Marwa Will Do A Great Job At NDLE

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 27 Second

For those of us in the Diaspora, there is a need for absolute caution on how we yield our platforms for some felonious elements who masquerade as business or political leaders to do some hatchet jobs, either intentionally or inadvertently.

I say this regarding a post on Facebook by a fellow Ibadan-man based in the USA. The post came 24 hours after the newly appointed Chairman/CEO of NDLEA, Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa took over at the anti-drug law enforcement agency on Monday when he read the riot act to drug barons and traffickers that with him in the saddle, they will have the NDLEA to contend with if they do not stop their illicit trade.

That is typical of Marwa with hindsight on what he did with ‘Operation Saki’ and ‘Operation Sweep’ against criminal elements as a military administrator in Borno and Lagos States, respectively.

The Facebook post to me is suspicious, more so that it is laden with falsehood and fiction. It is a known fact that Marwa was harassed by former President Obasanjo, using the EFCC when he wanted to vie for the Presidency in 2006/2007. And that was where it all ended. But to claim he forfeited properties in Europe and America is ridiculous. I will like such evidence produced if there was anything like that. This could only have happened under a plea bargain or upon the prosecution. And from my enquiries so far, nothing like that happened, as I even got to know he was later exonerated by the same agency after no infraction was established against him. Otherwise, he could have been prosecuted long ago. We have also read many such previous plea bargains in the public domain, as EFCC usually makes it public. None such was made public by EFCC to date.

I have gone this far, to urge our fellow Diaspora that we should only yield our platforms to facts-based narratives rather than deriding our reputation and presenting ourselves as pensionaries.

For a man who worked for two years along with others to develop a blueprint on how to end drug abuse in Nigeria as Chairman, of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse, PACEDA, I do not think anyone is more qualified for the task of repositioning NDLEA as him. For a two-time governor to accept such a task should be commended rather than the unnecessary attacks.

I have followed Gen. Marwa’s trajectory of public service as Military Attaché, Nigerian Embassy, Washington DC, USA, Defence Attaché, United Nations, New York, as well as former Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa and the Kingdoms of Lesotho and Swaziland. In addition to being a Military Administrator in Borno and Lagos States, his records of performance anywhere he goes has been excellent. As such, we should give him all the support and cooperation needed to succeed in his assignment.

My take and opinion, ONLY!

Nigeria’s Democratic Euphoria is over!

0 0
Read Time:8 Minute, 57 Second

The elation over Nigeria’s experiment in democracy is over. Reality is once again at our doorstep with the worrying questions about our future – the calibre of those running (or ruining) the country, security, impunity of those in power, marginalisation, restructuring, economic slump, poor governance structure, etc.

Why is our nation, home to brilliant minds, rich traditions, rich in natural and mineral resources and centuries of wisdom, withering in poverty while most other countries rapidly move ahead of us?

Why are we, as a nation, drifting purposelessly, without direction or vision? Are our current systems, economic, political, and social, limiting us in this era of intense global competition among nations?

Can we, the people of Nigeria, afford to watch while barefaced official corruption, political volatility, rudderless administration in the states, flagrant profligacy, tribalism, religious intolerance, maladministration and administrative lapses, overloaded and corrupt judiciary and cumbersome civil service, and unbelievable personal greed demoralise our society and negate the advances we seem to have made so far? Why have we been getting a raw deal from our various leaders and governments over a very long period of our existence as a nation?

Like all nations, Nigeria too has changed. Unfortunately, the fatherland that we see today is not what we desired for our country to be. Much of the change, especially over the last two decades, has caused severe anxiety amongst a lot of us, to the extent of desperation and sadness. However, haven’t we haplessly and helplessly watched on, either choosing to compromise our integrity or insulating ourselves from the forces that threaten our society?

Nigeria is at present assailed, besieged and afflicted with multiple deficiencies of the following (not in order of any importance)

  • Insecurity and fear.
  • Endemic and brazen corruption, impunity, and indiscipline.
  • Infrastructural decay.
  • Massive unemployment and youth discontent.
  • Poor, insensitive (and in some cases, a dearth of) leadership.
  • Religious, ethnic, and political intolerance.
  • Poverty of both mind and material.
  • Deficiencies in our educational system.
  • Economic slump that we seemingly have no answers for.

