NIGERIA: Politics and the Curse of Old Age

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 7 Second

The definition of old age depends on who you ask. At what age does a person stop getting older and actually become old? When does old age begin? Pew Research Center, a Washington DC-based fact tank put this old age question to 3,000 adults from 18-65. Old age begins at 68; under 30, old age begins at 60; Above 30 said before 60; as people age old age moves back; the older people get the longer they think it takes for a person to reach old age; under 30 and 49 think old age begins at 69; 50-64 believe old age starts at 72; 65 and older said old age begins at 74; On average women said old age begins at 70; men said 66.

The politics of the 4th republic is mimicking the politics of the second republic (1979-83). The 75-year-old Rt. Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (Zik) was the presidential candidate of the Nigeria’s Peoples Party (NPP). The Natioanal Party of Nigeria (NPN) said Zik did not pay his tax to which Zik famously replied "I paid my tax as and when due." NPN politicians of Igbo extraction started lampooning Zik as the grand old man; "Okenye nagwo ofe" (deceitful old man). Igbo cartoonists joked with his age and asked him to quit the stage. After the elections, Zik in his now famous treatise adroitly titled: "History will vindicate the just" angrily said:

"I am 78 years…God shall punish the wicked…those who are using the print and electronic media to make mockery of old age…they will not live to be old…they will die unwept and unsung . . . the futility of insulting old age…it is unAfrican and inhuman to make mockery of old age, because Africans and all human beings pray to God to prolong their life-span. Nevertheless, those Nigerian politicians who indulge in this abomination shall not live to be old…Amen! Amin! Ise! Ashe!"

Sooner than later the said politicians started dying one after the other. Whether the cause(s) of their deaths were due to Zik’s curse; jinx; evil spell; or just foredoom is conjectural but the deaths had an eerie proximity to Zik’s curse. Recently, Femi Fani-Kayode, Director of Media and Publicity of the Jonathan Presidential Campaign Organisation inferred that the 72-year-old Muhammadu Buhari is "mortally ill" from prostate cancer. Raising fears about the health of a man who could become president recalls the presidency of Umaru Yar’Adua who died in office in 2010 from a kidney- related ailment.

Fani-Kayode said ". . . to prove to the Nigerian people that he really is as ‘fit as a fiddle’… by taking a brisk walk or even jogging . . . before any of his rallies . . ." The Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose gave Buhari a presidential death-wish and employed the language of a guttersnipe in newspaper adverts to drag his gubernatorial office in Ekiti to the mud. U.S. President Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, 17 days shy of his 70th birthday; China's Paramount Leader Hu Jintao was 66 while Japanese premier Taro Aso was 68. India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh left office at 76. South African President Jacob Zuma is 72. Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe is 90. Silvio Berlusconi, three-time Italian Prime Minister took office in 2008 at 72.

The comparison of Buhari’s health with the late president Yar’Adua is not tenable. Yar’Adua never really campaigned. At a PDP presidential rally at MKO Abiola stadium in Abeokuta (2007) outgoing President Olusegun Obasanjo called PDP presidential candidate Yar’Adua over his cell-phone: "Umoru! Umoru!! Can you hear me?" Yar’Adua was in a German hospital. Even 88-year-old Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, did not show signs of senility or doddery when he hollered "Buhari is too old to be president". Buhari campaigns energetically in two separate rallies in different states a day standing erect like an old soldier.

The age of a man is not indicative of his health status; the fountain of youth is not predicated on good health. Buhari may even be healthier than some of his younger political opponents. Old age must not be trampled upon in whatever guise for the sake of votes. In Greek mythology, Geras was the god of old age. It was considered a virtue whereby the more gēras a man acquired, the more fame, excellence and courage he was considered to have. I hope that General Muhammadu Buhari will not acquire the gēras to imitate Zik by placing a "curse" on those "who shall not live to see old age".

NIGERIA: Fayose Tells APC to Allow Buhari to Seek Medical Treatment Abroad

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 46 Second

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has advised the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to allow the party’s presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, to seek medical care abroad.

