NIGERIA: Obiano Seeks Support to Boost Security

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has concluded plans to visit Lagos on September 26th, to seek support from Anambra indigenes in the state.
Specifically, the Anambra Governor would be seeking support to boost security in his state.

The Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr Nkem Okeke disclosed this while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a meeting he held with some Anambra indigenes in Lagos Thursday.

Okeke said the meeting was to sensitise Anambra indigenes on the planned visit of the governor to Lagos as well as on efforts by his administration to reposition the state, especially on his efforts on security of lives and property.
“He is coming to raise funds to support efforts in security, but there is no specific amount we are looking at.

“I am here basically to sensitise Anambra indigenes basically to tell them that the governor is coming and what they are to expect and also to request for support from them so that we can achieve the vision of making Anambra a safe place for all of us to live,” he said.

According to the deputy governor, the funds to be raised would help step up security awareness in the state.

“We want to do whatever it takes to eliminate crime and other forms of insecurity in the state.  Whatever it takes, his Excellency is willing and ready, but we need the support of everyone to help us achieve that,” Okeke said.

According to the deputy governor, those that were present at the meeting expressed their preparedness to support the state government’s efforts in eliminating criminals from the state.
“People now come to Anambra without bringing a battalion of policemen because of what this administration is doing and we need to sustain that to make sure that, the situation is sustained.

“The whole idea is that if you provide security, people would come and invest in the state and the first people that would come are the indigenes, to show that they believe in what is going on, then, foreigners would also come and invest.
“The business opportunities in the state range from agriculture, opportunity for SMEs, trade and commerce, among others,” he added.

IPMAN Condemns Attack on Filling Stations

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 36 Second

The Warri chapter of the Independent Petroleum Markets of Nigeria (IPMAN) has directed its members to open their filling stations for sale of petroleum products, saying its members were not on strike.

It said though some NUPENG members were employees of IPMAN members, the association was not consulted or "carried along" by the strikers.

The directive issued yesterday in Warri was prompted by the reported attack on some outlets by members of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Union of Nigeria (NUPENG) in an attempt to compel the marketers to support the ongoing strike by the union.

The Warri Council of NUPENG last week declared an industrial action over the reported sack of its members in the employ of Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL).
The statement by the union’s Senior Assistant General Secretary, Warri Zonal Council, Mr Otite Onohwowhohe, accused the management of Chevron of insensitivity, disrespecting agreement reached and treating the sacked workers "like slaves."

Nonetheless, it has been mum from the management of Chevron as efforts by THISDAY to get any reaction from the company were unsuccessful.

The statement last week announcing the strike by the Warri council of NUPENG claimed, “As a result of the refusal of Chevron Nigeria Limited Management to honour the communiqué of July 10th, 2014 issued at the instance of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Abuja, to resolve the industrial dispute between the union and Chevron management, the strike action that was earlier suspended is hereby resumed".

However, IPMAN warned that the NUPENG directive was not in any way binding on the independent marketers and could not, therefore, be compelled to shut their petroleum products outlets as they were not members of NUPENG.

THISDAY gathered that several filling stations had been attacked and fuel pumping gadgets forcibly removed and confiscated by the NUPENG members apparently desirous of making visible impact with its one week old strike.

However, the Chairman of IPMAN, Warri Chapter, Chief Akpos Edafevwotu, stated in Warri yesterday that members of the association were neither members of NUPENG nor in any solidarity pact with NUPENG.

Edafevwotu described the strike action as unjustified and clearly meant to inflict unnecessary hardship on motorists and members of the public particularly in the states under the Warri zone of NUPENG.

He condemned the action of members of NUPENG in the last couple of days in disrupting operations at some filling stations that were dispensing fuel to customers as NUPENG strove to make effective their strike action.

The IPMAN therefore directed its members to promptly report such meddling and interruption to the nearest police station.

Edafevwotu said, “Let me say emphatically that we are not part of the strike action embarked upon by NUPENG in protest of the refusal of Chevron to recall some of their members that were sacked by the oil company. They never consulted us and there was never a meeting to agree to embark on such strike.

“We are their employer and they needed to carry us along and if we believe in their struggle, the national secretariat and the zonal office will direct us to join. But that is not the case in this strike action by NUPENG. Instead, they are resorting to forceful compliance by removing some of my member’s pumps."

The IPMA Boss urged Delta State Government to wade into the development threatening that his members would no longer tolerate their employees disrupting their businesses under the guise of strike noting that their disagreement had to do with upstream sector of the oil industry while theirs is downstream.

“I have directed my members to report any disruption of their operations to the nearest police station. They cannot hold us into ransom. The state government should intervene now before it gets out of hand. Why should they make people to suffer unnecessarily?” he asked.