Nigeria has the resources (both human and material); we have the brains, the ideas, the education, the skills, the knowledge, in other words, we have the potential and everything to make a great nation; a peaceful, progressive, and developed nation that could be the envy of the comity of nations.

Unfortunately for us, what we DO NOT have is simple, collective, and individual Honesty and Sincerity of Purpose. Let’s face it, we are not sincere and honest in this country. Truth has also gone out through the window and dissipated into thin air. Hypocrisy and sycophancy are the order of the day. Truth and Sincerity are very hard to determine, to see, to hear and to speak in Nigeria. Nobody says it, hear it, or adhere to Truth. Truth is like the proverbial needle in the haystack – impossible to find! Those who sometimes wish to express the Truth soon find themselves in trouble, or worse, dead.

Majority of the citizens, supposedly patriotic and well learned and capable, elected, elevated, or appointed into government and public positions end up being corrupt, even if not corrupt before their appointments. For many of our politicians, they are corrupt before election into public office. Some are even proven wanted criminals. The lure of easy money, the gaping loopholes in the system, the pressure from their communities all intensify their eventual capitulation to greed, selfishness, insensitivity and ultimately, corruption. And once you start, you cannot stop; so, the looting is endless, and with so much lucre, (that is, money regarded as sordid or distasteful or gained in a dishonourable way), coming into a jealously centralised government, the opportunity to “chop” what you can is infinite.

It never fails. Supposedly acclaimed, good men/women, brandishing CVs that are as long as the arm, with enviable records of achievement, education, travels around the world, recognition and accolades from respected and respectable organisations and individuals all over the world, eventually disappoint us when their brazen corruption is exposed. Or rather, they expose themselves when they start flaunting wealth that the public know are not commensurate with the positions they hold or have held. They never cease to astound me with their greed and corruption, despite their educational and academic brilliance, global knowledge, and experience, etc. Some, if not most, even came from so humble a background that one would expect a God-fearing, kind-hearted man/woman who had gone through such hardships and poverty in their early lives, would take it as personal and humanitarian crusades to serve the people and ensure that those he/she is elected or appointed to serve do not undergo such hardship. Alas! it doesn’t turn out to be so, rather, they want to acquire everything acquirable within such a short time to make up for their childhood hardship and poverty.

It is very true, that power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely. Power, position, and wealth are really weapons of the devil against Man. The corruption of the political class, the military, private business and industrial communities and security agencies is bringing Nigeria to its knees. On a personal note, if you ask Nigerians, you find that there is no allegiance to the Nigeria state but a system to take from and not to contribute into.

Government contracts can only be obtained by bribery; and if you do, nobody cares if you execute it or not. Nobody does anything without demanding or accepting some form of illicit gratification. It is a vicious cycle of corruption and misappropriation of funds. Thus, what should take one million naira to do will eventually cost ten million, plus poor workmanship. And we wonder where the money is, wonder where the contractor is and wonder where the government officials are. It is unending.

What is happening is that the Nigerian state is trying to re-invent itself when it has disallowed itself to evolve with the people. I believe if the institutions and structures are working the average Nigerian will not go into these extremities of corruption, swindling, armed-robbery, kidnapping, prostitution, and all other ills we are now experiencing in a previously strict, traditional, disciplined and morally-upright society.

Who do we blame? Do we keep on blaming the British for colonising us? Do we keep blaming the slave raiders (and our very own slave culture even before the arrival of the white man) for our current afflictions? Or do we continue to blame modern imperialists like the US, UK, China, etc.? Coloured television arrived in Nigeria before countries like Germany and many European countries and Australia. The discovery of oil in very large commercial volumes in the Niger Delta changed all the progress we were gradually making towards modern nation development and the easy money from the black gold oozing easily from beneath the ground and the creeks made it equally easy for the military to jettison all carefully and brilliantly laid development plans for the country towards agriculture and industrial growth. The result? A nation that has abandoned all sense of planning, and working hard and conscientiously for what they want – a lazy, indolent, focus-less and visionless nation whimpering on the edge of delusion, degradation and abject poverty of the mind and the physical; praying to God to come down and help them out without themselves wanting to lift a finger. A society where mediocrity gains a lot of mileage, and is preferred over merit, where almost everybody wants to work very little or less, but earn very large. A country where corruption is celebrated and honesty and truth are abhorred, unrewarded and shunned. Mediocrity rules and holds sway in the country and consequence is “res ipsa loquitur” (the thing speaks for itself). A country where abnormality has now become normal, and normality is considered abnormal.

