River States: Wike begins looting spree as lawmakers approve N10b

Read Time:2 Minute, 30 Second

Chief Nyesom Wike, the Care-taker Governor of Rivers State, has kick-started his looting spree, the State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said Thursday afternoon.

The party alleged that Wike has prevailed on the State House of Assembly dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to approve N10 billion for him without any attached projects.

“Wike has shamelessly confirmed our fears that he has no agenda for the development of Rivers State, rather than looting the common patrimony of the State with impunity, by influencing the State House of Assembly to approve the sum of N10 billion without the purpose of the approval being clearly stated,” Rivers APC said in the statement signed by the State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.

Ikanya quoted one of the principal actors in the House of Assembly who is unhappy about the development, as disclosing that the money is meant to be used by Chief Wike to bribe members of the Tribunal hearing petitions arising from the March 28 and April 11 general elections in Rivers State, the Rivers PDP leadership and Rivers State political leaders to enable the Tribunal rule against APC despite the mountain of material evidence presented by the party on how the elections in Rivers State were rigged.

“Part of the fund, we are meant to understand, is to be used to pay off the wife of the former President, Dame Patience Jonathan, Dr Peter Odili and others for imposing Chief Wike on Rivers State against the wishes of our people and against the rotational principle that would have seen the Riverine parts of the State producing the governor after 16 years of rulership by the Upland parts of the State,” Rivers APC said.

Chief Wike, the party said, “perfected this looting spree when immediately after his swearing-in ceremony on 29th May, 2015 he locked out both the Permanent Secretary and the Chief of Staff, Government House, until 31st May, to enable him loot the property in the Government House – after with he turned around to maliciously allege that former Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, looted the place before leaving office.”

Rivers APC, however, vowed not to be blackmailed or intimidated, saying: “All these ploys notwithstanding, we wish to reiterate that no amount of thieving, misappropriation of public funds will deter us from fighting the evil cause Wike’s personality represents. Apart from trying to deny the Riverine areas of their right to produce the next Governor of Rivers State after Amaechi, his illegal imposition forebodes dangerous times for our dear State. Most importantly, we cannot give up the fight to avenge the blood of hundreds of our people killed in order to realise Wike’s mission to capture the Rivers Government House at all cost.”

NASS: Saraki, Lawan’s men close ranks

0 0
Read Time:7 Minute, 49 Second

ABUJA—The dust raised over the National Assembly leadership contests was, yesterday, settling as some antagonists of Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara have commenced peace moves with some now eyeing juicy committee positions.

The peace moves nonetheless, the two major political parties were unceasing in their own acrimony.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, warned the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, not to intimidate or harass the Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa and the National Assembly Service Commission for performing their statutory functions during the inauguration of the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, the threat of sanctions against Senator Saraki and Speaker Dogara pledged by the APC was as at, yesterday, yet to be communicated to the two men or their leading associates.

Sources told Vanguard, yesterday, that a number of APC senators who had expressed opposition to the emergence of Senator Saraki have now started making peace and coming over to pledge allegiance to Saraki.

“I cannot believe what these politicians can do for committee positions,” a source privy to the development said.

“See the way they are betraying Senator Ahmad Lawan because they want juicy committees,” he said in reference to the entreaties from some former supporters of Senator Lawan who have reportedly sought accommodation in the camp of Senator Saraki.

Also in the House of Representatives, several state caucuses including legislators from Kano and Jigawa, who were in the front of the battle to stop the emergence of Dogara as speaker, came to make peace yesterday.

Gbajabiamila accepts defeat

Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, the official candidate of the APC who lost to Dogara in the leadership contest also pledged his allegiance to the new speaker of the House of Representatives.

Speaking, yesterday, when he led about 20 supporters of his aspiration to the national secretariat of the APC in Abuja, Gbajabiamila said they have accepted defeat.

He also overruled any legal action against the Dogara.

He said: “We have just gone through an election in the House, so we came to meet with the party regarding the election and how the party is going to remain strong and united and move forward so that we can deliver the deliverables and programmes of the party through the House.

“Go to court for what? I don’t know about the Senate. I can only speak for the House. Nothing happened in the House. We had an election. It is different from the Senate. In the Senate, people were deprived of their fundamental rights to express themselves and vote.

