The Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Monday Igbuya on Sunday said that his fortune was a clear testimony to the fact that power belongs to God.

Igbuya who spoke at a special thanksgiving service in Sapele said without God, the efforts of those struggling to get to political offices would be in vain.

He emphasized the hand of God in his political life, saying that God stood for him from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries in Sapele to his victory at the Court of Appeal, Benin Judicial Division.

Drawing inspiration from the Book of Psalms, Igbuya said “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when people rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive”

In his words “PDP won the House of Assembly election in Sapele State Constituency of Delta State. It was the toughest and freest election in the history of the area. The Court of Appeal affirmed the decision of the National/ Legislative Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, Delta State in Petition No. EPT/DT/HA/26/2015 delivered on 7th October 2015” he said.

Igbuya advised his opponents to join him in developing Delta State.

“Some of my political enemies are here. They are members of this church. They wanted me out of the political system. If you are truly destined for greatness, people plotting to stop you are wasting their time. It is time to come together and channel all our resources towards the development of the State” he said.

Igbuya who also advised politicians in the state to shun hatred recalled his vow immediately he became speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly.

“I will do something significant for Bethel Baptist Church should I come out victorious at the Tribunal and the Court of Appeal. I was baptized in this church. I dedicated all my children in this church. There is a brand new passenger bus outside for the church” the representative of the good people of the Sapele Constituency said.

The Court of Appeal affirmed the decision of the lower tribunal delivered on 7th day of October, 2015.

Delta State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon Monday Igbuya, on Monday pledged that he would work toward a robust Nigeria Union of Journalists in the years ahead by giving all the support, encouragement and cooperation in the realization of the union’s set goals, saying,“I am aware that the practice of journalism has become more expensive due to new technologies and the advent of social media, which has made information to move at a frightening speed.”

In his acceptance speech for the Award of Excellence in Legislative Competence and Exceptional Leadership, Igbuya applauded the practice of journalism in the country especially the high level of professionalism and commitment of journalists to the process of nation building.

The Speaker who received spontaneous cheers from the cream of journalists promised not only to be sensitive to the yearnings and aspirations of Deltans but also proactive on all matters of urgent importance.

He said “I want to appreciate the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Delta State Council for counting me worthy of this prestigious award. It is truly an honour to receive an award from your highly esteem body, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). I really appreciate this effort of an early positive report card. This benevolence is a great one to me and members of the Delta State House of Assembly”.

Igbuya who expressed delight at the activities of journalists in Nigeria, particularly Delta State, said the role of the media cannot be downplayed by any society,

“It will be noteworthy to appreciate the role of the media in our nascent democracy. Without the media in our society, the public will not be aware of the agenda and programmes of this administration”

The speaker also seized the occasion to commend his colleagues.

“This award belongs to every member of the Delta State House of Assembly. Without members, there can be no speaker. Without the honourable members, I would not be standing here today to receive this award”

PMAN must brace up for the new challenges – Delta Speaker

The Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Monday Igbuya on Monday spoke of his personal respect and feeling for the practitioners of music in Nigeria, urging them to support government efforts at improving the revenue of the state.

The speaker said he saw the role of Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) as very fundamental along with that of the government in moving a nation to its ideal setting.

Igbuya spoke in Asaba during the visit of PMAN officials in Delta State to his office.

He urged them to use their skills to enlighten the people on the ideals of good governance,

He also appealed to them to think of music that can increase the Internally Generated Revenues of states.

“Musicians must look for ways in which they can benefit from government. They must educate government officials on how to shift from oil and federal allocations. They also need to educate the people on taxes, electronic campaign and a clean environment “he advised.

Igbuya who thanked the group for supporting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, recalled his father’s contribution to the music industry.

“My father was an organist. He played music but none of us took after him. However, we are using the Igbuya Foundation to support the music industry by sponsoring people at the university level” he said.

Earlier, the chairman, PMAN, Delta State Chapter, Evangelist Quincy Tebite, congratulated the speaker on his victory at the poll, his emergence as the speaker, victory at the tribunal and at the Court of Appeal.

Senate orders reinstatement and promotion of policeman suspended for 21 years, senator adeola reacts

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 54 Second

Following a petition presented by Senator Solomon Adeola (Lagos West) on behalf of one of his constituents, Sgt. Amos Olaniyan on October 6, 2015, the Senate has ordered the reinstatement, promotion and payment of all dues to Sgt Olaniyan who was verbally suspended from the Nigerian Police Force 21 years ago.