It will take very strong, highly-disciplined men/women, with absolute and unflinching fear of God, consideration for the lives and plight of other less fortunate people, kind-heartedness and sensitivity for the plight of other people who are not even related to you, to resist the temptations posed and presented when in positions of power and authority, when in charge or have access to billions of naira/dollars. And it would seem there is a dearth of such men/women in our society, because, according to some schools of thought and opinions, some of us shouting against these injustices and corruption, are just waiting for our turn to get into power or appointment to grab/steal our own share of the loot. In fact, I have been personally accused of such over the years.

However, I fervently believe there is hope…! We know from the testimonies and occasional glimpses of hope from people who are fighting independent battles to correct the system.

Can you and I change our nation’s current course? I am positive that we can, in many ways and with the right people and disposition.

In many conversations with fellow Nigerians, I could feel an urgent need to embrace real change, to create for us and for our children, a society with hope, opportunities, and fairness for all. But we need to do the walk, not the talk anymore. And this is what is missing. But maybe it won’t happen until the goat gets pushed to wall and has no alternative but to fight back.

But do we have to wait until that happens? When will that happen? What will make it happen?

Reminds one of ‘Animal Farm’. Lately I saw the fantastically ‘animated’ version of the Orwellian classic. Real animals were engaged and made to come alive with CGA overlay assists. What set out as a relaxing fun turned out to be an insightful journey, taking in the stunted growth that has characterised our beloved country, the many failures that are borne out of our individual traits and collective ineptitude, the myriad of excuses that are often pleaded in extenuation of our ability to rise even to the simplest of national challenges. I could go on and on. It seems that we never go low on excuses…many of us love our country dearly, and long to do something positive but where do we start? I am not talking about investing per se as I have no such accumulation. However, a few people are in our league who honestly want the country and the general populace to prosper, but cannot show up, because the bad seem to have overwhelmed the good. The love of money has so badly eaten into the moral fabric of our existence that you can never be sure of what to expect from any quarters: political, clergy, academia or what have you. It’s sad, sad, sad…

We have to do it NOW!!!

Ass of Olympian Chloe Kim fires radio host

Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

Chloe Kim, a 17-year-old snowboarder, made headlines for winning gold in the women’s snowboard half-pipe competition Monday night.

While commenting on about Kim’s performance in the sports, radio co-host Patrick Connor made comments during a discussion about the Games on Barstool Sports’, “Dialed-In with Dallas Braden.”

According to Patrick Connor “Her 18th birthday is April 23, and the countdown is on, baby that’s what I like about them, high school girls.”

“She’s fine as hell! If she were 18, you wouldn’t be ashamed to say that she’s a little hot piece of ass. And she is. She is adorable. I’m a huge Chloe Kim fan.” Connor continued.

While Connor made the comments on a Barstool Sports show, he was fired on Wednesday by KNBR, a radio station in San Francisco where he also worked as a radio host.

The sexualized comments came during the second episode of the “Dialed-In with Dallas Braden” show. The other hosts could be heard laughing in response to Connor’s remarks.

People on social media quickly took issue with the nature of his comments, and the next day the show’s host, Braden, addressed the incident and gave Connor a stern warning while they were on-air together.

Connor then addressed the comments and apologized to Kim, Kim’s father, his own “lady,” Barstool management, his male co-hosts and the show’s female intern and the Bay Area.

“I just want to address my behaviour yesterday quickly,” he said. “I’m super embarrassed. If I were to slice up the pie chart of my comments they were, one slice was dumb; another slice was super insensitive and disrespectful. Kinda needy. It was pretty needy, and that’s not a good look. And I’ve taken a pretty good beating, and I effin deserve it. Don’t feel sorry for me.” Said cornor

War in Nigeria as northern governors approve ranching

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 20 Second

Following the recent developments in trying to solve the problem of Fulani herdsmen invasion in Nigeria, the Federal government has carved out strategies to develop ranches in all parts of the federation to house the Fulani herdsmen settle with their cattle and reduce the nomadic movements around the country.

