Aftermath of Attah’s bombshell –Mass exodus hits umuana, bassey camp for Akwaibom 2015

Ahead of the 2015 governorship election in Akwa Ibom State,  the camps of the duo of Umana Okon Umana and  Bassey Albert, both  of Uyo senatorial district ,struggling for the plum job  of Governor against the peoples resolve to support power shift to Eket senatorial district are already experiencing massive rejection and abandonment by their supporters, who are reportedly leaving in droves.
This is coming days after a reception the duo organized at Asan Ibibio grounds,  under the guise of elders of the Ibibio ethnic nationality, in honour of the former governor of the state, Obong (Arc) Victor Attah.
Sources close to both camps  have it that since the pronouncement in support of power shift to Eket senatorial district by Former Governor Attah, at the event, the duo of Albert and Umana have not had it easy, as they are striving day and night to convince the people that Attah never meant to endorse zoning.
Upon our findings, a key supporter of Bassey Albert who does not want his name on print said it was disheartening and embarrassing that they were fooled of Obong Attah’s support for a Governor of Uyo senatorial extraction, by their principal, only to discover that the former governor will be firm and truthful.
Also a visibly angry supporter of Umana Okon Umana, who simply gave his name as Ephraim Ekong, said he was disappointed that Umana could mislead them into believing the former governor was not comfortable with having a governor from the Eket senatorial district of the state.
Obong Victor Attah during his speech, penultimate Friday said ' consequential logic requires that Uyo  and Ikot Ekpene Senatorial Districts having taken shots at the governorship of the State, it expected that Eket District should produce the next Governor….'

It is widely reported that Albert and Umana now whins in regret of ever sponsoring the event, as it has caused them the support they previously enjoyed, even as desperate attempts by the duo to misrepresent the elder statesman’s position on zoning of governorship in the state to Eket senatorial district, has been widely rebuffed by their supporters, who now say they have heard from the horse’s mouth.
With the recent development, it could be said that the reign of lies, blackmail and deceit against the Eket senatorial district’s governorship bid is gravitating to an end, as our reporters noted that the campaign offices belonging to the duo of Umana and Albert, which used to be a beehive of activities has now become a ghost of itself.
Efforts to speak to the Director Generals of their campaign groups were unsuccessful. And as expected, they may still be nursing brunts of the fatal loss and rejection a reception they organised was causing them.

Why KCee Denied His Wife! The Full Gist

0 0
Read Time:57 Second

Now here’s the real gist about why KCee denied his wife on the widely watched show, The Juice with Toolz. During the period of the interview, KCee and his wife, Ijeoma Okonkwo were already separated and Ijeoma was already living in Germany with their two kids.

According to a source, Ijeoma and KCee began to have problems shortly after their marriage when every bird in town was singing to IJ’s ears that her husband was already back in the hands of his former Nollywood lover. This made Ijeoma quit the marriage and that was one of the main reasons he denied them on The Juice, the source stated.

However there’s an interesting side of the story, because Ijeoma is back in Nigeria and YES back to her husband’s house. She recently added another year, and KCee bought her a brand new 2014 Toyota Camry car to mark her special day. The car will be the second the singer will be buying for her in the last 3 years.

You will recall that KCee proposed to her with a customised 2010 Honda Ridgeline.

Dangers of Pre-Marital Sex

‘Dangers of Pre-Marital Sex’

Being a Seminar Presented by Mrs Ada Eze to the St. Pauls Catholic Parish Umuodagu Ntu Youths during Their  Youth Week 18th-23rd  August 2014

Pre-marital sex is referred to as sexual relation between two or more people prior to marriage. The meaning has shifted to all sexual relations a person had before a legal marriage.

Alternative terms for pre-marital sex include:

– Non-Marital sex.

– Young/Adolescent sex.

– Young-Adult sex.

Pre-marital sex can take the form of; – lesbianism, homosexuality, incest, masturbation, bestiality among others.

Today illicit sex is associated with millions of youths who are unaware of the dangers of pre-marital sex. Instead of youths to worship God with their precious time, they waste their time committing sin and destroying their future.