This follows the consideration and adoption of recommendations of the Report of the Senator Sam Anyanwu led Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petition that investigated the suspension of Sgt. Olaniyan from the Force.

The Senate adopted the two recommendations of the committee namely: “That the officer Sergeant Amos Olaniyan be fully re-integrated into the Police Force with a
letter of reinstatement and apology” and “That all his dues including promotions and entitlements be fully granted and paid”

Senator Adeola while presenting the petition earlier stated that Sgt. Olaniyan was
verbally suspended in 1994 on a baseless allegation of bribery which an Orderly
Room Trail discharged and acquitted him but the Police refused to recall him
back even as he had his Police ID card and Uniform.

Reacting to the findings and resolution of the Senate, Senator Adeola expressed joy that at last justice has been done to his constituent who had suffered for 21 years without any redress adding that he will always fight for the interest of all
his constituents and the people of Nigeria.

“I was greatly disturbed when I saw his petition as I did not believe this could
happen to any citizen of Nigeria. This was after he had written petitions to previous Inspector Generals of Police and the Police Service Commission and even late President Umaru Yar’adua to no avail.” He stated.

He said he was happy for the family of Sgt. Olaniyan who had endure severe hardship and deprivation on the loss of employment by the breadwinner adding that he will continue to work for his constituents who may have similar cases.

Speaking on the issue, senate President Bukola Saraki, stated that citizens of Nigeria that cannot afford legal fees to seek redress should have recourse to the Senate adding that the Senate Police Affairs Committee should ensure compliance with the resolution and other similar resolutions and report back to the Senate in
two weeks.

Signed:

Chief Kayode Odunaro

APC dedicates victory at the Appeal Courts to the Adube family, other martyrs of 2015 electoral violence in Rivers State

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 22 Second

The Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, is dedicating our overwhelming victory at the Courts of Appeal in the past two days to the Chief Christopher Adube family and others killed before, during and after the 2015 general elections in Rivers State.

By bedtime last night, Friday, December 11, the Appeal Courts have dispossessed the PDP of all 3 stolen Senatorial and 12 House of Representative seats. Re-run elections for those seats have been ordered in 60 days from date of judgment..

The APC believes that there can be no better way to bid farewell to Chief Christopher Adube who was interred yesterday than to dedicate the recovery of our stolen mandates to the ultimate sacrifice the late Chief Chris Adube, his 3 children, younger brother and driver made when they were murdered in one fell swoop in the late Chief’s home on Good Friday 3rd April, 2015. We dedicate these victories to Police Corporal Ifeanyi Okorie killed when the APC Governorship Campaign Team was attacked at Okrika and close to 100 others killed before, during and after the 2015 elections in Rivers State.

We acknowledge the fact that despite being slow and cautious, the wheel of justice has started its tortuous journey and will not stop until those behind the entire debacle that took place in Rivers State either as direct killers or manipulators of the electoral process are held to account by the law of the land. Today, they may be free and dancing on the graves of those they killed but surely they have two major prices to pay – the price before the law here on earth and that before God Almighty hereafter.

The APC believes, more than ever before, that the judiciary remains the citadel of justice for the oppressed from the injustice of those who misuse individual and state power in Nigeria just as it obtains elsewhere in the world. We believe that there is no alternative to doing the right thing; for those who do not quite share this ideal, a day of reckoning will always come.

It is the belief of the APC that the recovery of our stolen mandates shall be total to further demonstrate that crime does not pay. Indeed, those who levied mindless violence on Rivers people and residents of our once peaceful State and in the process made away with their hallowed mandates must not only be made to go home empty-handed but should become guests to the laws of the land.

To our numerous members, the APC would like to thank you for your steadfastness and continually rising above the blood-tainted filthy lucre those with your stolen mandates dangle before some of you. The APC urges you to continue to damn Satan and his temptation for a new day is only around the corner.

For the umpteenth time, (DSS) has scoffed at a valid court order by refusing to release Nnamdi Kanu

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 31 Second

For the umpteenth time, the Department of State Security (DSS) has scoffed at a valid court order by refusing to release the Director of Radio Biafra and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, just as it did with that of the magistrate court, Abuja about two months ago that sparked off demonstrations nationally and internationally, which also left many people dead and others wounded.