“We will work with the leadership of the House and the Speaker, so long as the party’s programmes are properly articulated and pursued on the floor of the House. We will work with the leader of the House. He is an APC member. He is not the Speaker of the APC. He is the speaker of the whole House.”

Asked if he was in support of the party’s position to take disciplinary action against the erring members, the former minority leader said: “That is the prerogative of the party. All I know is that in every association, there must be discipline. Whatever the party decides to do, that is for the party. It is not for me.”

Similarly, Mohammed Monguno, who ran for the office of the deputy speaker from Gbajabiamila’s camp but lost to Yusuf, also told journalists they would allow peace to reign in the interest of the nation.

He, however, regretted that some members of the party ignored APC’s decision and expressed his support for sanctions against the erring members.

“Definitely, if a party member errs, there must be sanction so that it will serve as a deterrent for others not to do same in future”, he said.

State caucuses pledge allegiance to Dogara

A number of state caucuses in the House of Representatives including some that fought against the emergence of Dogara also came to pledge allegiance to the speaker yesterday.

The state caucuses mainly from the North urged the speaker to forget the rancour that shadowed the contest.

Speaking on behalf of the Kano and Jigawa delegations to the House of Representatives, whose members overwhelmingly supported Gbajabiamila in the leadership contest, Alhassan Garba Ado Doguwa told the speaker that the delegation was in his office to felicitate with him on his victory. He said that the position taken by the Kano caucus was upon the directive of the party for which they have no regrets whatsoever.

He, however, called on the Speaker to bury all hatchets and carry everybody along in his leadership of the House.

He said: “While we have no regret whatsoever, with regards to the position we took during the contest, we must also accept the outcome of the process as democracy in action”.

“However, we did what we did according to our party directives. And we wish to declare our total support for your regime and work with you and also advise you whenever we see that you are going wrong,” he said.

State caucuses from Adamawa, Katsina, Gombe and Imo also visited and paid allegiance to the speaker.

Dogara expresses gratitude

Dogara expressed gratitude for the support and pledged to carry every member of the House along in the discharge of his duty.

He said: “My brothers; I won’t call you colleagues because we belong to the same geographical entity which is our country”.

“Let me say this. Politics is over. Now we have to face the issue of governance. In politics, people have different views and positions either based on conviction or personal interest.

“We must come together to bring about stability and unity in the House, so as to make the achievement of the President’s policies a reality by facilitating speeding enactment of legislations that would help him to govern well.

“We must also commend the President for his decision not to interfere in the process leading to our emergence by refusing to impose anybody on us. It was his stand on this matter that gave us the encouragement to offer ourselves for this leadership”, Dogara said.

He added; “I bear no ill feeling toward anybody who did not vote for me because this is the House for all and people must have their preference and I see all of us as one.”

The senators supportive of Senator Lawan meanwhile visited the national secretariat of the party where they had a closed door meeting with the national chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

Reporters were not allowed into the meeting and about 20 senators came out of the meeting looking pensive. They refused to comment on the outcome of their meeting with the claim that they had been ordered not to speak to the press on the issue.

Led by Senator Banabas Gemade, and including Senators Lawan and George Akume, the senators met with the national chairman for about one hour.

Even the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed who was present at the meeting also refused to speak on the meeting.

“I think the party made its position clear on the matter, that it is unhappy with the outcome of the election and I think we won’t say anything beyond that. What the senators will do is within the capability and rights of the senators.”

Meanwhile, aides of the Clerk of the National Assembly, CNA, have denied receiving any communication from President Muhammadu Buhari to delay the inauguration of the 8th National Assembly.

Sources in the CNA claimed that there was neither official letter, nor SMS message from the Presidency directing the Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa, to delay the inauguration.

The source who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to make any official statement on the matter said: “There was no official communication through memo from the Presidency, not even text messages or phone calls.

“Anybody that has any form of evidence like that, I challenge the person to make it public. Even if there was anything like that, it was not enough to stop the proclamation because it is a constitutional ritual that happens every four years.

“The proclamation letter from the President directed that the inauguration should take place by 10 am. Having done the proclamation, you cannot create a distance in time.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu was quoted as saying that a message was sent to the CNA to inform him of the President’s meeting with the APC National Assembly members and the need to delay the inauguration.