Ecclesiastes 12: 4 – “Remember now thy creator in days of thy youth while the evil days come not, nor the days draw nigh when thou shall say I have no pleasure in them”.

How/Why People Get Involved in Pre-Marital Sex

People find themselves in areas where lifestyle of boarder on committing sin. Places like the ghetto/slums or areas where there are no strict moral values, most of the time form part of the environment where youths learn evil ways fast. Therefore, things like smoking, rape, stealing pickpocketing, pre-marital sex, having girlfriends are some of the ridiculous practices seen in this kind of places.

Pre-marital sex also thrives in mixed schools. Having a lot of girls clustering around, send evil messages with peer groups encouraging one to have sex with as many girls as possible with the assurance that there will be no harm.

1Corinthians 16:9 “For a great door and effectual is opened unto me and there are many adversaries” –KJV.

Another reason young people indulge in pre-marital sex is their great curiosity to explore what sexual activity is all about. They do this without considering the damaging consequences. Here it may take the form of casual sex with one of the partners seeking to experience sex.

Cohabitation breeds sexual immorality. This has to do with couples living together in a long term relationship without marriage. Examples of people that fall into this category are betrothed couples who engage in sexual activity before the anticipated marriage.

Studies reveal that people who cohabit find it difficult to marry for obvious reasons. If that is the case, the question is why young people still cohabit?

It must be stated here also that the consequences of cohabitation is life-threatening and therefore should be avoided.

Consequences of Premarital Sex

Satan has caused much damage to the youths making them to commit fornication. Fornication is pre-marital sex. Damage which could not be repaired has been inflicted on young promising persons and the have to live with it for the rest of their lives.

God knows that there are dangers in pre-marital sex that is why He wants us to flee from youthful lust 2Timoty 2:22 “Flee youthful lusts but follow righteousness, faith, charity, and peace with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart”.

Sex is a powerful force that can destroy if not used properly. Like atomic power, sex is the most powerful creative force given to man. When atomic power is used correctly, it can create boundless energy, when it is used in the wrong way it destroys life. Sex is the same kind of powerful force. Sex is the gift from God to give us the greatest pleasure to help in creating deep companionship with one’s spouse and for procreation of the next generation. But if you play with this powerful force outside the bounds of marriage, it destroys you and those close to you.

– Sexual activity for young people arrests their psychological, social and academic development. Studies show that when young people engage in pre-marital sex, their academic performance declines and their social relationships with family and friends deteriorate. This is because adolescents are too immature to deal with the explosive sex drive and it tends to dominate their lives.

– Majority of women cannot enjoy sex outside the bonds of Marriage. Pre-marital sex usually takes place sneaking around in hidden places, dealing with the fear of being caught, the fear of pregnancy and feelings of guilt. All these worrisome factors undermine pleasure in premarital sex most especially in women.

– Virginity is to be given to the most important person in your life – the person you committed to stay forever in marriage. Your virginity is the most precious thing you have to your spouse. Once you lose it nothing in the world can bring it back.

Spiritual Effects of Pre-marital Sex

– It is a sin – 1Thessalonica 4:3 (for this is the will of God even your sanctification that you should abstain from fornication)

– 1Cor. 6:9 – No fornicator will enter into the kingdom of God.

– Colossians 3:5-6 – Fornicators attract the anger of God against themselves. It is a dangerous thing to fall into the hands of God.

Deuteronomy 22:13-21 – Penalty of fornication is death.

Matthew 5:32 – The sin of fornication is the only ground on which a man should divorce his married wife. Fornication is a very terrible sin as it affects all the body.

– Fornication brings more sin.

Most pre-marital sex ends up in pregnancy, sickness abandonment or sale of babies. The rate of abortion has increased because of increase in pre-marital sex. Involving in pre-marital sex is a sin of its own but committing abortion is murder. Almost all today’s youth must have committed murder before reaching age 25. Some of them abandon their babies in dustbins, gutters and other public places which is an increase to their original sin of fornication. Some secretly sale their babies to ready buyers who use such babies for rituals, or resale them to wealthy couples who could not bear their own children.