Fayose has controversially claimed that Buhari is not healthy and recently placed an advert in newspapers to that effect.

The governor, who belongs to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alleged that Buhari was to seek medical care in the US recently but the trip was cancelled because the “secret” was leaked to the media, reported online news medium, The Cable.

In a statement issued by his media office, Fayose said: “In all the campaign rallies held by the APC, Buhari never spoke for more than six minutes.

“Buhari will just utter some words that he had rehearsed and any attempt to bring in new words always result to confusion in his brain due to senility. That was the reason he called his running mate Osunbade instead of Osinbajo and also referred to Imo State as Ibo State.

“This is clear evidence of ill-health, old (age) and senility.  Those packaging Buhari to achieve their personal ambition of gaining unhindered access to the wealth of Nigeria  should fear God and allow this old man to take care of his health.”

He insisted “Buhari is old and sick”, alleging that they had programmed Buhari to travel to the US on January 26.

“As a cover-up,  the APC cabal sold a story to the press that Buhari was invited to attend a programme in the US by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

“Interestingly, the CSIS programme was billed for January 26, the same day Buhari was said to have planned his medical trip to the US.

“However, the programme was cancelled, leaving Buhari with no excuse to travel and instead of them to allow the man to travel as he had planned, the APC cabal, who are obviously more interested in the presidency than Buhari’s welfare are urging him on,” Fayose said.

Election Violence: Northern Group Reports Buhari to US

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 52 Second

A group of northern pro-democracy activists under the aegis of the  Northern Coalition for Democracy and Justice (NCDJ), has reported the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC), General Muhammadu Buhari, to the government of the United States of America (USA), asking it to facilitate his prosecution for his role in the post-election violence of 2011.

The group, in a letter to the United States Secretary of States, Senator John Kerry, which was also copied to the US Ambassador to Nigeria, stated that the assistance of the US has become imperative in order to help Nigeria stem the tide of election violence in the 2015 election.

In the letter dated January 25 and titled: ‘The role of General Muhammadu Buhari in the 2011 post-election violence in Nigeria,’  which was signed by Dr. Ibrahim Baba , Secretary Research and Documentation, Mr. Yunana Shubkau, Publicity Secretary and Umar Farouk, Secretary General, the NCDJ said it had dragged General Buhari to the International Criminal Court but needed the backing of the US to have Buhari repatriated to the court.

The letter read in part: “Conducts of political actors particularly statements credited to Buhari and others in the year 2012, 2013 and 2014 during the build up to the 2015 elections is in the context of politically motivated sectarian violence. And a threat to the conduct of peaceful, free, fair and transparent elections in Nigeria.

“Therefore as an integral part of the international community, the US has an unambiguous obligation to facilitate the prosecution of individuals responsible for the 2011 post-election violence recorded in Nigeria and to checkmate reoccurrence of the same dastardly act in 2015 during the general elections in Nigeria.

“NCDJ instituted legal action for human rights violation against Buhari before the ICC at the Hague. It is in view of the ample video, audio and documented evidence to support a prosecution against him at our disposal that we urge the United States Government to facilitate his hand over to the International Criminal Court as there is incontrovertible evidence against him which supercedes that of Bagbo of Ivory Coast and Uhuru Kenyata of Kenya

“As vanguards of accountability in our dear country, we shall continue to conscientise and mobilise the citizenry to resist all forms of intolerance in Nigeria.”

Last week, the group’s prosecutor, Goran Sluiter, a human rights lawyer leading the prosecution of  Buhari at the Hague said in a press conference in Abuja that the group was poised to prosecute Buhari.

It was also confirmed that Buhari has cancelled his planned trip to the US.
It was reported that the US-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), which invited the general to the US, had cancelled the programme.
The report indicated that Buhari cancelled the trip based on changing schedules.
Investigations however revealed that the cancellation of the trip might not be unconnected with indications that the US might act upon the petition by the NCDJ.

It was also gathered that the Buhari camp believes that Buhari was being bogged down by persistent complains about his alleged Human rights violation, as well as issues revolving around his certificate.