The Northern governors’ Forum held Thursday expressed concern on ranching in Nigeria, but they have in the meeting backed the movement to build ranches all over the country. After listing the benefits of ranches to Nigerians the governors noted that this would be the best solution to the constant communal crises in the federation.

If the building of ranches is adopted in Nigeria, there would be many ranches in every state of the federation, just like there are many farms in the states. The ranches would not only harbour the cattle but also the Fulani men that own the cattle together with the buyers from all parts of the nation.

The possession of heavy fire powers by the Fulani herd’s men is what scares many Nigerians, as most argue that the clashes and killings are multiplying now because the Fulani’s were given free movement to all parts of the country and carrying guns with them.

Though the southern parts of Nigeria see this as an invasion rather than a solution to the ongoing crisis. They, however, stated categorically that Fulani’s want to invade the country under the rulership of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and as such would not support the building of ranches in all parts of the nation to avoid turning Nigeria to animals farm.

Call Your National Security Adviser to Order – Groups Tell President Buhari

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

Niger Delta Amnesty Vendors’ Forum in collaboration with Coalition of Niger Delta Ex-agitators/Justice for the Abandoned Youths of Nigeria, today marched through major streets in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to call the National Security Adviser, Gen. Mongonu to stop interfering with the day to day administration of the Presidential Amnesty Office in the interest of peace in the Niger Delta region.

Briefing newsmen at the end of the massive rally which started from the beginning of Ada-George road to terminate at Agip round about by Ikwerri road, President of the Niger Delta Amnesty Vendors’ Forum, Tari Okosi and Coordinator of the Coalition for Niger Delta Ex-agitators/Justice for the Abandoned Youths of Nigeria, Comrade Okpakariari Eferebo lamented how the National Security Adviser has shut down the Amnesty Office, warning that the interference of the NSA could trigger fresh simultaneous violent protests across the region.

They called on the President to use his good offices to intervene before the issue gets out of hands. Meanwhile, the groups have expressed fears that the National Security Adviser may be playing out a prepared script from politicians who are bent on derailing the President’s new vision for the Niger Delta region.

In a swift reaction to the unfolding developments at the Presidential Amnesty Office, Coordinator of the Patriotic Niger Deltans for Good Governance, Comrade Adonba Amgbare, pointed out that the ongoing undue interference from the National Security Adviser to the President has come to the people of the Niger Delta region not as a surprise, judging from the recent provocative statements from some persons in the north.

According to him, the current reported actions of the National Security Adviser against the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme may invalidate all the milestones of the present administration in achieving sustainable peace in the Niger Delta region, saying that the people of the area are satisfied with what the Presidential Amnesty Office under Gen. Paul Boroh (Rtd) is doing in the region.

Signed By

Tari Okosi and Comrade Okpakariari Eferebo  for President of the Niger Delta Amnesty Vendors’ Forum and Coalition for Niger Delta Ex-agitators/Justice for the Abandoned Youths of Nigeria

Keep it simple and honest, make our budget accessible -River APC

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 22 Second

Again, the Rivers State governor, Barr. Nyesom Wike has presented a budget of N510 billion to the Rivers State House of Assembly Thursday with the usual fanfare. Expectedly, so he did for 2016 and 2017. However, presentation of the budget proposals remains the last Rivers citizens see of their actual budgets thereafter. All attempts to compel the governor to make public the final appropriation laws (budgets) have met the brick wall. This is at variance with what obtains in all other states of Nigeria and the federal government where budgets are easily placed in the public domain for everyone to access at will.

The Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, will not accept a repeat of what happened in the past two years where the governor vehemently refused to make public the state’s budgets. We are pleased to know that a coalition of civil society groups is already in court to compel the Rivers State governor to make public the previous state’s budgets.  As a party, we will not refrain from lending a strong voice to the clamour to give the public access to the state’s budgets.

At the risk of sounding pessimistic, early signs already indicate that Rivers people should not expect any cheery news from the present budget proposal presented by Gov. Nyesom Wike last Thursday.

In his budget proposal presentation speech, nothing suggested that the budget will be placed in public space this time around as the governor made no comments on the clamour by the people to be given access to their budgets. His refusal to react to that clamour clearly suggests that he will continue ignoring the people and keep holding the state budgets hostage.