In what appears a show of its determination to do things its own way, regarding its relationship with court orders, the agency on Friday, practically sniggered at the orders of Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja, that the IPOB leader be released unconditionally.

had reported exclusively this morning that Kanu was not able to regain freedom after the court pronouncement on Thursday, because his lawyers were not able to secure the enrolment order from the court.

But armed with the document, they were able to approach the DSS today, only for the agency to rebuff the order on the ground that the Director General was not in the office and practically ordered the legal team out of their Abuja office.

“This morning, the legal team was able to get the enrolment paper signed and with a bailiff, they went to the office of the DSS this, and successfully served them. But instead of releasing Kanu, they were told to go on the ground that the DG who would sign and order his release was not in the office. They were able to ease the team out of their office, telling the lawyers to go that they would be contacted immediately the DG returns. That is the latest, a source told Whirlwindnews.com, a few minutes ago.

The palpably disturbed source, argued that the implication of the development was that Kanu would likely spend the weekend with the DSS. “You know today is gone. What it means is that they may have to wait till Monday, the next working day. I don’t know why this is happening in this country. Why should these people choose to operate as if there is no law in this country? For how long will they continue with this? Is there an agenda they have that they don’t want the people of this country to know?

“Everybody had thought that they would use this court process to cool the entire polity. About seven people were killed yesterday for celebrating the announcement that Kanu has been released. Is it that they want these people to return to the street now that it appears that they are not releasing him. Recall that the magistrate court had earlier released him and they refused to allow him go only to rush to the Federal High Court, which finding no prima facae case against him, released him unconditionally. What are they then playing at? This is the question Nigerians and the international community must now begin to ask, before things get out of hands,” he added.

Wike finally exposes himself as responsible for violence, killings in Rivers State

Wike finally exposes himself as responsible for violence, killings in Rivers State  …Promises death to INEC officials

After months of pretence and living in denial, the Governor of Rivers State, Barr. Nyesom Wike, yesterday, in full glare of the world on live television, threw all caution to the wind when he confirmed that he was responsible for all the killing and maiming that characterised the 2015 elections as he openly told his PDP faithful to be ready to unleash violence in the forthcoming re-run elections in Rivers State

The governor who addressed his supporters at the Port Harcourt International Airport on arrival from Abuja and later at another event in Port Harcourt, asked his members to not only return any slap given to them but do so in threefold, among other unprintable things.

His audience was shocked when he warned that Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] officials sent to Rivers State who contemplates carrying out malpractices should first write their will as they will be put to instant death.

To all decent minds that saw or listened to the statements of the governor yesterday, Nyesom Wike’s vituperations were the ranting of a drowning man or, better put, the ranting of a frustrated Internally Displaced Politician [IDP].

In all, Nyesom Wike, by his unguarded utterances yesterday unbecoming of even a councillor, confirmed that he is behind the violence and criminality that are strangulating Rivers State since he came to power.

For the APC, what happened yesterday was God’s way of exposing a man who has been living in falsehood in order to fool the people and even God Himself. All the pretences about worshiping God by paying visits to churches and holding prayer sessions for the benefit of television cameras were mere attempts to mock God by Nyesom Wike but God cannot be mocked.

The APC wishes to remind Nyesom Wike that his unguarded diatribe against the Nigerian State, President Muhammadu Buhari and innocent Rivers people will not be taken lightly. While immunity protects a governor from prosecution, it does not protect him from investigation.

We call on the relevant authorities especially the INEC to hold Nyesom Wike responsible for any violence or harm that may be done to INEC personnel while on duty during the forthcoming re-run elections in Rivers State.

The APC believes that Nyesom Wike was merely talking tough to mask his inner despondency and misery arising from his recent legal losses. However, we are smart enough to take notice. We hear he is called High Tension, but High Tension without POWER is NOTHING.

