As the race to the Akwa Ibom Hill Top Mansion continues to gather momentum, the Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has stressed the need for stakeholders to operate within the ambit of the electoral acts.

The SSG who made the call in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Oliver Oloukpo, further clarified that he had not made up his mind yet to contest the governorship election in the state as is being speculated.

“However, it is pertinent to clarify that, though Mr. Udom Emmanuel, the SSG is under intense pressure to join other illustrious sons and daughters of Akwa Ibom State who have already indicated interest to contest the 2015 governorship election, he is yet to make a statement on the issue or declare his intention to contest the 2015 gubernatorial election.

“As a law abiding citizen, I am directed by Mr. Udom Emmanuel to advise all those drumming up support for his participation in the forthcoming governorship election to exercise such legitimate demands within the ambit of the extant laws and in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Acts of Nigeria,” the statement declared.

The SSG disowned various posters, handbills, billboards or any other promotional material that dotted most of the local government headquarters of the state as well as on the streets of Uyo, the state capital, alluding to his candidacy in the forthcoming 2015 governorship election in the state.

Odoukpo in the statement stressed that the SSG had not sanctioned publication of articles or authorised the production of posters, handbills, billboards or any other promotional materials to enhance his popularity in the governorship race.

The clarification and position of the SSG concerning his commitment to the governorship election came just as indigenes of the state in tertiary institutions across the country endorsed him to contest the 2015 governorship election.

Meanwhile students of various tertiary institutions in state under the aegis of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee (JCC) also endorsed  Emmanuel, as Governor in 2015.

Led by its National Vice-President, Comrade Ubon Marcus and the State Chairperson, Comrade Aquila Akpan, the students during a solidarity visit to the SSG at the Government House, Uyo, said they were in total support of his governorship aspiration because of his numerous achievements.

The students were mostly drawn from the University of Uyo; Akwa Ibom State University; Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osura; Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron; College of Education, Afaha Nsit; School of Health Science and the Uyo City Polytechnic, among others.

The National Vice-President of the group, Marcus said the call on the SSG to succeed Governor Godswill Akpabio in 2015 was born out of patriotism by students who are concerned indigenes of the state, saying they will do whatever it takes to maintain their solidarity and support, describing Emmanuel as the choice of the students of Akwa Ibom State.

“The Akwa Ibom State students hereby persuade you to consider the clarion call by all and sundry in the state and declare your intension to contest for governorship in the state come 2015 within the shortest possible time or else we the Nigerian students in the state will declare for you.” she stressed.

Responding, the SSG who described the state Governor as a man of immense merit, charged the students to be good ambassadors of the state and strive to be excellent in their chosen disciplines

He urged all the students and their parents to support the Godswill Akpabio-led administration and cautioned them against cultism, saying “the state government has committed more resources into the education sector than any previous administration in the state.”

The SSG, who donated a brand new Toyota Hiace bus to the state branch of NANS/JCC among other requests, charged the students to justify the state’s commitment in education by coming out in flying colours saying, “the Akwa Ibom State of your dream lies in your hands.”

Jonathan’s Men Storm Ibadan, Seek S’West’s Support for President’s Re-election

Read Time:3 Minute, 24 Second

A huge crowd of people from across the South-west gathered at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan, yesterday to show their support for President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term as the regional rallies set in train penultimate weekend by the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria was berthed in the zone. Surpassing the 1.6 million people from the South-east that were said to have put their signatures to the endorsement of the president for another term, chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-west collected 1. 8 million signatures of the zone’s people said to be for Jonathan’s second term.

However, Ekiti State governor-elect, Peter Ayodele Fayose, was conspicuously absent at the rally. The Ekiti State chapter of PDP had in a release Thursday by its publicity secretary, Pastor Kola Oluwawole, said it will not participate in the TAN rally because it did not have the blessing of the leadership of the party in the South-west geopolitical zone.

“We are dissociating ourselves from the so-called proposed meeting/rally in support of President Jonathan’s second term ambition as announced by the coordinator of Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), Mr. Ifeanyi Uba, former Labour Party governorship candidate in Anambra during the last Anambra governorship poll and the CEO of Capital Oil.

“Our reason being that the planned meeting/ rally has not received the consent or blessing of leaders of the PDP in South-west,” Ekiti State PDP had said.