Yesterday, one of the supporters of Senator Lawan, Senator Kabiru Marafa from Zamfara state wondered why the CNA should proceed with the inauguration of the 8th Senate with only 57 Senators that were present as at the time the election of the Senate President was conducted.

“Why was he in a hurry when he knew that only 57 Senators were in the chamber for the legislative exercise, what would he have lost if he had delayed it in obedience to the presidential directive.

What next for Igboland?

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 12 Second

Igbos have displayed a clear preference for ex-President Goodluck Jonathan; and their fondness for him is understandable.

They like the fact that Jonathan has two Igbo middle names (Ebele and Azikiwe). And many of them feel that he did well for them by, for example, appointing the first Igbo Chief of Army Staff (Lt Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika) since the civil war.

A friend of mine recently bumped into Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State; and Obi told my friend that he supported Jonathan (despite belonging to a different political party, APGA) because Jonathan had given him almost everything that he had requested on behalf of his state.

Meanwhile, because South-Easterners are close neighbours of South-Southerners, there is plenty of interaction on every level and many of the latter (this columnist included) have Igbo mothers, Igbo spouses and Igbo relatives.

It is also worth noting that a significant number of Niger Deltans (the Ikwerres of Rivers State and Ikas of Delta State, for example) have Igbo ancestries.

Long story short, despite occasional tensions, the fact that Ikwerres, etc, sometimes vehemently deny their Igbo roots (weird, given that they have names like Ngozi and Chidi!) and the fact that Niger Deltans sometimes make nasty remarks about Igbos, the two groups actually have a lot in common and often do business together and are bound together by strong emotional and blood ties.

In other words, plenty of Igbos regard Jonathan as their cousin! And I hope that President Buhari will also make a special effort to woo the millions of Igbos who have been in mourning since he won the election and are flooding the internet with bitter ranting complaints about his past “sins” and his current performance (even though he has been in charge for only a fortnight!).

The most successful leaders are loved and respected across the board, even by people who originally viewed them with scepticism or hostility and once backed their political rivals.

Igbos are enterprising and hard-working. Many professions are populated by clever Igbos. Many top entrepreneurs are Igbo. Igbos can survive without government patronage because they know how to generate real wealth.

In a nutshell, they add a lot of value to the Nigerian Project; and since most of them are practical, logical, no-nonsense people, I’m sure that they will warm to Buhari eventually if he reaches out to them and does well in general.

ALL sane and decent Nigerians will hail Buhari without reservations if he pulls off major feats like curbing corruption and sorting out the electricity problem.

By the way, the kind of people who say that no Niger Deltan should ever rule again are also the kind of people who insist that Igbos must never rule. And I despair when I hear this bigoted rubbish! Even if I didn’t have Igbos in my family tree, I would wonder why anyone should write off an entire ethnic group.

As far as I am concerned, the next time the South is given a chance to deliver a president, it will be their turn and we should all back a good Igbo candidate.

Sincere gratitude

I would like to warmly thank Edem Duke, the former Minister of Culture/Tourism, Pius Anyim, the former SGF and the other PDP officials who were kind to me and other APC supporters during the transition period.

They didn’t sulk or give us the impression that they resented our election victory and regretted the fact that they would soon lose their jobs.

I was a member of the Inauguration Committee’s media/publicity sub-committee and was deeply touched by gentlemanly gestures such as Mr Duke’s insistence on providing us with a lovely lunch whenever we had a meeting in his office.

NIGERIA: Senator applauded as he casts vote for Senate President

0 0
Read Time:40 Second

Senator Buruji Kashamu, on, Tuesday, June 9, 2015, was applauded by his colleagues as he cast his vote during the elections to choose the Senate President.

Kashamu will be representing the Ogun East Senatorial District in the upper legislative house.

The Senator has recently been in the news due to extradition attempts made against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The NDLEA has been seeking to arrest Kashamu and send him to the US to face drug charges.

The agency’s plans have however been put on hold as a Federal High Court in Lagos has overruled the proceedings against the Senator.

Kashamu was allegedly indicted for drug dealing in 1998, in a case which reportedly formed the basis for Netflix hit series, “Orange is the new black.”