Although many filling stations had remained under lock and key on Wednesday apparently as a precaution, the statement by IPMAN might have encouraged marketers as many filling stations in Warri and adjoining Effurun were yesterday (Friday) opened to customers.

However, the mild NUPENG strike-induced fuel scarcity has apparently not affected the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS) or petrol in Warri metropolis and adjoining areas.

Read Time:2 Minute, 6 Second

Governors and Chieftains of All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday stormed Benin City, capital of Edo State to grace the birthday  of the party's National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun who marked 75 years.
Leading family members and friends to offer thanks to God at St. Paul Catholic Church, Benin City, Chief Oyegun narrated how Senator Bukola Saraki's request to fly with him to Minna saved him from an accident.

He said he and his convoy were on their way to a campaign rally for the Niger East Senatorial by-election in Niger State when Sen. Saraki asked him to join him at Illorin, but he had told the former governor that he had a large entourage.

Oyegun, who is also the first governor of Edo State told the congregation that in the end only he and three members of his entourage were able to join Sen. Saraki due to the small size of the jet, while others drove through road to Minna.

He explained that during the return journey his official car was involved in a fatal accident, leaving two of his orderlies seriously injured and hospitalised.

"God has been so good to me. I thank God for saving me from an accident", Chief Oyegun said and promised that "as chairman of APC, I will continue to be a Catholic, first and foremost".

Speaking later at a reception for guests, Imo State Governor and Chairman of Progressives Governors' Forum, Owelle Rochas Okorocha described Chief Oyegun as the political John the baptist, adding that the APC National Chairman reminded him of the biblical John the Baptist who became the forerunner of Jesus Christ.
Against this backdrop, Okorocha said victory for the APC in 2015 has been signed and sealed by the grace of God.

Also speaking, Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole prayed that APC under Oyegun would become the ruling party of Africa's most populous country, while Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola thanked Chief Oyegun for standing with him during his election, urging him to repeat the feat at the national level to enable APC achieve victory in the 2015 at the national level.

Among dignitaries at the event were Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Sen. Chris Ngige, Sen. Domingo Obende, Sen. Bukola Saraki and former Governor of Kwara State; the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, Sen. Francis Okpozo, Razaq Bello-Osagie and samson Osagie, representing Oredo and Uhunmwode/ Orhiomwon Federal Constituency respectively.

APC leaders blame economic woes on PDP

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 5 Second

IBADAN—LEADERS of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the South-West zone yesterday converged in Ibadan, alleging that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had brought more economic woes and frustrated genuine attempts by the progressive forces to bring hope to Nigerians.

They said this at the first APC South West Assembly, with prominent chieftains of the party including governors of Oyo and Osun states, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and Governor Rauf Aregbesola, the National Vice-Chairman (South-West), Pius Akinyelure in attendance.   This came as Governor Aregbesola warned that PDP was desperate to take all the states in the South West presently governed by the APC.

Aregbesola said, “PDP is determined to take our states from us. They are ruthless opposition that will do anything to deny our people of their democratic choices. If we understand this early enough, we will see the need to stop them on their track. But, if we underrate them, we will record loss.

Speaking on his victory at the polls, he said, “The actual winners, those who defeated the opposition in Osun, were the ordinary men and women, particularly women who refused to be intimidated.

They came out even in their most dreadful form. For the first time, security operatives put on masks in broad daylight in their thousands, shooting. But women came out to perform their duty. They sang against them and sent signals to them that they would not tolerate terror.

“Quickly following the women in the determination to exercise their rights were school children who always sang that people should vote for Aregbesola. It was unbelievable. They deflated the ego of the people that wanted to dominate and terrorise us. Yes, our men worked but the determination of our women and the children including artisans, drivers were high and politicians must acknowledge them. We must let people know that this is what they must do. They must refuse to be cowed, that they should vote and defend their votes. They deserve accolades for the victory of our party in the State of Osun. I will never forget them. Women that one would think wrongly are the least in a struggle like this.”

However, South West APC leaders speaking through the National Vice-Chairman (South-West), Pius Oluwole Akinyelure, said, “we cannot deceive ourselves about the economic and political woes of the ruling PDP that dim the stars of yesteryears, becloud the rainbows of today and diminish the hidden potentials of our great nation. I doubt if Nigeria has ever been faced with such a perilous future in the annals of our history as much as currently witnessed and experienced today.

“On the economic front, Nigeria has been dragged into the red light district of global affairs. On the political front, there are fears about the future considering the odious attempt to eliminate the basic principles of democracy and the lowest common factor of representative government.”

Akinyelure alleged that the PDP was promoting a retinue of rogue regimes that negated the fundamentals of the egalitarian political heritage of the South West democratic space.

