APC not responsible for the arrest of suspected criminals in Okrika and Ogu/Bolo

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 56 Second

The attention of the Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, has been drawn to wild accusations by the PDP that the APC was involved in the arrests of its members reportedly made in Okrika and Ogu/Bolo by the Nigerian Police yesterday.

The State Working Committee of the APC has confirmed that no member of the APC at the units, wards and local government levels of the party in the areas in question was involved in the said security operations by the Police. If the PDP is claiming that alleged criminals arrested by the police are its members, then the PDP should look inwardly with diligence to ascertain the reasons and not to raise false accusations against the APC or try to obstruct the security agencies from doing their job.

We, like most residents of Rivers State, are aware that insecurity especially kidnapping, armed robbery and cultism have recently surged across the State including the axis in question. Right within Port Harcourt Metropolis, a policeman was brutally gunned down two days ago less than 24 hours after 3 policemen were also reportedly shot dead and the gunmen reportedly escaped through the waterways along the axis in question.

Therefore, if the police, and indeed other security agencies follow the trail of criminals and make arrests, we expect the PDP to support such an action or, at best, be quiet and let the security agencies do their work. That is why the APC refrains from making hasty comments on matters of security as not to unduly jeopardise the good work the security agencies are doing trying to make us all safe.

However, the hasty, unguarded and often distorted alarms the PDP raises whenever the Police set out to work tend to suggest that they may know more about the crimes and the criminals behind them than they are ready to tell the world. The PDP in Rivers State should not always politicise everything including matters of security.

The APC wishes to call on the heads of security agencies in Rivers State and their overall bosses in Abuja to disregard and ignore the false alarms and distractions by the PDP and concentrate on carrying out their constitutional responsibilities to ensure that security of life and property return to Rivers State.

“Wike, appointing the entire PDP members in Rivers State as Special Advisers will not save you,” – APC

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 23 Second

In view of recent judgments by the Appeal Courts on the National Assembly and Rivers State House of Assembly petitions over the 2015 elections, the outgoing governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike has embarked on a number of illegal actions occasioned by his desperation to remain in power.

Despite having earlier appointed 12 Special Advisers and other Senior Special Assistants, who are mainly with no briefs, he hurriedly allocated functions to 20 Commissioners he had appointed without swearing in for over a month.

Sensing that he is only buying time by approaching the Supreme Court over the nullification of his sham election as governor, Nyesom Wike decided to ask the erstwhile Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly [RSHA], Ikuinyi Awaji-Ibani to step aside while the only RSHA member whose case was settled at the time, Adams Dabotoru Dima, was installed Speaker, the calculation being that the Speaker will become the acting governor should the Supreme Court uphold the concurrent judgments of the Tribunal and the Appeal Court nullifying Wike’s election.

The APC has sadly observed that despite not having a quorum after the recent Appeal Court judgments, the RSHA was forced by Nyesom Wike to illegally reconvene to carry out functions such as confirmation of the appointment of Daisy Okocha as the Chief Judge of the State amongst other illegal actions.

Today, the governor has announced the swearing in of another batch of 15 Special Advisers who will never be allocated any functions because there are no more functions left. The single purpose behind these primitive, puerile and laughable appointments is the feverish desperation of Nyesom Wike to remain in power and the fear of the forth-coming re-run elections.

Therefore, the APC is urging the visibly confused governor to simply take the nominal roll of all PDP members in the 23 LGAs of Rivers State and, in one fell swoop, appoint, swear in and declare all of them Special Advisers. May be, this will make things a lot easier for him and his party.

In a related development, the APC has observed a sharp upsurge in shootings, killings and violence generally since Gov. Wike incited his followers not to report any slap on them to the Police but return such a slap 3 times. The killing of innocent citizens including police personnel has since taken a new turn in the past fortnight. We believe that security agencies would do the needful in establishing the nexus between Wike’s inciting speech and the new dimension of violence across Rivers State.

The APC is happy that Governor Nyesom Wike has taken his lawlessness and obscene lust for power to the Ugwumabiri or marketplace. It is left for the good people of Rivers State and indeed Nigerians generally to see who the real Nyesom Wike is.

Umahi kick starts N1.2BN Water Project, rural electrification

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 0 Second

The Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, has flagged off the construction of the Ivo Water Project estimated to cost over N1.2bn.