Nigeria: The Revelations of the Damned

0 0
Read Time:10 Minute, 45 Second

“Unemployment, underdevelopment and poverty everywhere in the land. Our people are living like animals; we cannot even rear our children” – Source Unknown.
“Quite frankly, the war against Corruption is not strictly about me; it is about building a country for our children and forthcoming generations can live in peace and prosperity. All around the country, you see dilapidated infrastructure, poor healthcare, collapsed education, lack of public utilities, decayed social services, etc. These are all products of corruption because those entrusted to deliver these to the people have pocketed the money”. – President Muhammadu Buhari, 11.12.2015
I am a very simple writer; I write from the mind, untrained, unfettered, not under obligation to or paid by anybody or newspaper, and thereby free of baggage and garbage.
It is indeed very difficult (or how else can we say it?), to sympathise with former President Goodluck Jonathan, trying to absolve him of any complicity in the alleged (yes, alleged for now) unbelievable, mind-boggling, brazen, raping and looting of the country’s treasury that they said went unchecked during his six year tenure; insisting that because he relinquished power without a fuss when he lost the last Elections, then he’s an uncommon Hero; that he was a good and decent man, but all admitted that he was not good leader and President.
All these displays of sympathy are intended to appeal and convince us that Mr Jonathan should be absolved of any crime perpetrated under his now almost discredited government of mediocrity, nepotism, religious and tribal bigotry, deceit, deception and undisguised hypocrisy and deliberately hoodwinking of the Nigerian people.
How the people who allegedly participated and benefitted illegally under this ignoble regime could think they could continue to rape the country, yet conceal their crime for so long and further continuously consolidate these frauds without detection at some point in time is beyond the imagination. The crime and corruption are so massive, unfettered and unmanageable (even as a criminal concern) that there was no possible way the “shit will not hit the fan” sooner rather than later.
But due to their singular mediocre minds, suffused with greed, selfishness and idiocy, these alleged looters never ever gave a thought that their deeds will ever be revealed. This proved to me that the PDP never expected Jonathan to lose the election in March 2015. They were so confident they will still be in power, and thereby able to conceal and continue the massive looting of the country’s treasury, resources and assets. Some, however foresaw the days of Revelation, and thought that by jumping ship – from PDP to APC – they will be able to enjoy some form of immunity, or at least, protection from the revelations that will eventually burst out. Some saw the handwriting on the wall, but still decided to ignore the signs.
Even now, the person that should engage our sympathy is President Buhari. He is in deep trouble, if he does not know it. If all these revelations are true, then PMB’s government has a real problem on its hands. He has to see all these through to their logical conclusions – no sacred cows or untouchables because of political, religious and regional affiliations or loyalty. He must ensure fast, free and fair prosecutions, and if and when convicted, long jail terms for the perpetrators of such huge scams and frauds on Nigerians, depriving us of so many things, causing thousands, if not millions of unnecessary deaths directly and indirectly. It is getting more open and messier by the day, even more than the Halliburton Scandal and Independent Power Project scam of the Obasanjo days, probably because then, it was a PDP government doing themselves in. (They did not know it then, but they were setting themselves up for implosion and disgrace)
But as it is, if all these revelations prove to be true, then our main concern should be our compromised, irresponsible and very corrupt judiciary; our greedy, morally bankrupt and ignoble attorneys and our stupid democracy that favour powerful corrupt politicians and bastardise the Rule of Law, as well as the parochial and misguided partisan Nigerians that are holding hypocritical and sycophantic briefs for these corrupt, shameless, remorseless and nonchalant politicians’ misdemeanour and delinquency.
However, the problem is still very much caused by us, Nigerians. The outrage against Jonathan, Dasuki and the rest of these “exclusive sharers of our commonwealth” is our collective responsibility. Nigerians should be marching towards Aso Rock to demand full accountability and justice, and if Buhari fails to act on our demands, he should be pushed out of the way. Unfortunately, folks see it through the prism of party politics, but it’s bigger than that. Before writing this piece, I have already been accused of basing my statements on speculations thus making everything baseless. For how long shall we continue to shy away from the revelations and continue to call them speculations? Even if the level of crime is not as massive as is being revealed isn’t the fact that such crimes are committed by so few a people heinous enough to be looked at dispassionately and condemned roundly by all?
Now, it is important to delineate revelations and speculations. Over the past few weeks, it has become the norm of some sections of the society to denounce these revelations as mere unproven speculations; but I am not surprised at such incoherent pronouncement from my people; I have always said we are our own problems. Even if the scale of the revelations are not as massive as we are reading and come with touches of hyperbolic sensationalism, the fact remains that massive amount of the country’s money was distributed illegally, with impunity, total disregard for the rules of governance and with utter unaccountability amongst some chosen elite in both government, the PDP party, the media and business communities, including some who are now even in the ruling party, the President’s party, APC.