Many prominent politicians in the management hierarchy of PDP in the South-west attended the Ibadan rally yesterday organised by TAN, a group led by Kingsley Kuku, which says it wants to collect over nine million signatures of Nigerians from the six geopolitical zones endorsing Jonathan’s second term. They included former Deputy National Chairman of PDP, Chief Bode George; South-west caretaker committee chairman of PDP, Chief Ishola Filani; former Oyo State Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala; former Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State; former Senate leader Teslim Folarin; Prince Buruji Kashamu; former governorship aspirant in Oyo State, Yekini Adeojo; Seyi Makinde; Hazeem Gbolarumi; and serving senators Hosea Ayoola and Ayo Adeseun.
Others at the event were Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory Olajumoke Akinjide, Chief of Staff to the President, Jones Arogbofa, and Minister of Police Affairs Jelili Adesiyan.

Jonathan was not at the event, but his chief of staff told the gathering that the president was watching the proceedings live. He said the huge crowd at the rally was a demonstration that the people of South-west were with Jonathan. Arogbofa urged the president, who is yet to declare a second term ambition, to contest next year’s presidential election, saying it is by popular demand.

One of the highlights of the rally was the handing over to Secretary to the Government of the Federation Anyim Pius Anyim by Arogbofa of a booklet containing signatures of South-west people said to support Jonathan’s second term. Anyim said 1.8 million people from the Yoruba South-west had signed the register asking Jonathan to contest and continue with his Transformation Agenda beyond 2015.

The SGF said the signatures compilation for the return of Jonathan for a second term “is an ongoing exercise and similar rallies would be held in all the geopolitical zones of the country before the presentation of the overall documents in Abuja next month.”
Before presenting the booklets to the SGF, Arogbofa described the South-west zone as a home to Mr. President, recalling that the zone was the first to adopt him ahead of the 2011 election.

“I want to call on my people to let's work with unity of purpose and I can assure all of us that if we work together, the reward will be superlative. We worked for Mr. President in 2011 and we all can see that there's no regret and this time around, we will not regret but have more and better reward,” Arogbofa said.

Why Obasanjo Refused To Reveal His Next Of Kin At NIMC Office

0 0
Read Time:49 Second

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo today in Oke-Mosan Abeokuta registered for his National Identity Card (NIC) and decided to keep the information about his next of kin away from the prying eyes of reporters who were bent on capturing his personal data.Obasanjo who arrived at the National Identity Management Commission office around 1:35pm, quickly had his height measured and finger prints taken.

But when it got to the column requiring information about his next of kin, the former president who had been responding orally to the NIMC officials’ questions, picked a piece of paper, covered it with his palm, wrote the name of his next of kin and handed it over to the commission’s personnel.

He then turned to curious reporters and surging television cameramen, and said: “I have decided to keep my next of kin secret and away from you. If you know it, you will give it undue publicity,” the former president said.

Unbelievable!! Is this Right? Female Soldier Beats Bus Conductor to Coma in Lagos over change

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 2 Second

A female soldier in the Nigerian army yesterday beat a conductor to coma over change at Iyana Isashi, along Lagos- Badagry expressway in Lagos State. LeadershipNg reports that the soldier, who was in mufti, had boarded the mini- bus at Mile 2 and was going to Agbara area of Ogun State before the incident occurred. An argument which degenerated into a fight began when the soldier who allegedly gave the conductor N500 demanded for her change and the conductor said he had given her the money.

Although some passengers in the vehicle supported the woman, asserting that the conductor did not give her any change, all efforts made by the passengers to make the conductor do so proved abortive. One of the passengers, Ikechukwu Obi told LEADERSHIP Weekend that the woman even identified herself as a soldier but the stubborn conductor did not want to listen.

Obi said when the woman became angry and ordered the driver to park, they knew that trouble was brewing. He said the woman grabbed the conductor by his collar and the conductor threatened to beat her. He said his utterances angered the soldier who dragged him down from the vehicle and gave him the beating of his life.

2015 : Wamakko Charges APC to Protect Votes from PDP

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 29 Second

The Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has charged  All Progressive Congress(APC) members to protect their votes against ''dictatorial tendencies'' of the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP ) saying the party had already failed Nigerians.

Wamako who was speaking in Bogoro during the formal distribution  of about 2,269 empowerment items  by Hon Yakubu Dogara, member  representing  Tafawa Balewa, Dass and Bogoro Federal constituency in Bauchi State yesterday  said that Nigerians were worse off than they were four years ago before the present administration came into office.

Wamakko who was represented by the former Minister of Sports, Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir, warned the electorates to protect their votes in the forthcoming general elections because according to him, "PDP is well known for rigging that is the reason I’m  advising the electorate to come out enmass during the forthcoming polls and cast their votes and ensure that the votes  count in order to forestall any chances of rigging by other parties as APC is not known for rigging’’.