– It creates an ungodly soul tie

A soul tie is an agreement one enters with another that creates a special bond between two people. Soul ties are common and exist everywhere – husband and wife, parent and children, teacher and student, pastors and church members, employer and employees. Sex is not just a causal fun as most people think and take it to be. It is much more than that, it involves blood. The Bible says “Life is in the blood” Lev.17:14.

When you have sex with a person you have given a part of your life to that person and in return the person has given you a part of his own life in the spirit realm. In the spirit realm, two of you have become one. You start to share things in common. That is why disease, sickness, demons and many things and many things pass through during sexual intercourse. In addition, you have just created“a soul tie” between you and the person involved. Since God does not permit pre-marital sex, it becomes an“ungodly tie” in the sight of God. That is why some girls find a special liking or memory on the day of dis-virginity, the blood that flows out that day becomes the blood of the covenant or agreement. Genesis 34 Shechem the prince of the land of Hivite committed fornication with Dinah the daughter of Jacob. The soul of Shechem cleaves unto Dinah. First it was lust, and then came love, yet it was ungodly

– It fragmentize your soul

Since sexual intercourse creates soul ties, each person you have sex with you have given part of your heart or soul in the spiritual realm. That is why people who were promiscuous before settling down for marriage find it difficult settling down at all because their soul has been divided; always thinking of their relationships with their previous partners thus making it impossible for them to settle down for marriage. If a person has slept with a thousand persons in his life, his love, heart and several other things has been shared with these thousand persons. A close look at the society shows that wayward people find it difficult to have a fulfilled marriage life because they have shared their life with several people.

Most promiscuous people are involved in extramarital sex. They are never satisfied with one person just for no reason, always looking for their lost soul. It is dangerous engaging in pre-marital sex because it can affect your marriage in future.

– It passes demons to you

This is perhaps the most worrisome part of pre-marital sex. Demons and other problems gain entrance into your body through pre-marital sex.

1 Corinthians 6:16 “know ye not that he which is joined to a harlot is one body? For two saith He shall be one flesh. Have not heard how a serpent that was in another person was transferred to another in the course of sex. It passes demons to your generation. Any sin that becomes a habit is iniquity.

– It is a sin against your own body

Other sins are outside the body except the sin of fornication, 1Corinthians 6:18.

Fornication has the capacity of doing the flowing to you:

* You lose confidence.

* Diseases, sicknesses take over you.

* Your relationship with your family becomes unstable and lying sets in.

Pre-marital Sex Is Lust

Love is from God. It gives unconditionally and it can wait. Lust is from Satan. It is selfish and wants immediate gratification. Any man that loves you will never demand sex from you as a proof of your love for him. Love is patient, is long suffering and endures.

1John 4:7 Beloved let us love one another for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knowth God.

Many young people today have the spirit of Ammon 2nd Samuel 13:12-14. Beware!

Other Dangers of Pre-marital Sex

* Premature parenthood

* It makes you marry the wrong person who may not be supportive, friendly or compatible.

* Rejection, abandonment

* Infertility

* It kills your vision

Everybody that was involved in pre-marital sex in the Bible suffered punishment. Genesis 34: 26-27 and they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house and went out. The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.

2nd Samuel 12:29 the servants of Absalom slew Ammon on the order of Absalom for raping his sister Tamah.

Avoidance/Prevention/Advice

The only way to avoid the dangers of pre-marital sex is to abstain from it. Sex education has suggested the use of condom but statistics has shown that condom has failed in stopping dangers of illicit sex. Condom cannot stop the passage of demons during sexual intercourse. Our youths have taken pre-marital sex as a normal thing and a way of life. I want to sound this note of warning that it is devils device to destroy you people. Hear what the Bible say in Proverbs 14:12 there is a way that seemeth unto a man is right but the end is death

* Disassociate yourself from immoral/ungodly peer group.

* Try not to be idle.

* Beware of the type of film you watch.

* Make the Bible your closest companion and pray always.

* Take a personal decision to start living a life of purity and God will back you up.

* Mind what you drink – refrain from alcohol.