Sources in Abuja confirmed that Buhari has become wary of the barrage of questions that would confront him in the US over his role in the 2011 violence and the issue of his certificate saga.

NIGERIA: Buhari’s Past Atrocities Will Haunt Him, Says Jang

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 32 Second

Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), committed a lot of atrocities against politicians while in office as a military head of state, noting that such atrocities will count against him in the forthcoming election.

In particular, he said Buhari allowed the military to get into his head; hence he was going about jailing innocent citizens and politicians.

Jang stated these on Wednesday during the PDP campaign rally in Barkin Ladi, notin: “Buhari humiliated politicians as head of state, I was in the military with him, and those in the military then (including me) know him very well.

“If I were him, I would bow out of the presidential race. The things Buhari did to politicians in the past would haunt him in the present and future.

“Buhari allowed the military to get into his head; he was going about jailing innocent citizens and politicians. And he is still saying he would renovate Kirikiri prisons, for who?

“Now that he is a politician, he should go and taste the prisons in the same manner he sent other politicians to jail while he was a military head of state.

“Our President, Jonathan, is a true democrat and the people of Plateau do not have any problem with him, we will come out and vote massively for him on February 14.”

He reassured President Goodluck Jonathan that his state would vote massively for him and all the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates in the elections.

Also speaking at the campaign rally, PDP gubernatorial candidate in the state, Gyang Pwajok, called on the people of the state to come out en masse and  vote for the PDP in the forthcoming elections. He assured the people of his readiness to move the state to greater heights if voted into power.

“This election is about the people; we need to come together as one so that we can break the barriers of religion, ethnicity and geography,” he said.

He promised to work with the elders and youths to accelerate the development of the state.

On his part, the Director General of the Gyang  Pwajok governorship campaign organisation, Mr. Daniel Kungmi, said the Plateau people would reject  Buhari at the polls.

Kungmi alleged that Buhari is a selfish politician who does not have the interest of the state at heart, and the people of the state would not support him with their votes.

Speaking earlier, acting chairman of the PDP in the state said there was no factional PDP in the state, calling on the people to disregard those who said they had formed a factional PDP and are trying to reform it.

“Some of these members, we are aware, are romancing with the APC; one of them just recently gave out his campaign office to the APC. And the party would not stay idle and watch their good works being destroyed by desperate politicians.”

APC Wants UN, AU to Investigate Political Killings in Rivers

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 57 Second

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has raised the alarm over what it called a systematic killing of its members and called on the international community to investigate the deaths with a view to putting a stop to it.

The party specifically called on Amnesty International, the International Red Cross, the relevant organs of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union and the United Nations (UN) to immediately commence independent inquiries into the gruesome attacks and killings in Rivers State.

The state Chairman of the APC, Dr. Davies Ikanya, made the appeal at an international press conference addressed by the party in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

Reading from a text titled: ‘Peoples Democratic Party’s Bloodletting and Acts of Terror in Rivers State – The Road to Perfidy,’ Ikanya chronicled cases of violent attacks and killings of members of the APC by persons suspected to be members of the rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

He said most of the political violence and crimes in the state had been aided and abetted by the police.

“Most of these heinous crimes have been aided and abetted by the police. In some cases, they simply looked the other way whilst the crimes were committed, whilst in some others they arrested the APC complainants or members or supporters on phantom charges just to neutralise the political influence of the APC in the area,” he alleged.

He added that the plight of the APC in the state “is akin to that of a people in a military in a conquered and occupied territory. PDP thugs and hirelings practically commit murders under the watchful eyes and protective eyes of the police without as much as a slap on the wrist.”
He, however, said the scale of violence was increasing as the date of the elections approaches.

“As the 2015 general election approaches, the scale, magnitude and intensity of the orchestrated violence against members of the APC is assuming a frightful dimension necessitated that we cry out to the Nigerian and international community,” he lamented.

On what the party had done to protect its members, Ikanya said, “Our initial reactions to these flagrant abuses and physical attacks were in the form of strident calls to the president to use his high office to cause the cessation of unprovoked hostility and violence against our people.”