Speaking at the ceremony in Amagu Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area, Umahi disclosed that the project which was conceived when he was a deputy governor was a Federal Government-assisted project.

Umahi, who commended Senator Anyim Pius Anyim for his contributions towards the realization of the water project, said, “We requested for assistance from the Federal Government for this Ivo Water Project. It was supposed to be for Ishiagu alone, but we decided to expand it to reach Akaeze community and also get to our model rice mill in Oso Edda.”

He said that 70 per cent of the money needed to complete the project was ready, stressing that the counterpart funding from the Federal Government was also available with the state government.

Umahi, who used the occasion to thank the people of Ivo LGA for their support during the last governorship election, assured them of the provision of roads and electricity.

“Roads are still coming, electricity will still come,” he assured, stressing that when the water project is completed, the government will be proud to say that the water need of the LGA has been solved.

Earlier in an address on the occasion, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Francis Orji, stated that the project which has a 12-month completion period was awarded to Chap Construction Limited at the cost of N1, 203,824,347.44k.

Orji thanked Governor Umahi for his huge investments in the water sector and assured of the commitment of his ministry “to ensure that the project is started, executed and completed in the most professional manner”.

Similarly, Governor Umahi commissioned the Uburu Rural Electrification and Uburu Street light projects.

Performing the ceremony at Umunaga Agu-Ugwu and the Old Market Square, Amata Uburu in Ohaozara LGA, Umahi said, “When we came on board, we sat down to say look it is better to start our rural electrification community by community. If we come to one community, we finish everything about rural electrification of that community.”

The governor told Uburu people to hold the Commissioner for Power, Chief Emmanuel Uguru, responsible if there was any part of Uburu without electricity.

He said, “Our agreement is for this (electricity) to get to every part of Uburu so that for years, Uburu will not ask for electricity again, and from there we will go to another community anywhere in Ebonyi State.”

The governor announced with regrets, attempt by some people to vandalize the electricity cables and directed that the suspects must be prosecuted.

He charged Uburu people to protect all government investments in their area, warning that any vandalized public utility would not be repaired.

Umahi said, “You have to guard government’s investments. This is your own dividend of democracy. So any one vandalized will not be repaired.”

The governor thanked Chief Uguru and his team for their commitment in delivering on set goals.

Dakuku Set to Free Rivers from Wike’s Evil Grip – APC and Greets Governor-in-waiting on his 45th birthday

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 40 Second

Astute Politician and Administrator, Hon. Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, will in the first quarter of 2016 liberate the people of Rivers Statefrom the shackles of evil and maladministration to which they havebeen subjected in the past seven months by the Nyesome Wikeadministration, the State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress(APC) has said.

The ray of hope was contained in a statement by Rivers APCcongratulating Peterside on the occasion of his 45th birthday onThursday, 31st December, 2015. Peterside is the Rivers APC candidatefor the State Governorship Election in which both the ElectionTribunal and the Appeal Court have ordered to be repeated within 90days after voiding the sham polls of April 11, 2015 that illegallybrought Wike and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to power.

“We wish to heartily greet our Governor-in-waiting on the occasion ofhis 45th birthday, which is coming shortly after his repeatedvictories over Wike and the PDP in the courts of law. We have no doubtthat he will repeat this feat during the forthcoming Rivers re-rungubernatorial election. This has become imperative in view of thesharp increase of insecurity, kidnapping, armed robbery and diversecriminal activities in our dear State since Chief Wike became governor
by force on 29th May, 2015. We thank the good people of Rivers Statein advance for their votes and wish to reassure them that Petersideshall, upon assumption of office as governor, wipe away the tearswhich Wike has inflicted on them,” Rivers APC said in a statementsigned by the State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.

The statement issued Monday in Port Harcourt noted that “victory forPeterside in the court-ordered re-run polls will go a long way toaddress the three principal injustices visited on some sections ofRivers State4 one of which is the Riverine areas of the State notoccupying the seat of power since 1990.” Continuing, the party said:“The second injustice to be addressed is that of the Ogoni, a keytribe of the State, not producing a Governor, Deputy Governor or theSpeaker of the State House of Assembly since the creation of the Stateas far back as 1970. The last injustice is that of the South-EastSenatorial Zone not producing the Governor since the creation of theState, as Rivers East produced Dr. Peter Odili while Rivers Westproduced Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, thus leaving the South-East in thecooler all these years.”