Minister of God Urges Christians to Give Alms

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 8 Second

The minister of God in charge of the Restoration Church also known as the Miracle Galore Ministries in Enugu State Pastor Ifeanyi Okpe has enjoined Christians to cultivate the spirit of giving alms to their fellow human beings, especially to those they are better than. The preacher stated this on Sunday 7 September, 2014 while delivering his sermon on the topic ‘The Power of Gift’.

Taking his Bible reading from the book of proverbs chapter 18:16, he read: ‘A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men. Pastor Ifeanyi who sees the power of gift as enormous, defined it as the ability to put a smile on the face of your neighbour as well as the expression of God’s love towards mankind – John3:16, saying that gift cannot come without love.

Pastor Ifeanyi who outlined three types of gifts which include spiritual, physical and church gift as well as its benefits said the sacrifice that will bear fruits is very difficult to execute but if executed it will lead to greater opening of doors.

He also charged his hearers to begin to put smile on the face of people so that God will put a smile on their own faces and enjoined them to ask God to give them the grace to be givers

I’m sure of winning the race, says Olejeme

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 36 Second

Chairman, Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Dr. Ngozi Olejeme weekend declared that she would break the jinx and emerge as the first elected female governor in Nigeria.

Addressing party faithful, community leaders, youths and women in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, Olejeme said her governorship ambition was virtually signed, sealed and delivered.

Promising to alter the political arithmetic in the state, Olejeme said “I am prepared for the 2015 governorship race”.

“God has programmed a woman to occupy the Delta State governorship seat in 2015. It is a mandate from God. He is going to put a woman on that seat come May 29, 2015. He will stop at nothing to ensure that I win the primaries and the 2015 governorship election”.

Stressing that what a man can do, a woman can do better, Olejeme said at the critical moment, other aspirants would support her.

“No shaking. Other aspirants are my brothers. I respect the men but when the chips are down, they will support me”.

What remained, according to the NSITF boss was her inauguration.

Olejeme who also reflected on the roads taken, the paths not explored, what need to be done and her place in the road ahead, promised to manage the wealth of the state efficiently.

“We will end this journey in victory in 2015. We will add value to the state. We will make Delta State better. We will provide sound education, basic health care facilities, potable drinking water, efficient transport, urban and rural connection facilities and other basic services” she promised.

Armed with the right statistics and information on the needs of the people, Olejeme reaffirmed her stance to ensure that numerous Deltans are employed.

Olejeme who was in Delta Central to map out strategies for the forthcoming elections met with PDP stakeholders from Delta Central political zone and You and I Coordinators in the 25 local government areas.

In a related development, the political atmosphere in Delta State at the weekend became charged as prominent Urhobo leaders named the Chairman of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, Dr. Ngozi Olejeme as their choice for the 2015 governorship election.

“Olejeme remains the most credible candidate from Delta North. She is a reliable leader and has all it takes to lead Delta State to success. ”the leaders said.

Reading from a prepared text on behalf of Uvwie   leaders, Comrade Chidi Udensi said Olejeme handling of the affairs of NSITF was an indication that she would better the lot of Deltans if elected governor.

“Olejeme has the pedigree required to make a good governor. If she could diligently develop NSITF, a fit that has been commended by political and economic leaders in Nigeria and abroad, she should be given the opportunity to use her wealth of experience to lead the state to the Promised Land”

They urged Delta North political and community leaders to unite, set aside their political differences and support Olejeme.

They also appealed to Itsekiri, Ijaw and Isoko leaders to support her.

“We are aware of other aspirants vying for nomination in the PDP, particularly Urhobo sons.

Responding, Olejeme promised to address Urhobo interest in the next political dispensation.

“You will have a say in the running of government. It will be a government of the people, by the people and for the people” she promised.

In attendance were Chief Udensi, Ighomrore Tony, Obilobi Joseph, John Uyarogho, Patience Onokeate, Kingsley Abugewa, Patricia Idjerhe, Dafe Obakponuta, Emmanuel Taire, Ejoke Idesoh, Ighomrore Victor, Charity Ileleji and Anthony Emewakeme.

