NIGERIA: ‘Osinbajo is misleading Nigerians,’ PDP says

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 35 Second

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Vice President-elect, Yemi Osinbajo of misleading Nigerians as regards the country’s debt profile.

Osinbajo had said on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, that President Goodluck Jonathan is leaving behind a debt profile of $60 billion for the incoming administration of President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh however criticized Osinbajo for not revealing that most of the debt was incurred by APC-run states.

Metuh made the comments via a statement released on Monday, May 25, 2015.

It reads:

"It is indeed unfortunate that the Vice President-elect who has the details of the debt stock chose to be economical with the truth and to mislead Nigerians just to discredit the current PDP-led administration and rationalize APC’s unpreparedness for governance.”

“Prof. Osinbajo is aware that the $63.7 billion is made up of external and domestic debts belonging not only to the Federal Government but to federal and state governments and accumulating since the 1960s, yet he deliberately misrepresented the facts to give the unsuspecting public the impression that the amount was exclusively incurred by the current Federal Government.”

“Perhaps the Vice President-elect avoided the details so as not to expose the fact that the APC controlled Lagos state has both the highest external debt stock of $1,169, billion as well as the highest domestic debt stock of N278, 867 billion.”

“Furthermore we find it unacceptable and unstatesmanly for the Vice President-elect to attempt to mislead Nigerians into believing that the total federal debt component was accumulated under the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration, when it is on record that a greater chunk of the amount was inherited.”

Metuh also urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop making excuses and deliver on its campaign promises to citizens of the country.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has chosen former Defence Minister, Haliru Bello Mohammed as its acting Chairman.

Mohammed was appointed on Monday, May 25, 2015 at the BoT meeting in Abuja.

The appointment was announced by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, at the end of the meeting.

Ekweremadu explained that Mohammed was the only nominee for the position and would act as BoT Chairman until a permanent appointment is made.

He also said that the party would soon arrange for a meeting where a new National Chairman and a substantive BoT Chairman would be appointed.

Former National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu resigned on May 20, 2015, and former BoT Chairman, Tony Anenih followed suit.

Mu’azu resigned after pressure mounted on him to vacate the office following the PDP’s defeat in the recently concluded elections.

Anenih said that he had resigned in order to let President Goodluck Jonathan occupy the position of BoT Chairman.

NIGERIA: ‘Jonathan has mismanaged Nigeria,’ Ex-President says

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 4 Second

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has again criticized incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan saying that he has mismanaged Nigeria.

Obasanjo made the remark on Sunday, May 24, 2015, during a meeting with delegation of South-West women leaders who paid him a courtesy visit in his Abeokuta, Ogun State home.

“The country had been poorly managed in the last eight years and it would take some time for Buhari’s government to correct the anomalies. But I want to tell him not to be frightened,” the former President said.

“What I would say is that we should all put our minds at rest. He (Buhari) is someone that will perform but we must exercise patience because what has been destroyed for eight years cannot be undone overnight,” he added.

“But like the Chinese proverb which says the journey of a thousand miles starts with a step, it is not only the first step (that matters) but the first step in the right direction because if you take a wrong step, you’re not likely to get to the destination,” Obasanjo said.

The former leader has been openly critical of Jonathan in recent times and earlier compared the President’s regime to that of former dictator, Sani Abacha.

Read Time:45 Second

According to the Chairman of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), Obafemi Olawore, Conoil, Forte Oil, MRS, Total and Mobil have agreed to begin lifting and distributing product to end the scarcity.

Amaechi’s stewardship second to none – Rivers APC

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 25 Second

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has described the eight-year stewardship of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi as unequalled since the creation of the State in 1967, declaring that he will leave office in a blaze of glory when his tenure ends on May 29, 2015.

“Governor Amaechi has set new standards in governance, not only in Rivers State but, indeed, nationally. History will record him as not only the best Governor Rivers State has ever produced since its creation but also as one of the best in the country,” Rivers APC said in a statement issued on Tuesday in the State capital, Port Harcourt.