Nevertheless, as I wrote in two previous articles, “A People Beyond Redemption” and “A Peoples’ Aversion to the Truth is their Undoing”, the African mind is so politically primordial that it always blind people from fairness and truth. And this has summed up the kind of mixed horde we have in Nigeria. For a person, schooled and educated to a degree level, to call the unfolding revelation, confession, and admission by the looters themselves to be “speculations” just confirms my suspicions about our people’s attitude to corruption, and understanding of it from a moral viewpoint. But then, didn’t our former President himself say stealing of public funds is not corruption? Does it mean if a person is from my clan, or he is of the same faith with me, or we belong to the same political party, as far as these sets of people are concerned, that person can never do wrong? The pitiable thing is that majority of these unsolicited “pocket lawyers” and devil’s advocates suffered greatly as a result of action and inaction of the same person they are defending.
Unfortunately some (and again, repetitively, these are the educated and supposedly enlightened and sophisticated members of the society) of us are blind, guided by political, tribal, self-seeking and religious nonsense, who enthusiastically allow themselves to be used as injudicious missiles. One would think that every sane and sensible Nigerian will fall behind the present government in its anti-corruption campaign. But you just check out social media and the number of Nigerians carrying brief for the thieves and criminals being prosecuted is just unreal. What one cannot understand is the glee with which these set of Nigerians embrace every setback or hindrance that comes the way of the current regime in cleansing the corrupt system. That to me is unpardonable and is the sign of sick minds. Can you imagine a man jumping for joy and clapping enthusiastically every time that fireman trying to put out his burning house, with his family trapped inside, and are struggling to control the flame?
Well that is exactly the behaviour of those Nigerians that do not wish the current government well in its bid to stem the rot of the past years”.
What is even more shocking and disturbing should be the revelation that national budget is being shared like groundnuts in the market under the guise of funding to disengage insurgency and terrorism and the head of the same government claimed ignorance of approving the release of the funds. All the beneficiaries of the bonanza of doling out the funds were ex-President Jonathan’s allies; and one would like to know how that was accounted for in the nation’s books, or maybe we do not have books anymore? Where are the checks and balances put in place by the Constitution, the statutes books, legislations, rules and regulations, etc.? Where are the Auditor and Accountant Generals? Yet, these individuals, educated, widely-travelled and men/women of the world are worshipped as heroes nationally by Nigerians.
What kind of criminal racket are we operating here in this country, Nigeria, that we call government?
The political class in Nigeria has sought office not because of the desire to change the economic situation through dedicated, sincere and committed service but it has been mainly for their personal development. Their primary path to financial success has been through primitive and rapacious accumulation of wealth through stealing of public funds. It is so deep that the fight over fiscal federalism is nothing but for personal aggrandisement. Yet the fight is so strong and intensive one that we may think that is for the good of the commonwealth. No, it is not, as we ae all seeing and experiencing in our daily lives as the unfortunate victims of these criminals, or as the late great Fela Anikulapo-Kuti dubbed them several decades ago, Vagabonds in Power (VIP).
The scale of this primitive acquisition of wealth can only be comprehended from the littering of the national landscape with failed projects, moribund development, a collapsed and prostrate economy as evidenced in dilapidated and decayed infrastructure, poor healthcare, collapsed education, lack of public utilities, decayed social services, chaotic way of life, insecurity of lives and properties, uncertainly of daily bread, etc. These are all products of the prevalent and virulent corruption that has enveloped and strangled the country and its people because those entrusted to deliver these to the people have betrayed our trust and have pocketed the money.
Of more concern should be the human effects – poverty, distress, hopelessness, sufferings, diseases, hunger and deaths that we see and experience every day; yet some people still hang on to the belief that the current government is lying about the looting of this country over the past sisteen, and even more, years; or that the exercise to flush out looters is based on vindictiveness and witch-hunting and slanted towards members of the last government and party.
Well………………………..? Do they care? Until several lots of them are handed long jail sentences (or maybe even executed) this spectacle will continue. The hydra-headed corruption is not a beast to be tackled with soft gloves; let some high profile corrupt politicians, ex-governors, legislators, and their parasitic sycophantic rich tag-along businessmen (AGIP) who derive their wealth by preying on government contracts and largess to flaunt their ill-gotten gains in the face of their fellowmen and fellow women go to thirty years at Agodi or Kuje prisons, with the hardest of labour, and observe the effect and change on Nigerians.
So, dear compatriots, please look around you and perceive the chaos, the despondency, the desperation, the poverty and hopelessness on the faces of our people and tell the man in Aba, Maiduguri, Asaba, Ugep, Ado-Ekiti, Ilorin, Makurdi, Owerri, Ede, etc. that NOBODY is responsible, nobody can be held culpable for their unfortunate plight in a rich country like ours; that the people, rulers that forced or rig their way into power, are elected, selected, appointed and entrusted with managing their wealth and welfare for the past sixteen, thirty or fifty years cannot or should not be probed and jailed for their roles in the looting and raping of their country.
A word of caution to the current administration: Buhari must not be distracted from his anti-corruption stance and bout, however he must also not allow himself and his government to be swamped and grounded in the mire of the corruption fight. Corruption will always fight back a hundred times more viciously than the ones after it, and will do everything to stay ahead of the game. He should concentrate of governance and put reliable, sincere, seasoned and equally vicious anti-corruption people in place to engage in this fight for him and Nigeria.
It is indeed the Season of Revelation of the Damned!!!!