He, however, said the president has not done anything to protect the people while the violence has continued.

Reacting to the spate of alleged attacks and killings, former Petroleum Minister, Prof. Tam David-West, described Nigeria as a failed state which has lost the capacity to protect its citizens and their property.

David-West, who was at the press conference, said, “From what I am seeing today in Rivers State, we have a failed state in Nigeria. The Nigerian State has failed. The constitution is clear: Government is to protect lives and property of citizens. A government that cannot protect the lives and property of its citizens is not worth the name and has no business being there for one second.

“I don’t belong to any political party but I support causes and people. I stand for a government that knows that 19 is bigger than 16.”

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Senator Magnus Abe, has debunked the insinuation that he was at a logger-heads with the APC Governorship Candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, having lost out in the party’s primary, last December.

The PDP had attributed attacks on members of the APC to internal wrangling within the APC following the way the Peterside emerged candidate of the party at the expense of Abe.

Abe said it was not true as he had no problems with Peterside, adding that he was fully part of the campaign to return Peterside to the Brick House.

Speaking at the press conference, Abe, who is seeking to return to the Senate for the second term, said he was working for Peterside’s victory at the governorship election.

His words: “There is no feud between me and Dakuku. He is my friend; in fact, he is my younger brother, we are not just friends. My supporters are working to make sure that he is elected as the governor and that is what I am also doing and that is why I am here

“I nominated the Director General of the Dakuku’s campaign organisation. He is not just my nominee, but one of the best hands we have. If I wanted to fight Dakuku, I would have used him.”

PDP Seeking Spurious Court Injunction to Stop Election, Says APC

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 30 Second

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the presidency of pursuing an agenda to get its  candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), disqualified and have the elections postponed using a court injunction.

The opposition party also blamed the ruling party and presidency for orchestrating the ongoing campaign for the postponement of the election, despite their denials and the assurances by the ruling party that it is ready for the polls

While urging its members and supporters in particular, and all Nigerians in general, to remain vigilant and be firm in saying ‘no’ to election postponement, the APC appealed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) to ensure that the courts are not used as a tool to sabotage the elections and indeed the nation’s democracy.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said there was no clearer indication that the PDP and the presidency are the puppeteers behind the campaign to shift the elections than Wednesday’s newspaper advertorial plainly campaigning for the polls to be shifted,’’ the party said.

“This advert, which has the picture of President Goodluck Jonathan and the logo of the PDP – meaning they will be the sole beneficiaries of the postponement they are seeking – leaves no one in doubt that the ruling party and the presidency are pathologically dishonest, deliberately deceptive and chronically terrified about the elections,’’ it said.

The APC said now that all pretences were off and the sponsors of the election postponement campaign have been unveiled, Nigerians must reject them and their campaign.

‘’The campaign, which is hinged on the fact that many Nigerians have not collected their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs), is not sincere. If it is, the PDP and the presidency would have instead been urging Nigerians to go all out and collect their PVCs so that the election can hold. Why is this so impossible for them to do?

‘’Like we said earlier, what prevents the federal government from declaring a three-day public holidays to give Nigerians the opportunity to collect their PVCs? Why is it that only the PDP and its sponsored groups and individuals are the ones leading the campaign for election postponement, even as our party, the APC, has been campaigning for Nigerians to go and collect their PVCs?

‘’Is it not instructive that at least 26 political parties have joined the no-postponement campaign, while the PDP/presidency, as well as the lick-spittle individuals and groups who have been compromised in one way or another, continue to beat the drums of election shift?’’ the party said.

The opposition party wondered why the PDP and presidency would be second-guessing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which had said it was ready to go ahead with the elections, and that it would be distributing PVCs until the eve of the elections.

APC urged its members and supporters in particular, and all Nigerians in general to remain vigilant and be firm in saying ‘no’ to election postponement.