The Governor  also urged Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliations to unite and effect the kind of change they desired, pointing out that "We need not to be told of the injustice of the PDP. If we are not united, we will have problems during elections."
Wamakko who was the Chairman of the occasion maintained that, "looking for positions shouldn't cause problem among us otherwise we will be laughed at."
In his remark, the Speaker of the House of the Representatives, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal commended  Yakubu for the giant strides and commitment to the upliftment of the welfare of the people of his constituency.

He said  that he was in Tafawa Balewa  because of the late Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and his relationship with Hon Yakubu Dogara, describing him as a credible representative of not only his constituency, Bauchi State but Nigeria at large; pointing out that if his constituents failed to re-elect him, they would be doing great disservice to themselves.

According to him, "I came here not as APC member but as Speaker of the House and I came with our APC and PDP members to show solidarity to one of our reliable member whom we rely on for wise counsel."

The speaker challenged Nigerians to embrace peace irrespective of whatever kind of differences that existed between them, saying "Without peace we cannot any reasonable achievement. We must do everything possible to strengthen the bond of friendship that existed long between our   forefathers" .

Also speaking, Hon Dogara Yakubu expressed his appreciation to all those who attended his 2014 constituency empowerment project, and  charged the beneficiaries of the empowerment items distributed to make judicious use of it towards socio-economic development of the area and the state.

‘APC About to Collapse in Kogi Under Audu’

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 21 Second

Contrary to the claim by Hon. Dino Melaye in one of the national dailies that the All Progressive Congress [APC] was one big family and intact in Kogi State, a chieftain of the party, Prince Salisu Sani has disclosed that the party was about to collapse under the leadership of Prince Abubakar Audu and his cohorts.

Prince Sani disclosed this in a chat with THISDAY in Lokoja, noted that the leader of the party in the state, Prince Abubakar Audu had been romancing with the ruling Peoples’ Democratic party [PDP]  to the extent that he described Governor Idris Wada as “God sent”.

According to him, “We are surprised to read in one of the national dailies that Audu now turn around speaking through Hon. Dino Melaye who was his campaign Director General during the last governorship election to again describe the so called God sent administration as a “Beautiful Nonsense” and one which had not performed to expectation”

Sani who is also an aspirant for the House of Representatives in the forthcoming 2015 general election for Idah federal constituency under the platform of the party therefore asked the leader of the party in the state, Prince Audu and his former campaign Director General, Dino Melaye to tender apologies not just to the APC family but the entire state for misleading the people that Wada who he said was a God sent had become a “Beautiful Nonsense”.

The party chieftain who went down memory lane explained that, “in 1992 when Audu was the governor of the state under the platform of the National Republican Convention [NRC], the party lost the presidential election to the opposition and also in 2003, ANPP lost the presidential election even when he was the governor of the state under the party.

“This had shown that Audu had never had the interest of his party at heart except in his own election and the moment he is in power he will start to romance with the ruling party at the national level in order for his selfish interest to be protected by the power that be”.

To this end, Sani noted that some progressives in other parties who want to join the party and team up with APC to dislodge the ruling PDP in the forthcoming election may be afraid to join the party due the ungodly romance of Audu with the PDP and the unresolved crisis between the three major parties that gave birth to APC in the state.

He then appealed to the national Chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun to as a matter of urgency come and rescued the party from total collapse in the hand of Prince Abubakar Audu and his cohorts including Hon. Dino Melaye

Enugu in the Claws of Dictatorship?

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 35 Second

The ordeal of the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Mr Sunday Onyebuchi once more portrays the claws of tyranny into which Enugu has found itself.

While other governors preoccupy themselves with war against Ebola Virus Disease, Governor Sullivan Chime is busy prosecuting the impeachment of his deputy for the most ridiculous of reasons. Chime declared recently: “I am tired of working with him.” The more Onyebuchi tried far beyond imagination to ingratiate himself to Chime with unmatched humility, loyalty, patience, and tolerance in service, hoping that beauty could ride a tiger, the more Chime allegedly empowers his Chief of Staff, Deaconess Ifeoma Nwobodo, to met out to him the worst treatment so far to a Deputy Governor.