Woman reports how 4 policemen tortured her over stolen iPad allegation

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 54 Second

A 29-year-old woman, Karamat Eleha, a trader in the Balogun Market, Lagos State, is one angry woman at the moment as she has accused four police officers attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), of the state Police Command, of torturing her over an allegation of a stolen iPad, and in the process, inflicting serious injuries on her.

The woman who said the owner of the iPad, an influential woman who resides at Ajah area of the state, had reported her to the police alleging that she stole the item and the police led by one Abiola also known as Abbey, while searching for the iPad, allegedly stormed the building Eleha lives with her mother at Idumagbo area of Lagos Island, where they searched each apartment without finding the missing iPad.

On her return from where she had gone to, Eleha was asked about the missing item and was also searched but nothing was found on her but the police still went ahead to arrest her, insisting that they were getting signal from a tracker that the device was in the compound. They took her to their station where she was detained and tortured seriously.

Hear her narration of the ugly incident:

"Around 10.20 pm on May 14, I just returned home from a fellowship when the policemen asked me about a missing iPad and I told them I knew nothing about it. They checked my bag, but nothing was found there.

They took me to a room which they called ‘theatre’. They stripped me naked and tortured me for hours.

Even my legs were broken. When they realised that I was bleeding, they took me to a nurse, who charged them N3,000. They later gave the nurse N1,000 to treat me."

But the Lagos State POlice Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, has exonerated the officers, saying Eleha was only invited to the station and was never tortured.

"An iPad was stolen and was traced to her compound. It was observed that the iPad was on the streets she (Eleha) passed through and she was invited to the station.

There was no issue of torture. I don’t know what torture she is talking about."

Rauf Aregbesola: PDP urges Governor to sell helicopter to pay workers’ salaries

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 41 Second

The Osun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Governor Rauf Aregbesola to sell the helicopter he supposedly acquired for the state to pay salaries of workers who are currently being owed by the government.

The state PDP also advised Aregbesola to stop spending wastefully in order to ensure that funds are raised to pay the workers.

This was contained in a statement released by the Director of Media and Strategy of the Osun PDP on Sunday, June 7, 2015.

The statement reads:

“The PDP is urging the government to sell the helicopter Governor Aregbesola said was procured for the state. He should also stop frivolous trips to Cuba.”

“What this administration told us was that the helicopter was to be used for surveillance, but we have since discovered that the machine is only serving the travelling needs of Mr. Aregbesola and his family. This remains one draining pipe that must be blocked.”

“The governor and his aides should also forthwith stop travelling in chartered aircraft around the world. If President Muhammadu Buhari could be travelling on British Airways, even when aircrafts in presidential fleet are available, there is the need for Governor Aregbesola to borrow a leave.”

“The whole world is aware of the fact that former Ekiti lawmakers were heavily bribed on the bill of Osun State for several months, where they mapped out strategies on how to impeach Governor Fayose.”

“It is also fresh in minds the huge amount Ogbeni Aregbesola expended on the last Ekiti State governorship poll, Lagos State governorship poll and the Presidential project of the All Progressive Congress. But if Ogbeni Aregbesola will not treat this advice with disdain, and henceforth, begin to act as the governor of all, we believe at least he will be able to pay few months of the backlog of salaries owed workers and retirees.”

The governor, in response, however described the suggestions as childish and an attempt to gain cheap publicity.

NIGERIA: Wole Soyinka laments Chibok girls’ fate

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 1 Second

Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka has lamented the continued captivity of the missing Chibok girls.

Professor Soyinka said further that the situation was especially worrying due to the fact that no one could say what had become of the girls.

The eminent playwright made the statement on Saturday, June 6, 2015, while giving a speech titled “Faith, Science and Imagination in the Temple of Knowledge” at the convocation ceremony of the Kwara State University,

“It is disheartening that the abducted girls have not been rescued about 60 weeks after their kidnap. The kidnapped pupils were potential doctors when we sent them to take their first qualifying examination; up till today we cannot say whether they are alive, whether they are in slavery or had been sold off,” Soyinka said.

“All we know is that they have been dehumanised, brutalised and their childhood taken away from them. Sometime I wonder whether we are speaking of a remote, newly discovered planet or we are speaking of this very planet on which you and I are standing today,” he added.

The Chibok girls were abducted by Boko Haram militants on April 14, 2014 and most of them remain in captivity.