‘’We know that the next frontier in the ongoing battle by the PDP/presidency to get our candidate, Buhari, disqualified and have the elections postponed, is the court. We know they will seek to secure spurious injunctions to scuttle the elections, following the footsteps of the Association for Better Nigeria (ABN) in 1993. This is why we are appealing to the CJN,’’ APC said.

The party added: ‘’For the avoidance of doubt, we are ready for the elections and we will not, under any circumstance, support any shift in the dates for the elections, which were fixed more than a year ago.

‘’If the PDP and the presidency are not afraid of anything, we challenge them to come out today to denounce the campaign for election postponement, dissociate themselves from it and announce unequivocally that they are ready for the elections. Failure to do that, they stand accused of working hard to sabotage the elections and truncate the nation’s democracy.’’

Jonathan’s Performance Not Worthy of Endorsement, Says Afenifere Renewal Group

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 48 Second

The Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) on Wednesday said the performance of President Goodluck Jonathan since he effectively became Nigeria’s president “is not worth the endorsement of any patriotic citizen.”

The group, which is sponsored by former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, and is different from the mainstream Afenifere, also said it was not a party to the endorsement of Jonathan’s re-election bid as stated in different media reports.

The group stated this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kunle Famoriyo, describing the use of its insignia to promote the said endorsement as fraudulent and an attempt to deceive the Yoruba people.

“It has come to our notice that some broadcast stations are using ARG’s name and logo to promote the said endorsement. This is fraudulent and we wish to advise media houses to be wary of such fraudulent promoters especially now that public interest must be defended by the media,” the statement said.

“The ARG is not a party to the endorsement and does not in fact think the performance of the president since May 2010 is worth the endorsement of any patriotic citizen. We believe there is a difference between ‘transformation,’ which President Jonathan promised Nigerians in 2011 and mere ‘reform’ of the same governance culture that Nigerians have rejected.”

“The ARG does not dictate to the generality of the Yoruba people, rather it gives voice to their feelings and aspirations. The extensive consultations we have made showed that Yoruba people have come to a firm conclusion that they have been at the shorter end of the stick under the Jonathan-led government, under whose administration, nepotism and ethnocentrism have taken over as the emblem of our presidential politics.”

“ARG therefore stands with the aspirations of Yoruba people for change. As echoed in Abeokuta recently at the public lecture organised by the Ogun State chapter of ARG, the change that we demand include a public pledge to restructure the country in such a way that power will devolve to the most efficient federating unit.”

NIGERIA: Agbaje Evaded Tax for Four Years, Alleges Lagos Govt

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 54 Second

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said the state governorship candidate in the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Jimi Agbaje, had evaded land use charge for a period of four years contrary to section 24(f) of the 1999 Constitution.

The state government also said a breach of the section “is a criminal offence under our law. This had been the state of the human affairs since society was voluntarily formed. Anyone who advocates the non-payment of taxes is as guilty as tax evader.”

The state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, disclosed this at the state’s eight annual taxation stakeholders meeting in Ikeja, saying the payment of tax “is the first principle of the social contracts between the government and the citizens.”

At the meeting, Fashola said the payment of taxation “is prescribed by section 24(f) of the 1999 constitution. It states that it shall be the duty of every citizen to declare its income to the appropriate and lawful agency; and pay it promptly.”

He added that all the citizens, who have paid their taxes, “have shown that they are lawful citizens. Anyone who has failed to pay tax is a bad citizen. Breach of this responsibility is a criminal offence under our law.

“In 2007, Agbaje contested on the platform of Democratic People’s Alliance (DPA). The payment of tax is the first principle of the social contracts between the government and the citizens. It is an irreducible legal minimum of citizenship.

Fashola further alleged: “He is also a cheat. Such person benefit from the commonwealth – the roads, hospitals and other facilities provided by funds generated from taxes paid by the residents. Land use charge is grand rent and tenement rate; they were consolidated.”

He explained that Agbaje “manages a pharmacy called Jaykay Pharmacy. The drugstore is located at 9, Randle Close Apapa. His pharmacy has not paid land Use Charge for four years-2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.”