The party in the statement signed by its State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, said it came to the conclusion after a detailed study of Amaechi’s performance in office and comparing it with that of his predecessors, as well as his brother-governors across the country. It thanked Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and eminent jurist, Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte, for acknowledging Amaechi’s feats during their remarks at the recent public presentation of the compilation of the achievements of the Amaechi administration at Lagos recently by Dr Yemi Ogunbiyi and Dr Chidi Amuta in their book. ‘Dynamics of Change: The Amaechi Years’.

The party said: “Prof. Soyinka did not only describe Amaechi as the arrowhead of the change that led to the change in the country, a man of principle and strong conviction, who was willing to stand by his belief at a great risk, but also praised the giant strides made by the Amaechi administration. Asiwaju Tinubu affirmed that Amaechi has charted the critical path to total political and economic emancipation of the people of Rivers State, leaving a legacy of high quality schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, security and human capacity projects, among others. On his part, Justice Karibi-Whyte stressed that Governor Amaechi was key in bringing all the ethnic nationalities in Rivers State struggling for leadership together and fostering peace in the State.”

Rivers APC said that Amaechi’s ability to achieve so much despite unceasing efforts by the extremely hostile Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government and some misguided Rivers State politicians testifies to the Governor’s uncanny gift in crisis management. It assured Nigerians that Amaechi will take the magic wand to the centre under the incoming APC-led Federal Government. “We are confident that Governor Amaechi will continue to remain a worthy Ambassador of Rivers State and will set new standards in whatever position our great party and our leader, President-elect Muhammadu Buhari may wish to use him in the new dispensation,” Rivers APC said

RIVERS APC RAISES ALARM OVER PDP’S PLOT TO VIOLENTLY DISRUPT MAY 23 COUNCIL POLLS •Unveils list of candidates

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 29 Second

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has been accused of plotting to use violent means to disrupt the Local Government Council polls scheduled to hold throughout the State on Saturday, May 23, 2015. The State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) raised the alarm via a statement issued Thursday morning in Port Harcourt by its State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.

“We have it on good authority that, having failed in its efforts to stop the polls, including the ill-advised boycott of this democratic exercise which has been eagerly embraced by 22 other political parties in the State, the leadership of the State PDP has concluded plans to unleash mayhem on the State prior to and on Saturday, May 23, with a view to violently disrupting the council polls. The idea behind the sinister plot is to discredit the polls and lay the blame on APC, portraying the party as the one behind the insecurity in the State. It is also aimed to discredit Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for going ahead with the constitutionally-approved Local Government elections which the State PDP is desperate to sabotage after chickening out to avoid being disgraced by voters,” Dr. Ikanya said.

He disclosed that PDP political thugs imported by PDP leaders have already started arriving the State for the unholy assignment. “As part of this satanic plot, an assassination attempt was carried out on May 19 against Victor Briggs, an aide to Governor Amaechi, with his Police Escort killed in the process. It is very unfortunate that Rivers PDP should be orchestrating more violence in the State after masterminding the death of over 100 APC supporters in the run-up to, and during the ill-fated elections of March 28 and April 11,” Ikanya said.

The Rivers APC Chairman cried out to the law enforcement agencies for help, saying: “We wish to once again call on the Police and other security agencies to be proactive this time and prevent the State PDP leadership from carrying out this unprovoked attack against APC members. They should act promptly to forestall another orgy of violence by those who have been threatening to cause mayhem in the Niger Delta region due to the ouster of President Goodluck Jonathan from office. This premeditated violence if not nipped in the bud could further lead to a crisis that may negatively affect the transition programme in the State.”

Dr. Ikanya however vowed that no amount of intimidation and evil machinations of PDP will stop the Saturday polls as the party lacks the constitutional right to prevent an exercise designed to promote democracy at the grassroots level and eagerly accepted by the majority of people of the State.

The APC State Chairman unveiled the official list of the 22 Chairmanship candidates that will fly the flag of APC during the poll as follows:

HON. AUGUSTINE P. NGO for ABUA/ODUAL

MR. SULE ATAGO for AHOADA EAST

SAMUEL EYIBA for AHOADA WEST

BENIBO STANLEY for AKUKU-TORU

IMIE BENSON for ANDONI

FRED VINCENT FRED-HORSFALL for ASARI TORU

OMUSO G. ABBEY for BONNY

ELI SOGBEYE C. for DEGEMA

HON. FINEMAN OLUNGWE for ELEME

WORLU LUCKY C. for EMOHUA

BARR REGINALD UKWUOMA for ETCHE

BADOM DONATUS for GOKANA

CELESTINE AKPOBARI for KHANA

NNANTA GABRIEL WELI for OBIO/AKPOR

OLUO ANTHONY CHIDI for OMUMA

NATHANIEL IRINGERI for OGU/BOLO

JAJA LOVEDAY MICHAEL for OPOBO/NKORO

CHIEF KINGSLEY A. NWOGU for OYIGBO

HON. BESTMAN AMADI O.A for IKWERRE

CHIMBIKO ICHE AKAROLO for PHALGA

BARIZASI-JANE FELICIA NYAAGBO for TAI

Dr Ikanya counseled the successful candidates that are to fly the flag of the party in this poll to run issue based and violence free campaigns as the party will not condone any act of violence in any form, “We have never been associated with violence and we will never be associated with it no matter the level of provocation or temptation from our opponents” the Chairman stated

PENGASSAN strike cripples electricity supply: ‘It may get worse’ – Power Ministry

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 13 Second

Government said the ongoing strike by Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas has further worsened the power supply situation.

The Federal Government has alarmed over the epileptic electricity supply across the country.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Godknows Igali, made this known in Abuja on Friday, May 22, after a meeting with Vice-President Namadi Sambo to State House correspondents.

The perm sec. and the Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, had briefed Sambo on the state of power generation, transmission and distribution in the country.

He said the ongoing strike by Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas has further worsened the power supply situation.

The workers are protesting the transfer of the operatorship of the Oil Mining Lease (OML) 42 to two indigenous companies, claiming the move will affect the fortunes of NPDC and its staff.

“With the strike which has gone on for one or two days there is dramatic turn as of this afternoon we have gone down for the all time low to 1,327 megawatts.

“So, if you look at it from 4,800 there is dramatic turn, the loss is terrible,’’ Igali said.

He said as at 12 noon today, May 22, 2015, Utorogu, CHEVRON ORE DO, OB EN gas plants were all shutdown while UGHELI and CNL ESCRAVOS were already isolated.

He said, “on the eastern axis Shell Gas, ALAKIRI has also been shutdown. This has led to the several power plants being stranded and shutdown.

“This includes EGBIN, OLORUNSHOGO I & 11, OMOTOSHO 1& 11, GEREGU I & 11, IHONVOR and SAPELE (NIPP) on the western axis and ALAOJI on the eastern end.’’

According to him, besides, pipeline vandalism which has continued to have very negative impact on the power supply situation in the country, the ongoing strike by the labour unions in the oil and gas sector has added additional toll.

“The overall effect is that power supply which had started picking up steadily since the beginning of the week, following repairs of various vandalised portions of the ELP Line and the Trans-Forcados Gas Pipelines, has fallen to all-time-unprecedented low of 1,327m was at 1.00 p.m. May22, 2015."

He, therefore, warned that “situation could get worse if the strike continues.’’

Igali expressed the hope that the ongoing discussion between the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and, the labour unions, would end amicably.

NIGERIA: Buhari snubbed petroleum minister Deziani Allison-Madueke on British Airways

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 16 Second

The Minister was said to have booked herself into the seat directly behind Buhari’s.
President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, reportedly refused a conversation with the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, who allegedly booked the same flight to London on Friday, May 22, with the intention of a possible dialogue.

According to Sahara Reporters, Buhari only exchanged greetings with the Minister while they were boarding the British Airways aircraft, and further attempts by Alison-Madueke to strike  a dialogue after they had settled down in their First Class compartment seats, was ignored by the retired Major-General.

The Minister was said to have booked herself into the seat directly behind Buhari’s.

It was reported that she got up a few times to make a conversation with Buhari, but he only nodded without permitting any dialogue.

Punch reported that the Minister ran to catch up with the President-elect at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport, Abuja before their flight.

Alison-Madueke’s UK trip was said to be originally scheduled for next Tuesday, May 26, after honouring the Senate summon over the lingering fuel crisis on Monday, May 25.

Sources said she changed her schedule, booking herself on the same flight with Buhari after learning of his trip.

It is believed that the Minister is scheming to be in the good books of the President-elect as her ministry is described as the most corrupt in Jonathan administration, and may be first to be probed by Buhari government.