“In Ekiti for instance, we witnessed the monetisation of votes and the blatant institutionalisation of violence-using state machinery. We are aware of the flagrant cases of human right violations perpetrated by some of the nation’s security apparatus. This is different from the several masked gun men that stormed the State of Osun before and on 9th of August. I must say without any contradiction that the APC leaders in Ekiti and the State of Osun fought a gracious fight. They fought a battle nurtured by ideas and ideology”, he said.

Nigeria 2015: We will arrest Jonathan if…—South-South Elders Council

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second

As build up for 2015 general elections continues to gather momentum, the South-South Chiefs and Elders Council, SSCEC International, yesterday vowed to arrest President Goodluck Jonathan, should he fails to declare interest for second term in office.

The group made the position known in Abuja during a Grand endorsement of the President for second term in office and conferment of Transformation Excellence award on the Federal Ministry of Information and other outstanding Ministries.

The Executive Chairman of the Council, Ama-Opu Senibo of Opobo Kingdom, Chief Reuben Jaja, who made the declaration on behalf of other Chiefs said the programme was designed to showcase their support for the President for serving the country right and doing the people of the country proud.

He argued that the President reserved the right to seek a second term in office in view of his performance in the last four years in the areas of education, agriculture, transport, women affairs, entertainment and other critical sectors.

Consequently, Jaja further threatened that the Council would arrest the President and compel him to run for the 2015 general elections should he ignore their call.

“Our goal is to show support to our president who has served this country right. We feel that he is qualified to run by law and by way of performance. He is doing exceedingly well, we have seen tremendous progress in our education, agriculture, transport, women affairs, youth development and entertainment and the critical sectors of our economy.

Chibok girls bag varsity scholarship

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 58 Second

Succour is on the way for Chibok girls who escaped from the Boko Haram terror group and other vulnerable children in North-East Nigeria as the American University of Nigeria (AUN) announces the formation of American University of Nigeria Foundation (AUNF) and the launch of Educate Our Girls campaign to raise funds to provide these children with full scholarships.

According to a release made available to Vanguard by officials of the AUN, Dr. Margee Ensign, AUN President, while speaking at the event said the #EducateOurGirls campaign will raise global awareness to the need to focus on the education of girls and boys in the North-East region of Nigeria and provide citizens across the globe with the opportunity to demonstrate unflinching support for the rights of girls and women to pursue their education in a safe environment.

“The world was shocked when so many innocent girls were kidnapped for wanting an education, and we are all angry that so many are still in captivity,” said Ensign. “Today, we are proud to announce the  Educate Our Girls campaign that will provide scholarships for the kidnapped girls who have escaped. We are asking the citizens of the world to put their money where their hash tags are and tangibly express their support for education and for protection of the human rights of these girls.”

The AUNF was launched tocreate greater awareness to the plight of school age children – especially girls – in Nigeria. “The Foundation launched the #EducateOurGirls campaign in September 2014 to fund scholarships for the young Nigerian girls who escaped after being kidnapped from Chibok on April 15, by Boko Haram, as well as for the girls still in captivity once released. As of September 2014, AUN has secured the funds for 11 of these girls who will start at AUN this fall.”

Expatiating further, the release stated:”It costs $5,000 per year per scholarship student. To allow for academic and personal adjustment, AUN is reserving a year of remedial education at the AUN Academy, their secondary school, for each girl. After this, they will begin their four-year college program, at the cost of $12,000 per year per girl. The initial fundraising goals are as follows: $55,000 to educate 11 girls for one year, $583,000 to educate 11 girls for five years,

$3,074,000 to educate all 58 escaped girls for five years.

“The scholarship covers all of the students’ expenses, including housing, tuition, food and counselling.

“The importance of education and the education of women in particular cannot be overstated,” said Dr. Ensign. “Education transforms lives, and improving women’s access to education and healthcare is the most important intervention a society can make towards development.”

According to a 2014 UNESCO report, “While universal youth literacy in Nigeria has almost been achieved for the richest women aged 15 to 24, their poorest counterparts will need to wait 70 years to realise this fundamental right if no active steps are taken to fight illiteracy among the most disadvantaged groups.

The education crisis in Nigeria affects all children, not just girls. There are close to 11 million children out of school in Nigeria, the most in the world. The overall literacy rate is around 50 per cent, and in the northeast, AUN’s own data point to a figure closer to 80 per cent. “All Nigerian youth deserve an education. We want to give them that chance,” she said.

Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

Trouble ensued in the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Makurdi Benue state, 3rd September, 2014 during their monthly Power Night program when two women engaged themselves in a heated fight over allegation of witchcraft. it was gathered that fight broke out when an unidentified woman who was in solemn reflection sudden jumped up, violently attacking another woman identified simply as Christy, shouting on top of her voice that it had been revealed to her that she was a witch. Despite attempt by the congregation to stop her from further confronting Christy, she held on to her, insisting that she was going to expose her witch craft before the crowd. She said ” Christy is the cause of many problems in people’s lives.

She has been destroying people’s families, enough is enough’’ the woman shouted. To the surprise of all worshipers present, the accused woman also responded violently, tearing her accuser’s cloth inside the church at the course of the scuffle. The worship session was abruptly interrupted as other worshipers intervened to bring the feud to an end. They were subsequently taken outside, apparently for peace making and counselling.

One of the members who pleaded anonymity told DailyPost that it is possible that a spirit ministered to the woman in her prayers for her to have behaved in the manner she did. ” I just believe she was under the influence of the holy ghost. She couldn’t have accused the woman falsely when they just met in church,” the church member said.Another member told DailyPost thus; ‘’The woman who said sister Christy is a witch is probably a new member because I have never seen her in this church before, so I don’t know her name’’ he said.

In response to the allegations being made by Stephen Davis about prominent Nigerian politicians being Boko Haram sponsors, coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mike Omeri, has denied hiring him as a hostage negotiator. This new report conflicts with earlier reports that Davis spent four months negotiating with Boko Haram on behalf of the Nigerian government to free the over 200 abducted Chibok school girls…

According to The Nation, Omeri released the following statement on the issue:

“For now nobody has been hired by the government to negotiate on its behalf with Boko Haram. Anytime the government decides to do so, it will make it known to the public. The government is still investigating the allegations made by the alleged negotiator. However, the government has no plan to question anybody because of those allegations made by the Australian.

Ignorance Is No Bliss by CharlyBoy

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 36 Second

Article written by Charly Boy. Read below…
Oh God! Why was I born in this neck of the woods? See how low my country has sank, demeaning our value as human beings, destroying our image as greed and corruption destroys everything we hold sacred. See how it drives the youths crazily into the uncertain life of crime, dispossessing the creative and talented youths of their dreams and discrediting their imagination. Haba, God, why? As Nigerians, what are we really good for? Were we born to be haunted and taunted?"…

I don’t know what drives us but were we created to be a sub. Like you

create two versions of something and see which one would thrive more
in the habitat it would be placed. It seems the Africans (Nigerians)
are failing the test and soon would be wiped out from existence. Why
have we remained a consumer nation, can't even produce nothing, even
the few who can are not encouraged.

We are so backward it troubles me. Even if the western world were to
wait for us for another hundred years, at this rate we will likely not
meet up. Because as a people and as a nation, we lack focus, we are so
consumed by greed that all we know how to do is compete among
ourselves in this endless corruption that we fail to see the bigger
picture.

We are obviously operating a failed political system, educational
system and whatever comes to mind. A country where literates are so
myopic and shallow minded. We are still living in the era of people
believing more in witches and wizard and do not believe in working
towards a bright future. A kill and go system that does not really
care for its people. From our so called riffraff in leadership, we are
told to be patient and always pray for good luck. Can our country
really be run by good luck?

We are so myopic that when we are confronted with one problem we talk
about it until another problem arises; we forget the old unsolved one
and begin to rant about the new problem.  It was “bring back our
girls”, now is Ebola here Ebola there. Even people with PHD were
bathing with salt water, Maggi and pepper. Lol

What is so bad is that we claim to have produced both academic and
medical doctors and yet we can’t possibly find any solution to this
bloody virus. We are begging the United States for the unapproved
serum which will not be given until 2015. We have labs that can’t
carry out experiments because the labs don’t have the required to
function well. Are our doctors even capable? On the media you hear
different stories of what’s going on while we are shielded from the
truth.

We refuse to develop ourselves so we live at the mercy of others. We
claim we are the giant of Africa but there is little or nothing we can
do for other smaller African countries. How can we, when we have not
been able to do anything for ourselves.

We always think our ignorance is an excuse to the way we live and what
happens to us, is it actually ignorance or stupidity? Our ignorance
will not deliver us and it is no excuse to whatever happens to us.

Are we not supposed to be responsible for ourselves? Are we going to
keep depending on other nations for our security and safety?

Where is our pride as a people and as individuals? We get mouth but we
no get anything. People weh get mouth na people weh get evidence of
substance. Sometimes you don’t have to speak, what you have created
speaks for you.

Until we realize that our problems are beyond rants, curses and
prayers, then can we be a step towards finding a solution.

Except we want to be proved as a failed state/race would we remain in
this pathetic state of existence. I’m sure I’m not the only one who
knows that in Africa we are just existing and not living. The world
has since evolved. Abegi.