The psychological violence and trauma meted to Onyebuchi by Chime and his aides were such that on sighting Mrs Nwobodo arrive with the State Attorney General, Mr Anthony Anih, for interrogations at the impeachment panel last week, his blood pressure allegedly dropped astronomically and he collapsed in the court room. The most inhuman part of the manhunt is that Onyebuchi’s failing health was allegedly toasted at the Government House.
Ironically, when in 20O7, Chime was elected as the Governor of Enugu State, it was jubilation galore. Shortly after, the ugly side of Chime started rearing its head. The first was a less than contempt for the reputed father of Enugu State, Chief C C Onoh, the former governor of the old Anambra State. The disdain with which he related with the icon while he was alive, accounted in part for the rejection of the support from the Enugu State Government by Onoh family, towards his burial in 2009. The next on the hit-line was the former governor of the old Enugu State, Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo. As the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr Nwodo, an outstanding political gladiator, quickly understood the Chime complex. He therefore tried as hard as he could, to massage the ego of Chime to no avail. Nwodo narrates how, as a PDP boss and a former governor, Chime would leave him in a waiting room for hours.  The climax was that Chime allegedly connived with his fellow governors to ensure that Nwodo was ousted as the PDP boss.
To Chief Jim Nwobodo, the kind-hearted charismatic former governor of the old Anambra state, Chime allegedly menacingly revoked his land of over forty years and allegedly re-allocated same to members of the Enugu community. For the Enugu love for Nwobodo, it was difficult to fly. The story between Mr Chime and his godfather and friend of over forty years, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, the former governor of Enugu State is now narrative in betrayal and annihilation.

There was also the case of the amiable Clara Chime, the former First Lady of Enugu State. Clara was soon to realise the cruelty in Chime and tolerated unprintable inhuman treatments from Chime including alleged imprisonment and torture in a cell in the government house, Enugu.
Like a Bull in a China shop, the latest of the Chime’s fight has allegedly shifted to Senator Ike Ekweremadu, the Deputy Senate President. Even the least charitable among the Ekweremadu’s detractors acknowledge his profound humility, compassion, equanimity and fear of God. Ekweremadu, like others mentioned above, had on several occasions allegedly intervened to save Chime from a political whirlwind that would have blown him into oblivion. But Chime, like a lion who tried to devour a monkey with whose tail it clawed out of the dingy pit, has now decided to do what is believed to be his last political fight with Ekweremadu.
The bone of contention is that the governor in dictatorship candour decreed that all the members of the National Assembly from Enugu State, who are serving more two terms upwards, would not go back to the National Assembly. Ekweremadu and many others contend that in a democracy, aspirants should be allowed to contest for positions of their choice and that power resides, not in the governor, but in the people. Most people from the Enugu West Senatorial District argue that because of the ranking in the Senate, it will be fool-hardy to trade in a performing Deputy Senate President and the Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament for a fresher, Chime. In addition, unlike the office of the executive governor, the senate requires sagacity, charisma, sound human relations, and bodily presence, all which Ekweremadu possesses.

The knowledge of mythologies, history and holy books helps us in several ways. It equips us intellectually with a compass to navigate complex situations as well as a crystal ball to predict events using inferences from literatures. In the first place, wickedness serves the purpose of throwing the scoundrel up for an ultimate public opprobrium. The common trajectory of Atila the Khan of the Huns, Emperor Nero of Rome, Pharaoh Ramses of Egypt, Adolf Hitler of Germany, Joseph Stalin, Justin Bierber, Osama Bin Laden, Saddan Hussein, Idi Amin and a host of other men of cruelty shows that those who have used power in negative ways or played god had often ended in both tragedy and shame. This is an immutable law.
For instance, in the Greek mythology, Ares is regarded as the wickedest of all the Greek gods. Ares had a very difficult character, which made it practically impossible to get on with other Greek gods. We are told that during the Trojan War, other Greek gods preoccupied themselves at the war-front against the Troy, but Areswas busy having an amorous affair with Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Ares no longer attends to the needs of humanity, for he was blinded to other issues except, as his mistress would direct. Ares chose to hate and deal with mankind most ruthlessly.

Ares met his waterloo when all the Greek Titans suddenly realised that the evil gods thrive because the good gods go to sleep.  On a day, the gods held a meeting and set out to cut Ares to size.  In a frenzy of instant justice, they caught Ares with Aphrodite red-handed in their perverse sexuality. We are told that the street of Greece went agog. His mistress in a futile attempt to escape was apprehended, tortured and dispossessed of all the gold and silver she had expropriated from the State.
Those who understand the politics of Enugu, know that the quietness of the people in the face of the unrepentant acts of impunity are probably predicted on the fact that they know that their chi (God) has a way of fighting for them, cutting those who play God to size, ultimately.

Oleka writes from Enugu