Nigeria’s neighbours threaten her survival —Ogbeh

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 36 Second

ABUJA — MINISTER of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, yesterday raised the alarm that some of Nigeria neighbouring countries have become serious threat to the survival of the economy of the country.

Ogbeh also warned the country to beware of the rice they eat that were imported through the Seme and Cameroon borders, alleging that such rice that had stayed about 10 years in the country they were imported from were not fit to be eaten by pigs.

This is just as the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, Rep Linus Okorie, has expressed worry that Nigeria is today one of the largest importers of food in the world, spending as much as $20 billion annually importing wheat, rice, sugar and fish among other food items.

Speaking during an interactive session with the House of Representatives Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions led by Rep Linus Okorie, the minister lamented that successive administrations, whether military or civilian, had abandoned the sector and depended on oil.

According to him, “the Nigerian elite, either military or civilian, consistently look down on agriculture to the extent that whoever takes interest is looked upon as a failure, it is the destination for the never do wells, it is the place for the poor peasants, for the nameless villager.

“Shall I say that we should thank God that the oil era is over, it is going to cause us stress, but we are a country that react best, when we are under stress, that is what we are and I am glad we all recognise now that we have to eat.

“We depended on $20 billion a year to import food, now we don’t have it. It is time to feed ourselves. I am glad that you, the younger generation, are also taking this matter seriously.

Influx of poisonous rice, weapons to Nigeria

“Some of our next door neighbours have become a major threat for our survival as a country, smuggling across Seme border while the Cameroon border is something that we are going to look into very seriously.

“We cannot destroy ourselves in an attempt to be charitable to others. Too much rice, fish, polluted chicken are coming across the borders and trucks with weapons are coming in too and it seems as if we can do nothing about it.

“Some of the rice coming in today is 10 years old, and it is not fit for pigs to eat. Per boiled rice is not consumed in the Republic of Benin, they eat white rice. Every grain of per boiled rice coming from that border is heading to this country which is about 10 years old.”

Speaking at the interactive session, chairman of the committee, Okorie said despite efforts by previous administration at redeeming Nigeria economy through agriculture, it was worrisome that the nation still spends a capital flight of over N1.3 trillion annually against its inherent potentials.

He said: “I want to point out the precarious and unsustainable state of our current food policy that is anchored on an annual food import of more than N1.3 trillion and the incontrovertible potentials of Nigeria’s agriculture.”

Okorie added that such policies that had defied all known approach to robust agriculture since the 80s despite the nation’s critical population was as a result of a wholesome neglect of research, education and extension system which was a key driver of the sector while regretting that they were being strangulated through policy instability, poor funding, lack of political will as well as obsolete legal framework.

He said the meeting was to build bridges in the critical agricultural sector, noting that what is now needed most is advocacy and awareness for farmers on the modern trends of agriculture He added that the ministry should consider revamping the Agricultural Development Projects (ADPs), while making case for financial autonomy institutes instead of depending on ministries for their budgets.

“The vision of the House Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions in the 8th Assembly, is to be the catalyst of an organized, funded and sustainable Agricultural Research, Education and Extension services sub-sector capable of driving economic diversification and total factor agricultural productivity in Nigeria,” said Okorie.

Arms probe: Buhari can’t be blackmailed — Bamidele

Read Time:1 Minute, 23 Second

Ado Ekiti—Mr Opeyemi Bamidele has said that attempt to blackmail President Muhammadu Buhari as one of the beneficiaries of the arms-gate scandal won’t stall the prosecution of those involved in the arms bazaar.

Bamidele insisted that President Buhari cannot be blackmailed, and would ever remain undaunted in the fight against corruption.