Others include Chief Famous Enuiroro, Chief Queen Ologitere, Chief Kate Esigie, Ejiro Esuovwa, Igho Oruke, Chief Michael Eshenake, Moses Emabamike, Success Satini, Frank Abugewa, Wilson Jokoh, Dada Alamudo and Elohor Kimini.

Meanwhile, top political leaders in Ughelli South Local Government Area Friday took a decision to mobilize their people for the chairman of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Dr. Ngozi Olejeme.

In a meeting with Olejeme in Otu Jeremi, headquarters of Ughelli South LGA, the leaders said they could not afford to stand by and not support a worthy cause.

“We believe this can further benefit us the more having seen what she has been able to do for us under the able and achieving administration of President Goodluck Jonathan” former vice chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Area, Chief Francis Aguonigho said.

Using such indices as network of influence, state wide acceptability, human and material resources and others, the leaders said Olejeme’s governorship was an idea whose time had come.

They also reaffirmed their position on power shift come 2015, praising the aspirant for her efforts at charting a new course for the state.

“She has the ability to run an administration that will carry every interest along. She has a well-articulated programme”.

Olejeme in her response commended the leaders for endorsing her.

“I am humbled by the confidence reposed in my leadership. By the Grace of God, we will advance toward our vision of a united, prosperous and peaceful Delta State. I will provide quality leadership for all”.

She also promised to mobilize the greater majority for development.

“We will create stability through the promotion of harmonious ethnic co-existence. We will give our elders a pride of place. We will provide good roads, water and employment. We will revitalize state industries and attract more industries. We will give security attention” she added.

Ikimi, Ribadu and Politics of defection By Theophilus Ilevbare

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 21 Second

In recent weeks the All Progressive Congress(APC) has been rocked with a tidal wave of defection of a founding member in Chief Tom Ikimi and the party’s 2011 presidential candidate, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu to the party Nigerians loathe but can’t vote out of power at the centre, the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).  Ikimi’s grievance with the APC hierarchy stems from how he was barred from contesting the party’s chairmanship position.

The ease with which politicians decamp and recamp(return to a party one has left in the past) – the latest addition to Nigeria’s political lexicon – erodes any shadow of doubt if any ideological basis exists for much of what goes on in Nigeria’s political landscape. Defection has become the trade in stock of many politicians who have found such canvassing phrases as “there is no party that is exclusively for the good people or for the bad people,” reminding us of the sameness of the two major political parties as basis for cross carpeting.

Close observers of unfolding political events were not jolted by Chief Ikimi’s official resignation of his membership of the APC, after many weeks of withdrawal from party activities without disclosing his next political destination. His antecedents have shown he has no particular conviction. His political sojourn has seen him traversed the defunct APP, ANPP, ACN, PDP. The former Foreign Affairs Minister was a founding member of the APC. He was instrumental in the alliance that metamorphosed into the mega opposition party. It is only a matter of time before he recamps to the PDP. He has already expressed his readiness to join the ruling party and bring his wealth of experience to bear when members of the ruling party’s BoT, including Chief Tony Anenih and National Vice Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, led by the PDP National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, paid Ikimi an august visit.

Indeed, Ikimi and Ribadu, like every other politician and Nigerian, have every right to exercise their freedom of association with any political party in the country, but it should be consistent with the ideology and principle that defines the character of the politician and his political party.

However, the manner Chief Tom Ikimi and other founding members of the party like Alhaji Attahiru Bafawara, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Brig-Gen Buba Marwa (rtd), Mr Marcus Gundiri among others who helped to nurture the APC to mega status, have drifted to the PDP calls for concern and genuine fears for the future of the progressive party. When such party stalwarts dump the APC in droves, it is an indication that Bola Tinubu, who prides himself as the sole financier of the party, regrettably, is not upholding democratic principles in the affairs of his party. If the APC retains and wins more seats or otherwise in 2015, the party takes the credit, if not the APC will pay the price for his highhandedness. The buck stops with him. This is the party Nigerians are looking up to as an alternate platform to wrestle power from the PDP.