NIGERIA: NAFDAC bans ogogoro consumption

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 10 Second

The honeymoon is over for local gin aka ogogoro lovers as the federal government has placed a ban on the drinks.

The ban comes in the wake of several deaths in Rivers and Ondo States due to food poisoning linked to consumption of local gin.

Addressing newsmen, the Director General of National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration Control (NAFDAC), Dr Paul Orhii, said about the unfortunate deaths,

"A preliminary investigation by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and WHO ruled out any infectious diseases and confirmed the possibility of poisoning as the cause and in turn advised NAFDAC to conduct further investigation. The symptoms suffered by victims included vomiting, abdominal pain, blurred vision, headache,  dizziness and loss of consciousness with subsequent sudden deaths of 18 victims."

Orhii who was joined at the briefing by NCDC Director, Prof. Abdulrahman Nasidi, explained that all indications showed that "these symptoms are the hallmark signs of methanol poisoning."

The NAFDAC boss  further said that the "results of the laboratory investigation revealed methanol toxicity. Five samples were found to contain high concentration of methanol in them."

Based on this and the apparent high risk with the consumption of locally made gin, Orhii said considering it has become imperative to "warn the public to desist from the consumption of unregistered locally made spirits (ogogoro) and other unregistered bitters."

NIGERIA: Lagos State Governor rejects use of siren

0 0
Read Time:45 Second

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode will not be using sirens during his stay in office, his spokesperson has said.

According to Ambode’s media aide, Habib Aruna, the Governor will stay in traffic like other citizens instead of using a siren to clear the roads for easy passage.

“In fact, last Tuesday, when the governor was going to the airport to travel to Abuja, he was held up in traffic on Awolowo Way, Ikeja for about 30 minutes. He did not use the siren to pave way for himself,” Aruna said.

“He just remained in the traffic patiently for 30 minutes. People who saw him in the traffic were hailing him for being a good example and wished him well,” he added.

Ambode’s predecessor, Babatunde Fashola had also adopted this method and refused to use a siren when navigating round the state.

APC: Rancour in party over Gbajabiamila’s House of Reps Speakership endorsement

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 24 Second

Following the endorsement Femi Gbajabiamila by the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party's consensus candidate for the office of Speaker in the House of Reps., his main challenger, Yakubu Dogara has faulted the election process, describing it as "illegal."

The party's National Secretary, Alhaji Mai Mala Buni, had on Saturday, June 5, announced Gbajabiamila, who was the Minority Leader in the Seventh House, represents Surulere Federal Constituency 1 of Lagos State, as the party's candidate for the Speakership run.

Mohammed Monguno, from Borno state, also emerged as the party's sole candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker.

Speaking after the election, the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, urged Gbajabimila to run an all-inclusive House by reaching out to his colleagues who were aggrieved with the process.

There was rancour among the elected lawmakers, with the supporters of Hon. Yakubu Dogara claiming total ignorance of the voting process.

Speaking to journalists on behalf of the Dogara camp after the walk-out, Hon. Jubril Abdulmumin said they were not prepared for a primary election, and it should therefore be cancelled.

He termed the election process "illegal’’, adding that Dogara's was still in the race for the position of Speaker as there were 360 lawmakers-elect from all parties.

Abdulmumin and 160 lawmakers alone could chose the Speaker.

He also said the entire process was an ''ambush’’, manipulative and indicative of the fact that the party leadership came with a predetermined position which was skewed to favour Gbajabiamila.

The legislator said the party had acted contrary to the provisions of the party’s constitution.

"It did not prescribe that a primary election be conducted for the Speakership, contrary to the provisions of the House Standing Orders."

He said it was at the point where the APC National Vice-Chairman North, Senator Lawal Shuaibu insisted the process must go on that Dogara's supporters made their feelings known.

"At this point, we had no option than to stage a walk out of the hall and address newsmen,’’ Abdulmumin said.

Reacting to the development, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the party had to make a move.

"We cannot begin the Eighth Assembly with two candidates, hence the party adopted the election process for the lawmakers.

''It is for the National Assembly members-elect to pick their choice candidate, and whoever emerges automatically becomes the party's candidate.''

He however warned that disciplinary action awaited any legislator who goes against the party's decision.

Mohammed also disclosed that the APC legislators were made to sign an undertaking to abide by the outcome of the primary election to select the party's consensus candidate.