As a political party, the APC team of budget experts is carefully studying the appropriation bill presented to the Rivers State House of Assembly. However, we note that the actual kernel of a budget which the team will be evaluating is whether all the processes the House should put the bill through are conformed with because that is largely what will legitimise the final outcome or invalidate it . Another is whether this time around the final budget will be placed in public space just as all other

states in Nigeria including the federal government do.

Meanwhile we will continue to ask why the present government has refused to follow in the footsteps of all previous administrations in Rivers State especially that of the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi (in which the present governor served as Chief of Staff) by placing the state budgets in public space so that Rivers people and other critical stakeholders can access them. Gov. Nyesom Wike needs to provide an answer except if there is none and that will confirm our worst fears.

President Buhari is not under pressure to declare State of Emergency in the State – APC Says

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 20 Second

Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) said the party has read the disgusting tissue of lies contained in Governor Nyesom Ezebunwo Wike recent unguided outburst that President Muhammadu Buhari told him during his recent visit to Aso Rock that he (Buhari) was under intense pressure from Rivers APC leaders to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, said she wish to unequivocally state that President Muhammadu Buhari never complained to Wike of any pressure to declare State of Emergency in Rivers State.

Rivers State APC in a  press statement circulated on Monday by Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze the Media Consultant to the Rivers State APC Chairman,  Dr Davies Ibiamu Ikanya further expressed shock that Governor Wike could bring the exalted office of the Governor to odium in such a reckless manner to ascribe to President Buhari something he never said.

The party stated that, “to the best of our knowledge the three issues that Wike discussed with Mr. President were the issues of the Ogoni Clean Up, the Nkpogu Junction incident with Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi where attempt was made on the life of the Minister. The other
issue discussed was the detention of Wike’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) for one week”.

The party therefore urged Governor Wike not only to call himself to order but formally apologise to President Buhari for ascribing words he never uttered to him to score cheap publicity always associated with him.

The party pointed out that Governor Wike’s hatred for both President Buhari and Amaechi is legendary since the two masterminded the ouster from office his ATM machine, (Dr Goodluck Jonathan) under whose watch our common patrimony was looted with impunity. Because of this, Wike is ever ready to use any forum to castigate, insult and malign the persons and personalities of these two great leaders not minding the dire consequences.

The party stated that Wike exhibited his trade mark when he granted audience to the outgoing Anglican Bishop of Niger Delta Province last Friday where he falsely ascribed to Mr. President words he never uttered and further abused and incited Nigerians against the President stating that he Buhari considers the lives of cows more precious to that of the lives of Nigerians.

Wike’s words as captured by Simeon Nwakaudu his Special Assistant on
Electronic Media, “in other climes if ten persons are killed, the President visits to personally assess the situation but here in Nigeria our country has become a security nightmare with 73 persons killed in Benue and mass burial organised for them, with the Presidency acting as if nothing happened. Human lives are not respected. In fact, the lives of cows and chicken appear to be more important than human lives. This has nothing to do with politics. Let us not trivialize the catastrophy that has befallen Nigeria.”

With these inciting words, one can easily state that it is Wike that is courting for state of emergency in Rivers State. This notwithstanding, let us reiterate that nobody is interested to declare state of emergency in Rivers State not minding the abysmal failure of Wike to ensure protection of the lives and properties of Rivers State people.

The party reassures Nigerians particularly the good people of Rivers State that not minding the abysmal failure of Wike in governance in Rivers State that, “we will ensure that he Wike no longer constitute himself as a security challenge to Rivers State and her people as we have no other State to call our own than Rivers State.”

The party observed that Wike in his last Saturday’s outing with Rhythm 93.7 FM told the bewildered world that he was briefed by someone very close to him in his office that he can talk to Don Wanny and his boys to keep calm just after the killings in Omoku but he said NO that their time was up. If this is not vindication of our stand that Wike’s administration has been hobnobbing and romancing with this deadly gang, let him tell the world who this fellow very close to him that he suggested that he should discuss with Don Wanny is.

Apart from the above, the party stated that, nobody is fueling insecurity in Rivers State but the Governor himself that, if not let Wike tell the world where he kept all the Arms the Rivers State Government claimed to have collected from cultists and militants and explain if these arms are not part of the arms kept to arm his yet to be formed Neighborhood Watch gang which he intends to use to cause more damaging mayhem in Rivers State to boast his chances during the 2019 gubernatorial election knowing very well that he stands no chance in any election without violence.