What shall we say of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu? He once described the PDP as a disaster and a total failure in his heyday in the APC. In the weeks leading up to the PDP governorship primaries for Adamawa state bye-election, the former anti-corruption czar joined the PDP, the only party he thinks on whose platform can make him realise his ambition to hold elective office. These days, he regales us with tales of the sameness of PDP and APC. He was quoted as saying ‘there is no party that is exclusively for the good people or for the bad people’ That Ribadu has taken a walk from the APC has raised all sort of personality and ideological issues particularly as it affects young Nigerians who hitherto looked up to such political figures for some sort of mentorship.

Consequently, many have called Ribadu’s character into question, especially those who were cynical about the manner he discharged his duties as EFCC Boss. He seem to have acted in character that is consistent with other Nigerian politicians even if his ‘intolerant’ and ‘ruthless’ stand against corruption gave him a garb of incorruptibility. Since he joined the murky waters of Nigeria’s politics, he has become a turncoat-in-waiting. Indeed, Ribadu the politician is different from Ribadu the crime fighter who once sat atop Nigeria’s foremost anti-graft agency.

Has Ribadu lost faith and confidence in the APC for allegedly selling out in the 2011 general elections to the PDP Goodluck Jonathan candidacy? If truly Ribadu was sacrificed by his own party whose attitude to winning the election was at best casual, as Ikimi submitted in his lengthy missive to Bola Tinubu, who sold out the party? Could it be that Ribadu’s heart and soul has never been with the APC since then? Has he been hobnobbing with PDP politicians all the while? Or maybe he thought to himself, if the party could sell out at the eleventh hour in 2011, there is nothing stopping the APC from repeating such this time?

Essentially, nothing separates a politician in party A from another in party B. The current wave of impeachment blowing across the country is yet another indication that politicians do not have any genuine intention to serve the people. They seek personal elevation and gains to quench their insatiable greed for power. It is this brand of politics that has thrown up charlatans in political offices and the present leadership bankruptcy in the country.

Elsewhere, lifetime commitments to political parties and ideologies are made that even transcends to generations unborn. Political parties have clearly defined principles that differentiate them from other parties.

Nigerian politicians suffer from compulsive obsessive disorder to occupy political office and will stop at nothing; defecting from one party to another, sponsoring terrorism, blackmail, cultism, rigging and all what not to clinch power. Their desperation to occupy political office and lack of political character cannot deepen democracy. To them, principle should never be an issue on the front burner, ideology and manifestoes mean nothing on the premise of the fallacy that the end justifies the means.

Rivers APC commends Gov. Amaechi on strategies to eliminate Ebola virus

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 57 Second

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State (APC) has expressed satisfaction with the way and manner the Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi Administration has decisively tackled the Ebola outbreak in the State, urging people not to panic as the situation is under control. “Governor Amaechi did not only declare war on Ebola but has also stepped up and sustained the war against the disease. We wish to commend him and his administration on this while at the same time appealing to people of the State, including visitors, to fully cooperate with the State authorities on measures rolled out to check the spread of the disease,” Rivers APC said in a statement issued Monday in Port Harcourt by the State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.

The party condemned the surreptitious way the Ebola Virus Disease was imported into Rivers State late last month by a diplomat and the awkward way late Dr. Iyke Sam Enemuo decided to treat his Ebola patient in a hotel without reporting the case to the appropriate quarters for immediate action.

“Inasmuch as we do not wish to waste time on spilt milk, the seriousness with which Governor Amaechi intervened to arrest the situation gladdens our heart as a political party. As a visionary and focused Government, even before the Ebola outbreak in Rivers State, the Amaechi administration had released the sum of N300 million to the State Ministry of Health to use in tackling the virus in case it eventually arrived the State. Apart from this, the Rivers State Government through the Ministry of Health planned ahead by approving a temporary quarantine site in Oduoha, Emohua Local Government Area of the State,” Rivers APC said.

The party also commended State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker, and his Technical Team for proving that the APC Government in Rivers State is very concerned about the health and security of Rivers people.

It equally expressed appreciation for the assistance rendered by the World Health Organization (WHO), Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) – also known as Doctors Without Borders – the American Embassy and the Federal Government to ensure that drastic measures are put in place to tackle and eliminate Ebola from Rivers State and the entire country.

