The Pot And The Kettle: Husband, wife, exchange hot words in court

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 58 Second

It was a show of shame as 55-year-old man, Asimiyu Oladele, and his 48-year-old wife, Kudirat, threw caution to the wind and engaged each other in a war of words at a Grade ‘C’ Customary Court sitting at Inalende, in Ibadan North-West local government area of Oyo State, where they had gone to seek a divorce to their 15-year-old marriage which has produced two teenage children.

While Oladele accused his wife of serial adultery and lack of care and attempted murder, Kudirat accused her husband of being irresponsible, a tout and a lay about.

First to fire the salvo was Oladele and he said:

"I want to divorce her because she is adulterous. She fornicates to an extent that I caught her red-handed with her man-friend in our matrimonial home. They locked the entrance door that day, but I managed to see them through the window.

She also attempted to kill me by sending thugs to me when she could not cope with my silence over her behaviour. But her plan was averted because those guys she sent know me and they came to me to ask why my wife wanted to kill me, to which I took time to explain to them."

But his wife Kudirat would not be caught lying low as she told the court that she was also fed up of her husband and urged the court to divorce them

"I did not commit adultery, the person he met in the house with me was my alfa, and we were sitting down on the chair watching television, not in the bedroom. And it was his first time of coming back home after a year he has abandoned me and the children.

My husband is an irresponsible man, he doesn’t take care of me and the children. He is a tout. He has destroyed most the 'goods in my market.'

My Lord, since he is tired of me, I’m also ready to part ways with him. Please, separate us."

The president of the court, Ramon Olafenwa, had no option but to grant the warring parties their wishes:

"Having observed that there is no more love between the couple, the court hereby dissolves the 15-year-old marriage."

NWTF: Group urges Buhari to appoint women in key positions

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 11 Second

The Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF), Ayisha Osori, has urged the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to appoint women in positions of decision making.

While speaking to NAN in Abuja on Wednesday, May 20, Osori said that it is also necessary for the incoming administration to adopt inclusive representation.

According to her, this is imperative as the performance of women at the general elections is poor.

She observed that the advocacy for change was required of the middle class in order to bring about revolution in the society

She said, "I am in two minds about this grassroot advocacy issue, because for me, all around the world it is the middle class that leads revolutions.

"It is the middle class that drives change; you do not expect the masses who are burgled down with many issues: poverty, looking for food, looking for water, health issues to actually care.

"It is the middle class that is going to drive change because for me, grassroot people have proven over and over again that what they care about is food.

"And if a man comes and provides it great, if a woman comes and provide it, I also think for them it’s great, the change we want to see in terms of inclusive representation is going to come from middle class, it is not going to come from grassroot.’’

In Abuja: Court nullifies PDP Rep-elect’s election for certificate forgery

Read Time:1 Minute, 6 Second

An Abuja Federal High Court has overturned the election of a Benue Rep-elect, Christian Abah, after it was found that he forged a Diploma of the Polythecnic, Mubi.

The presiding judge, Justice Adeniyi Ademola, held that the allegation of certificate forgery against Abah by the plaintiff Hassan Saleh, was true having been established by an election tribunal in 2011.

He also said that the certificate Abbah presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was confirmed forged in a letter by the Registrar of the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, Suleiman Buba.

The judge however declared Saleh as winner of the election having invalidated Abah's candidacy.

He ordered INEC to issue a fresh certificate of return to Saleh, who had aspired for the position in the primary election before the PDP declared Abah unopposed.

The court also ordered the incoming Speaker of the ‎8th National Assembly to swear in Saleh as the member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal ‎Constituency.

Ademola also ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, to immediately commence prosecution of Abah for the crimes of forgery and perjury.

Saleh had challenged Abah’s eligibility to stand for the election on the ground that he forged an Ordinary National Diploma in Accountancy purportedly obtained from the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, in 1985.

DIA: Military says banking system frustrates effort to track Boko Haram funding

0 0
Read Time:45 Second

The Chief of Defence Intelligence of the Nigerian Army, Rear Admiral Gabriel Okoi has said that banking system frustrates its effort to tracking the sources of funding of the terror group Boko Haram.

While speaking to journalists shortly after the closing ceremony of the Deputy Defence Advisers/Attaches and Librarian training conference in Abuja on Wednesday, May 20, Okoi said the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) is taking steps to track the sources of the terrorists’ funds anyway.

On the funding sources, he said; “We are doing something about it. It is just because of the system we have in Nigeria and the banking system does not allow you to really go into much of those things.

“They have been empowered now; we have given them all they need, we told them how they should go about intelligence gathering, so we expect positive results from them.”

NIGERIA: Police deny locking up House of Assembly

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second

The Enugu State Police Command has said it does not have the keys to the state House of Assemble, following a Federal High Court threat to jail the Inspector General of Police if he fails to order the opening of the state House.

The state House of Assembly has been locked since 14 lawmakers moved to impeach Governor Sullivan Chime on May 3.

This development birthed a crisis as about seven lawmakers against the impeachment plots, ‘removed’ the Speaker, Eugene Odoh, and elected Chinedu Nwamba as replacement.

Odoh and Nwamba are both claiming to the office of the Speaker, but none of the has held plenary in the House due to the lockdown.

However, in an ex parte application by Odoh, an Enugu Federal High Court ordered the police to reopen the Assembly to enable the lawmakers to gain access to the chambers in order to carry out their duties.

One week after the court gave the order, the House of Assembly is still locked up and a team of riot policemen are said to be stationed at the entrance gate of the House.

This necessitated the court to threaten to commit the Police IG, Solomon Arase, to jail for contempt of court.

Arase is also a defendant in the suit filed by the Speaker.

The State Police Command spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu, has however said that the police is not in possession of the keys of the padlocks used to lock the complex.

NIGERIA: Why Boko Haram recaptured Marte, military explains

0 0
Read Time:42 Second

Following the recapture of Marte in Borno state by terrorist group, Boko Haram on Friday, May 16, the Nigerian military has assured Nigerians that  there is no cause for alarm.

In a statement by the Defence Headquarters, posted on Facebook on Saturday, May 16, the Army said the insurgents ran to Marte because their hideouts in Sambisa Forest and environs have been raided by the ongoing military onslaught, admitting that there is less military presence in Marte because the town has been deserted by residents.

It said most of the inhabitants of the town are either in one Internally Displaced Persons camp or the other.

The force stressed that it will deploy men to Marte, now that is known that terrorists are escaping there, while reinforcing that the terrorists will have no breathing space anywhere they are hiding.