The party concluded by stating that, “Wike need to be watched if our nascent democracy is not to be truncated by his wicked ambition to once again impose himself on Rivers State to the detriment of the growth and industrialization of Rivers State as envisioned by the APC regime if elected.”

Fani-Kayode reacts to Prof. Muhammad’s claim that Benue belongs to Fulani herdsmen

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 6 Second

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation minister, on Thursday reacted to statement credited to Professor Umar Labdo Muhammad of the Faculty of Humanities, Northwest University, Kano that Benue State belongs to the Fulanis by right of conquest.

Fani-Kayode, who berated the University Don, noted that every land Fulani herdsmen took from the Indigenous people in the past will be “reclaimed and retaken.”

In a tweet via his Twitter handle, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chieftain warned that “those the gods wish to destroy they drive mad.”

He wrote, “Benue state belongs to the Fulani by right of conquest -Umar Muhammed.

“Those whom the gods wish to destroy they first drive mad.Every inch of land that was taken by the Fulani invaders from the indigenous people Nigeria over the last 200 years shall be reclaimed and retaken.”

The University Don had predicated his claim on the fact that half of Benue State is part of the Bauchi Emirate and also half of the Adamawa Emirate.

In a post on his Facebook, Muhammad stressed that by extension, Benue is “part and parcel of Sokoto Caliphate” as such nobody has the right to expel Fulani from the state.

Muhammad also stated that Fulani are the largest single nation in the African continent and they have “remained unbeatable throughout their history.”

President Goodluck Jonathan not rich, in debts over 2015 election‎

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 35 Second

A former Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Power, Ambassador Godknows Igali has described ex-President Goodluck Jonathan as one of Nigeria’s poorest former leaders.

Ighali speaking with journalists in Abuja over the weekend revealed that Jonathan was still struggling to pay borrowed money for 2015 election.

Igali further described Jonathan as an insolvent person living on his pension.

He said: “Am glad that some of you Journalists are privileged to know where he (Jonathan) lives and where he has his private offices in this country. I do not think President Jonathan can be considered a very rich man.

“You must realize that none of those corruption allegations has been personally linked to him. Jonathan is not a rich man, take it from me. He may be comfortable but not rich. But l know that his pension as a former president is enough to take care of him.

“Indeed Jonathan is still struggling to pay some election liabilities from 2015 until today.

“Despite all the stories of flying billions, Jonathan borrowed money to prosecute some aspects of his election and he is struggling in different ways to meet up.

“There’s a lot of untruths that is being said about him, but l believe history will be very fair to him. He is a very simple man. His background and lifestyle are very simple,He is not jingoistic.

“Thank God some of you guys know where he has an office and where he lives in Maitama, Which former president of Nigeria lives in that kind of place?

“President Jonathan’s parlour in his Maitama house cannot accommodate more than 10 persons. Look at his dining table, it is like any other house in Maitama. The only way you will know that a former president of this country is living there is the presence of security men and which he is entitled to as a former president.”

Bishop Martins Uzoukwu of the Catholic Diocese of Minna on Wednesday appealed to political office holders to create projects that would alleviate poverty among the people of their various constituencies.

Uzoukwu told newsmen in Minna that democracy was all about meeting the expectations of the people through the provision of basic amenities that would impact positively on their development.

“Elected politicians and public-office holders must connect with their people and find out how best to alleviate poverty among them.

“They should support all economic programmes and trades of their people, irrespective of the political parties they belong,’’ he said.

He also called for the setting up of skills’ acquisition centres to train women and youths in various trades for them to become empowered.

He said that the centres would prepare the beneficiaries to with self sustaining skills to fight poverty.

Uzoukwu also advised government to institute a soft loan programme for the teeming unemployed youths.

According to him, unemployment and idleness have continued to widen the poverty gap in the country and pose a great threat to our collective existence.

He explained that providing job opportunities for the teeming youths would help to fight insurgency, cattle rustling and militancy in the country.

He appealed to Nigerians to support the efforts of the Federal Government in the fight against criminal activities by offering intelligence information to tackle crime and criminality in the society.

He said that only collective efforts from all residents would reduce crime in the society and also attract foreign investors for the overall development of the country.