The State APC noted with satisfaction that the Rivers State Government in its determination to eliminate this unfortunate scourge has partnered with the World Health Organization. “In this regard, the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, and the Country Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), Mr. Rui Vaz, have pledged to work together and join hands in battling the Ebola outbreak in Rivers State. Governor Amaechi and Mr. Vaz made the joint resolve after a meeting in Government House, Port Harcourt. Governor Amaechi assured the WHO Country Representative that his government would do everything possible to contain the disease in the state in collaboration with the World Health body,” Rivers APC said.

The party added that “apart from these steps, the Governor on 28th August, 2014, made a public broadcast to the people of Rivers State on ways and means of checking Ebola and has had several meetings and interactions with various segments of the society towards fashioning out the best strategies to exterminate the disease from the State. Some of these strategies include the mobilization of all organs of governance in the State, the religious, traditional, inter-government organs, etc. While addressing these groups recently in the Government House, the Governor called on religious and traditional leaders that include the Muslim Community in Rivers State to collaborate and work with the State Government to contain the Ebola virus in the State. Amaechi also warned against stigmatization of people suspected to be infected with the Ebola virus. He said the Rivers State Government was doing its best to contain and eliminate the disease in the state. LAGOS — A governorship aspirant in Lagos State, under the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, has said the compelling need to take the developments recorded  by former governors of the state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the incumbent, Mr. Raji Fashola, SAN, to another level, informed his ambition to govern the state in 2015.

inauguration: Lagos State APC gubernatorial aspirant, Ambode, acknowledging cheers after inaugurating his campaign office in Lagos, yesterday.

He insists his ambition has no ethnic colouration, stressing that the various ethnic nationalities in the state will be carried along if he picks his party nomination and wins the 2015 governorship election in 2015.

This came as Chief Imam of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Alhaji Abdulhakeem AbdulLateef, dismissed claims that the Muslim community would not work for the victory of Ambode at the gubernatorial primaries and governorship election.

Ambode spoke, yesterday, in Lagos, at the commissioning of his campaign secretariat and inauguration of campaign committees in all the local governments across the state.
According to him: ‘’This campaign has no coloration, so we are carrying everyone along. Whether you are Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba or Urhobo, you have a place in this project. We are one. We want to create a new level of leadership that will challenge the status quo to ensure that our people are freed from poverty.

“The work we are going to do is for Lagos State. I want our people to do it selflessly without recourse to monetary gains. We have been working on this project for a long time. We are here to present banners to all local government areas in the state to enable our people carry out house-to-house campaign in the 377 wards in the state.

‘’We have succeeded in bringing all the legacy groups together. These groups are going to work for our victory in their various local government areas. The reason for setting up these committees is to give governance back to the communities. The standards set by our leader, Tinubu and the actualisation of that dream by Governor Fashola, has to be taken to another level to ensure continuity. Nobody was coerced to come here. The population of the people here shows you the direction the state is headed to.’’

The blind see again in Niger community, courtesy of corps member

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 57 Second

A journey to Abuchi Padama Community in Suleja Area Council, of Niger State is certainly not for the faint-hearted.

This is more so for a first time visitor as he or she will do well to prepare to be confronted by such challenges that are sure to task him both physically and mentally, a test to his endurance similar to what lies in wait for a participant in a Gulder Ultimate Search. This is because Abuchi community could easily be mistaken for a jungle, especially given the hilly and indeed rough terrain of the only access road to the area.

Dr. Ebeogu attending to a patient

In fact, during Vanguard Metro’s recent visit to the place, there were clear indications that civilization was alien to the community, with basic  social amenities absent  due to decades of neglect by successive governments, both at local and state levels. But the most glaring and disturbing, in VM’s estimation, was the total lack of modern health care treatment for the medically distressed.

That was until recently when Dr. Wisdom Ogochukwu Ebeogu, a participant in the current National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, programme, did the unusual by taking free eye care services to the community. Tagged: “Niger Save Sight Project”,  the young corps member said the humanitarian gesture  was initiated as part of her contribution to the Community Development Service, CDS,  requirement of the NYSC.

