the deposition reads in part, “These calls for the dissolution and resignation are against the provisions of our constitution and our collective resolve as members of the 1st defendant (PDP),”

“It is in the interest of all the parties to this action that the constitution of the 1st defendants obeyed to the letter.

“It will be in the interest of justice to grant the reliefs sought in this suit and prevent any violation of the clear and unambiguous provisions of our constitution.”

The defendants in the suit dated May 14, 2015, are the PDP and Mua’zu and other members of the NWC.

And upon sighting the force, the vandals reportedly engaged them in a gun battle.

An unconfirmed report said three policemen and nine vandals were killed in the clash, but a senior police officer who anonymously confirmed the incident to Vanguard was reluctant to comment on the casualty figure.

“I cannot tell whether anyone died. If any life was lost, the proof will be the dead body,” he said.

NIGERIA: Prostitutes beat up pastor in Calabar

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 21 Second

It was a show of shame when a supposed man of God in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, was beaten to a pulp by some prostitutes because he went after another woman apart from his regular customer.

According to an eyewitness who sent the report to Pulse, the man identified as Pastor Effiong, had been secretly patronising the ladies of the night at a popular brothel located around the Watt area and had one of them as his regular customer.

The witness who was at the scene when the fracas happened, said:

"Trouble brewed for him when he went to the hotel with his bible on the pretext of preaching as he always does. But unfortunately for him, his regular woman was engaged with another man and instead of waiting for her, he went to another lady's room and was busy enjoying himself when his regular woman came out and was told that the pastor had gone to another woman.

I never knew that prostitutes could be jealous o. The lady went to her colleagues room and banged on the door, accusing the woman of snatching her man.

The one inside was not happy with the accusation and opened her door in anger and engaged the first one in a fight. Other prostitutes of hearing what happened, grouped and descended on the Pastor and beat him blue black.

It took the intervention of other patrons of the hotel to get him out of the clutches of the women who were busy insulting him, calling him unprintable names.

It was a show of shame indeed."

Benin Republic: Energy minister resigns over $4.5m fraud allegation

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 8 Second

The Minister for energy in Benin Republic, Barthelemy Kassa, has resigned over allegations of massive fraud in drinking water projects.

The government of Benin confirmed the Minister’s resignation on Wednesday, May 13.

Last week, the deputy development minister of Netherlands, Liliane Ploume, suspended the “developmental relations” with Benin after an audit into aid spending showed misappropriation of funds.

According to the review, $4.5 million was missing from the country’s coffers.

The Netherlands however stopped bilateral aid, noting it will not continue until the issue of the missing four million euros is tackled.

“The minister for energy and water resigned on (Tuesday) May 12,” the government’s general-secretary Alassani Tigri told AFP.

The country’s presidency has said investigations will be carried out to uncover the misappropriation of funds allegation.

“With a view to allowing the international audit to take place without any influence on his part, (Kassa) decided to submit his resignation to the president, who accepted it”, a statement said.

“All staff of the (drinking water) project and some senior managers of the ministry have been made available to economic and financial investigators,” it added.

Benin’s largest donor for water development projects is the Netherlands, having donated an estimated 50 million euros to the impoverished country.

Ex-President rejects PDP’s plea to help rebuild party

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 36 Second

It has emerged that some People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leaders have repeatedly begged the former president Olusegun Obasanjo to help salvage the party, which the Senate President, David mark described as ‘dying.’

According to Premium Times, Obasanjo refused the party’s plea for him to return and help rebuild it ahead of future elections.

In February 2015, the former president publicly renounced his PDP membership at a forum in Abeokuta, Ogun state and directed that his membership card be torn right at the meeting.

Report says those mounting pressure on Obasanjo to return to the party include serving governors and lawmakers. They are said to be making the pleas through visits and via the telephone.

Sources close Obasanjo reportedly overhead him recently telling one of the PDP chieftains on the telephone that party politics is over for him.

“I’m done with party politics here on earth and in heaven. Period,” the former PDP Board of trustees member was quoted to have said.

Speaking in a telephone interview with Premium Times, Obasanjo confirmed that he has been pressured to return to the PDP, stating he will never.

He said, “I’m not ready to discuss partisan politics because I’m done with it. I agree that Nigeria needs a strong and viable opposition and I will continue to encourage that. I will continue to do that even without belonging to a political party. I have moved beyond party politics.”

Following the March 28 presidential election where President Goodluck Jonathan lost to rtd. General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, the PDP has suffered internal crisis.

In the past weeks, PDP leadership has been shaky, with some of its members demanding the party’s National Chairman Adamu Mua’zu and other executive members to resign. They were accused of working against the party during the elections.

Fuel Scarcity: ‘Nigerians should blame FG,’ marketer says

0 0
Read Time:55 Second

Oil marketers in Nigeria have said that citizens of the country should blame the Federal Government for the fuel scarcity currently being experienced in the country.

The marketers said further that the petrol shortage was unending because the FG had refused to pay the remaining subsidy debt it owed.

“Nigerians should blame the Federal Government for the fuel scarcity currently witnessed across the country,” one marketer told Vanguard on Tuesday, May 12, 2015.

“Marketers have shown commitment towards ending the scarcity but the Federal Government has not been serious about abiding with certain agreements reached during some of our meetings,” he added.

“The fact that most oil marketers have stopped fuel importation into the country at the moment was because they do not have money to finance the import and this is because the Federal Government has refused to pay us the money they owe us,” the marketer said.

The scarcity has been ongoing for weeks and even the fuel that has been made available is being sold at much higher prices than the approved N87 per litre.

NIGERIA: Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s son not arrested for money laundering

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola has denied reports that one of his sons has been arrested for money laundering.

The governor made the denial in response to rumours that his son, Kabir had been arrested on Tuesday, May 12, at the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos.

The clarification was made by Aregbesola on Wednesday, May 13, via a statement released by his media aide, Semiu Okanlawon.

The statement reads:

“It has become pertinent to inform Nigerians and others generally that there is no iota of truth in the story being peddled around by some misguided elements claiming that a son of Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun, Kabir Aregbesola was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos today Tuesday May 12, 2015 with a huge sum of money in foreign currencies”.

“We have discovered the the authors of the wicked and malicious lie are doggedly pursuing their agenda by engaging in an aggressive push for the falsehood to reach a larger population especially using the social media.”

“The younger Aregbesola neither traveled anywhere nor had any encounter with any security personnel today. It is obvious the evil minds at work are out to drag an innocent young man’s name into this dirt in order to get at his father.”

“Obviously, part of the game plans of those behind this orchestrated lie is to whip up sentiments especially among the workers in Osun whose salaries are being delayed as part of the fallout of the national revenue crisis and demonise the governor.”

“Aregbesola has maintained a life of a moderate family man with a set of highly disciplined children who cannot be found wanting on issues of morals and societal values.”

The governor also dismissed the rumour as the “handiwork of mischievous minds.