According to Rivers APC, “Dakuku’s candidature is a divine script. Itenables APC to achieve two of the three necessary goals of concedingpower to the South-East Senatorial Zone and also shifting power fromthe Upland to the Riverine area of the State. Dr. Dakuku AdolPeterside, from the Riverine area of Opobo/Nkoro LGA, is a veteranfederal lawmaker, a symbol of unity and a symbol of hope for RiversState and her teeming population.”

The party warned that if Wike becomes governor, it will make theUpland to govern the State for 24 years, thus effectively excludingboth the South-East and the Riverine from governance of the State.“This to us in APC is the highest injustice that can be meted to afellow partner in the growth and progress of our dear State. This isthe mission and goal of the struggle and battle for the soul of RiversState,” the statement said.

It described Peterside as a personality widely accepted by all thesections of the State, a symbol of unity, visionary, egalitarian andmost importantly a patriot whose love for Rivers State and her peopleis infectious.

In addition, according to Rivers APC, “Peterside is a man who hasearned a reputation as a charismatic and disciplined leader; creativeand hardworking, a broad-minded fellow with strategic insight. Hebrings integrity, compassion, pro-poor perspective and intellectualdimension to bear in tackling tough national issues. His loyalty tofriendship and bridge building skills are remarkable. He is respectedas one of the most result oriented, meticulous, consistent,
trustworthy and God fearing political leaders. In all public officeshe has held he has brought innovation to bear and made remarkableimpact that has endeared him to his fellow compatriots. He is a rolemodel and mentor to several young persons, who look up to him forinspiration.

“As we congratulate him for turning 45 we urge him not to relent untilthe total freedom of River State from the politics of WIKEdness isachieved.”

Ebonyi workers to receive salaries Jan 15

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 12 Second

In keeping with his promise to accord priority to the welfare of workers, the Ebonyi State Governor, Chief David Umahi, has assured workers that their January salaries would be paid on the 15th.

Umahi gave the assurance in his country home, Uburu when the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress paid him New Year homage.

The governor, who noted that he had to step down every project last December to give junior workers 100% extra salary and 50% to senior workers, said “in the next 13 days workers will receive salary for January.”

He stated that the initial misunderstanding he had with the organized labour in the state “was brought by God himself because it made us to be on our toes.”

Umahi attributed the success so far recorded by his administration to God’s instruction, and promised workers of better welfare this New Year.

“There is no how we will implement an N101bn budget without the lives of workers changing, absolutely, no how,” he stressed.

The governor maintained his commitment to implementing the 2016
budget 100%, and assured that his fight against corruption in the state was total.

Umahi told the leadership of the organized labour that after the festive period, “we will try to organize properly and move together as a people.”

He added, “I won’t forget your labour of love; I won’t forget your commitment and I won’t forget all the struggles. We do remember.”

Earlier, in his remark, the Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, Comrade Ikechukwu Nwafor, said the delegation came to identify with the governor in this season of the Yuletide.

Nwafor said, “Labour cannot afford to celebrate this Christmas and New Year without coming to identify with this government and to pray that this year will be a better year for the government and workers of Ebonyi State.”

Meanwhile, Umahi has appealed to the people of Ohaozara Local Government Area to unite to attain greater heights this year.

Speaking when the stakeholders of Okposi Okwu and Mgbom Okposi autonomous communities visited him, the governor regretted that the seed of disunity caused by some disgruntled politicians had robbed the area of meaningful progress.

Umahi informed the stakeholders that the street light project of the state government would be extended to Okposi while the Okposi-Ugwulangwu- Ukawu road would be constructed.

He stressed the intention of his administration to develop the salt deposits in the area into modern salt factories as soon as the necessary tests were carried out to ascertain
their quantity and quality.

The governor also announced that all issues relating to “Ezeship” of Okposi Okwu has been put on hold pending the burial of a former Minister of Education, the late Dr.Igwe Aja Nwachukwu.

He warned the youth against cultism, stating that his administration would not fail to prosecute anyone found to be involved in activities that negated the peace of the area.