The Niger Save Sight Project comprised a free eye screening, cataract surgery, distribution of eye glasses, blood sugar and high blood pressure tests for the community.

Dr. Ebeogu, an optometrist and a Batch A corps member serving at the General Hospital Suleja, said as a professional: “I felt that through this project I can reach out and meet the eye care needs of the people. When I came to Suleja, I decided to take this humanitarian service down to this remote and neglected community because the people can hardly come to town for their eye treatment”.

She said her target was to reach out to only 1,000, but more persons came knocking for the service.

“As part of my CD pogramme, I felt that I will make more impact in the community by providing free eye screening and surgery to the people as well as educating them on healthy living. I went with a team of other eye care providers to assist in checking the eyes of those afflicted, conducting evaluation for them and providing free medication for those diagnosed with ailment, including reading glasses to those who needed them. For those that have cataract, we will carry out a free cataract surgery. We will report such patients to the secondary hospital before they are referred for surgery at the General Hospital Suleja eye Centre,” she said.

Absence of government
Decrying the absence of government in the area, she said she sacrificed her comfort to make the project a reality. “The first time I came for community assessment, the ruggedness of the terrain made accessment to the place very difficult. And even on getting to the community, I had language and culture barriers to contend with. But I was very determined to overcome all these.

Avoidable blindness
Dr. Ebeogu who frowned at the increasing rate of avoidable blindness in the country said: “I believe that blindness is not a curse. The people here suffer from reversible blindness that can be taken care of by either inspection or medication.”

She advised her fellow corps members to see the service year as an opportunity to reach out to people, particularly those that do not have gainful means of livelihood.
The Chairman, Suleja Local Government Area, Yunus Adamu London, represented by the house leader in the Suleja local government, Abdullahi Abubakar Balla, expressed gratitude to Egbogu for her hard work and commitment to serving her father land in this manner.

“We thank God Almighty for this kind of programme because we have never witnessed such in this community in the past. We are very grateful to the NYSC, more especially the corps member who initiated it. We are confident that this singular action will make a huge impact in reducing the number of people going blind in the state.

“About 99.5 per cent of the villagers are farmers, but due to the awareness created and the importance they attached this programme, no one went to farm today. The District Head, women, children, youth are all present. As a government, we promise to encourage the youth corps members by providing them healthy accommodation. As time goes on, we will provide them jobs, irrespective of their state of origin,” said the London.

Giving back to humanity
Speaking on the rationale behind the project, the representative of the head of medical team from Suleja General Hospital and Head of Ophthametrics Department, Suleja Eye, Dr. Kingsman Alozie, said the project was in line with the Federal Government’s Vision 2020  aimed at eradicating all avoidable blindness. He noted that the project will fish out people who have cataract so that they can be referred for surgery.

“It is good to give back to humanity what providence has given you and that is what Dr. Wisdom is doing here today.  She has shown some sense of responsibility to the rural people. At this point in time, she has brought the services so that they can benefit. I am impressed with the team which cuts across corps members, doctors, scientists, nurses, volunteers. No man could have done it alone.  This is one of the youth corps members who have shown that they can initiate ideas that can lift some communities from the bondage of illness and poverty.  Other corps members should emulate her, even if it is not in the medical profession but in other areas,” he advised.

The representative of the NYSC, Mrs. Jane Bello, commended the corps member for her foresight and determination to bringing succor to the less privileged people. “The NYSC is happy with what she has done because she has made us proud by giving sight to the blind. For us, eye is the window through which the whole body sees and with this programme, I am sure many potential blind persons will no longer become blind.

Many sponsors and supporters
The Project Coordinator, Emmanuel Agada, said the project, which though was personal, attracted many sponsors and supporters because of the importance they attached to it. He explained that the project was aimed at helping the underprivileged persons in the society to have a sense of belonging, despite their neglect by government.

One of the beneficiaries of the project, Ibrahim Garba, expressed appreciation to Doctor Egbogu for her kind gesture.
The project was sponsored by the Suleja Emirate Council, local government, General Hospital management, Nigerian Optometric Association, Niger State  Free Eye Care Programme, and a volunteer team of eye care professionals