Speaking in Ado Ekiti yesterday, Bamidele said the two Jeeps donated to President Buhari after Boko Haram attacked his motorcade in Kaduna by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan should not be used to rubbish the fight against corruption and the prosecution of those that allegedly looted the nation.

Bamidele, who lampooned the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for being averse to sanity, said their attempt to stop the trial of those fingered in the multi-billion naira arms deal, had further exposed the PDP as a party that is inherently corrupt.

He said he expected the culprits and the PDP to have rather exhibited soberness considering the N333 billion arms deal and cover their heads in shame than to be raising mud against a President that was committed to sanitise the system and restore Nigeria to the path of glory.

He commended the president for coming out boldly to challenge whoever has a claim that he received a cash  gift from former president Jonathan to make it public, saying the cars presented to President Buhari was his statutory entitlements as a former Head of State.

Bamidele said such allegation coming after those that were behind the alleged massive looting of our commonwealth have been unveiled, was a decoy from the dazzled opposition PDP to taint the ongoing anti-graft war.

ExxonMobil empowers medical students

Read Time:3 Minute, 43 Second

If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail  —Benjamin Franklin

In recognition of this truth, TOMEB Foundation, a non-governmental organisation that focuses on education, youth development and sustainability, in conjunction with ExxonMobil, organised a one-day empowerment programme for final-year medical students of University of Lagos.

The aim was to get them to consciously plan for the future and equip them with basic skills and knowledge on how to set and achieve their goals.

At the event with the theme: Achieving Goals: A Dignified Successful Future is Possible, held at the College Auditorium of the institution, over 200 copies of The Personal Business Plan: A blueprint for running your life, purchased by ExxonMobil, were distributed to participants.

While delivering his paper, Art and Science of Self-Knowledge, Country Managing Director, Accenture, Mr. Niyi Yusuf advised students to reinvent themselves by developing communication skills that will enable them interact with people, stressing that students should have affinity for experimentation and change.

“Do you know who you are and what motivates you? What do you like and what would you die for? These are very important skills in life,” he said, citing renowned footballers such as J. J. Okocha, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi etc., who he noted may not  have doctorate degrees but whose   passion have brought them fame and fortune.

“To these people, football has become a business. Therefore, self-discovery is the key.”

Advising participants to find out when they perform best, Yusuf said “Confucius said ‘choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life’. You need to be conscious of what you are good at as self-awareness helps you identify your strengths, weaknesses, personalities, habits and values and ultimately areas for continuous improvement.”

Delivering a paper on Principles and practice of goals-setting and achievements, Senior Registrar in the Department of Public Heath, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibipo Abdurraheem-Salami, noted with concern that underemployment is a major problem among doctors, adding that the quality of training is not improving with the changing times. She advised the students to always have a clear plan of what they want out of life.

“Unless you are excellent as doctors, you won’t fly. Know yourself before setting a goal as it helps to envisage what you want to be in future.”

She said people do not set goals as a result of ignorance, the fear of failure or the fear of rejection.

In his paper, Dealing with Procrastination, convener of the programme and founder of TOMEB Foundation, Mr. Tunde Popoola said procrastination is the number one enemy that defers goals and advised participants to avoid delays.

“You don’t write your goals in the paper and go to bed; you have to take action.”

Pointing out that  impulsiveness is the major cause of procrastination, Popoola said “that is when you only do what comes to you – you have to watch it because if nothing limits you, you can excel in your future endeavours.”

He advised  participants to always plan ahead by embracing the 6Ps’ formula: proper prior planning prevents poor performance.

On how to achieve set goals, Popoola said: “Select any goal on which you have been procrastinating and take one step immediately. Also, do the most important and difficult task. Do not follow the normal route of most people; always start your day by doing your most important difficult task first. Make a list of all that you have to do the next day/week. Review the list using the ‘ABCDE’ method and the 80/20 Pareto Rule. If you do this everyday for about a month, it becomes a habit, “he said.

In her vote of thanks, the Provost of UNILAG College of Medicine, and chief host, Prof. Folasade Ogunshola thanked the organisers for the life-changing programme. She charged the participants to use the tips received to be their guiding light in their life pursuits. “Your attitude and how you use your strength to get to the top counts. And for some who are not going to practice medicine, this platform is a place to make self-discovery. Follow your passion and make sure that the passion is relevant to the system,” she said.