Governor Umahi later took some time out to inspect the on-going construction of the Amasiri- Okposi-Uburu Road.

He directed the construction company (Conrock Nigeria Ltd…) to stop further work on the road, pending its deployment of four bulldozers, three graders, ten tipping trucks and four water tankers to the site.

The governor warned that if after 10 days the contractor failed to meet his directive, he would terminate the contract.

Governor Umahi also inspected the failed “Akwa Etiti” bridge which links Amangwu Edda in Afikpo South Local Government Area and Amasiri in Afikpo North LGA.

He said that construction of another bridge would commence in the next four
weeks to save the people of the area from being cut off totally from the rest of the world.

Do not politicise efforts by security agents to make Rivers State safe for all

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 8 Second

The Association of Rivers State Professionals (ARSP) welcomes the ongoing actions by the Joint Task Force (JTF), the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to arrest the deteriorating security situation in Rivers State by undertaking robust pre-emptive raids on identified security dark spots and known cultists, kidnappers, armed robbers and other dangerous criminals.

Particularly, ARSP welcomes Wednesday’s security operations in Abuja Estate Waterside in Port Harcourt where criminals engaged operatives of the Nigerian Army in gun duel at the end of which various arms and ammunitions were recovered from the criminals. They include 5 AK 47 Rifles, 13 Magazines loaded with live ammunitions while 8 of the criminals fell to the superior firepower of the military and others escaped.

Similarly, based on intelligence reports, men of the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) Wednesday raided a location in Usokun in Degema and over 6 locations in Buguma reportedly belonging to the Caretaker Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government, Mr. Soboma Jackreece alias Egberi Papa, where SARS operatives came under heavy gun fire by his boys. After the duel, a SARS operative (policeman) was critically injured and is receiving treatment while 36 of the criminals were arrested, various arms and ammunition recovered. Also recovered were 669 Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) believed to have been snatched from INEC officials by Egberi Papa’s boys before the 2015 general elections.

The ARSP regrets that the local leadership of security agencies have since yesterday reportedly come under heavy pressure by top officials of the Rivers State Government to have the arrested criminals released as was noticed in the past but the security agencies have so far resisted the pressure this time around. We urge the security agencies not to succumb to the blackmail and pressure by the sponsors of the criminals believed to belong to the highest level in the Rivers State Government but should ensure that all those on the run are arrested and made to face the law.

The ARSP calls on the top echelon of the military, Police, DSS and other security agencies and outfits to intensify and replicate the ongoing security operations to cover the entire nooks and crannies of Rivers State to retrieve the State from the stranglehold of cultists, armed robbers, kidnappers and other criminal elements. We urge the Inspector-General of Police, the D-G of DSS, Service Chiefs of the Army, Navy and Airforce to provide moral and material support for the officers and men undertaking the current operations to ensure its logical conclusion.

The Senator representing Anambra-North Senatorial District in the 8th Senate today commented on the draft appropriation bill of the 2016 budget.

Senator Oduah in a statement made available to reporters after President Muhammadu Buhari delivered the budget to both houses of the National Assembly commended President Buhari on what she referred to as a “Very robust and seemingly thorough and well-thought out budget” and said that she hoped that this draft version addresses many of the economic and security situations that Nigerians are currently facing.

Additionally, Oduah stated that the budget addressing issues in rural communities is a big joy for her and she hoped that 2016 would set a new path for the country, as the President’s address seemed to touch on areas that include the boosting of oil and non-oil revenues; the more efficient collection and enforcement of VAT and customs duties; and the subsidized funding of the agricultural and solid mineral sectors.

Oduah also harped on the employment situation in the country, and urged Mr. President to take significant steps to address the problem.

“The young people of Nigeria need to be our focus moving forward,” Oduah said, “We need to ensure that the energy of our present generation of youth is put to good use in the furtherance of the Nigerian project.”

Oduah further hoped that with the swift passage of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper, the 8th National Assembly still have that zeal and commitment ready to move speedily to pass the 2016 Appropriation Bill.

In his remarks at the National Assembly, President Buhari assured Nigerians that his administration would not fall short. Senate President Bukola Saraki also reassured the lawmakers that the 8th National Assembly will continue to discharge their oversight responsibilities.