He added that the drugstore paid in 2013 and 2014 because Agbaje discovered that the election would be holding in 2015, noting that his pharmacy “is still owing the Lagos State Government N1, 629, 064.62.”

The governor urged the residents of the state “not to vote Agbaje in the next election. I know you have to vote next month but look at that candidate that would need to take over from me. Be careful of who to vote for. You will remember in 2007, he claimed that he was in DPA and later crossed to the PDP.

“Let us do that mathematic to see how many facilities that funds would have provided in our hospitals and stationeries in our schools. But this was the same person who was complaining that the state government spent 3 per cent of its budget on education.

“Local government is responsible for the management of the primary schools. Yet, he has withheld their taxes. This is the man who wants to be your next governor. I will advise you that you avoid deception and a tax evader.”

He added that the state government “dealt with 600 cases. But the important thing with these cases was that it showed increase in compliance. Some of the cases were not completed because the defaulters complied. The prosecution led to the recovery of hundreds of million for the state government.”

Maku: PDP is Jittery over My Chances in Nasarawa

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 27 Second

Former Minister of Information and the governorship candidate of  the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Nasarawa State, Mr. Labaran  Maku, has said  the attacks on him clearly shows that there is panic in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State following his emergence as the standard bearer of  the party.

Last week, at the PDP rally in Keffi to commence the campaign of the highly unpopular Alhaji Yusuf Agabi, the Senate President, David Mark, had accused Maku of being ungrateful because he left the PDP to emerge as the governorship candidate of APGA.

Maku said the attention had been drawn to repeated accusations by some leaders of the PDP, who continuously portray him as an ingrate for dumping the PDP to pursue his ambition in APGA.

His campaign team, in a statement issued  yesterday, by the  Director Publicity, Zakari Edego, said the  accusations  by the PDP chieftains amounted to blackmailing President Goodluck Jonathan of allegedly sponsoring Maku to contest the governorship of Nasarawa State on the platform of APGA.

The statemed read: “While Maku has high respect for Senator Mark and Dr. Ahmadu Ali and wishes not to join issues with them, he finds it especially curious that Senator Mark has remained mute over the defection in his own native Benue State of former Minister of State for Trade and Investment Dr. Sam Ortom and former PDP National Chairman Senator Barnabas Gemade who have gone to the opposition APC to contest for the governorship and senatorial positions respectively.

“Why has Mark not condemned these defections from his native Benue State? Why the undue attention on Maku and Nasarawa State? The import of these attacks on the APGA governorship candidate clearly shows that there is panic in the PDP in Nasarawa State following the emergence of Maku as the standard bearer of APGA.

“The truth of the matter is that Maku never told anyone even while contesting for the governorship ticket in the PDP that the president was behind him, neither did he suggest to anyone when he decamped to APGA that President Jonathan supported his decision.

“The PDP primaries was marred by irregularities including the change of delegates’ list and the manipulation of religion to impose Alhaji Yusuf Agabi as candidate. Some delegates’ lives were openly threatened at the ill-fated PDP primaries at Nasarawa town if they ever voted for  Maku.

“Before  Maku left the PDP, he followed the due process to seek redress over the highly bungled governorship primaries including petitioning the PDP governorship primaries Appeal Panel under the chairmanship of the National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mua’zu on the irregularities and other anti-democratic activities that led to the imposition of Agabi as the candidate of the PDP.

Edego said the Appeal Panel neither acknowledged nor invited Maku to defend the appeal he filed against the conduct of the governorship primary election.

“Since loyalty is crucial in party politics, why was Maku, a loyal party member and leader of the party in Nasarawa State for four years schemed out of the PDP primaries on the basis of religion?

Another pertinent question to ask is why scheme out a loyal party member who stood by the party and defended its policies and programmes at the state and national level for many years only to turn around to use his loyalty against him?

“The real issue in Nasarawa State is that some people within and outside the state believe that no Christian should ever be governor of Nasarawa state. Therefore, Maku is being persecuted purely for religious reasons.

The attacks on him are orchestrated to sustain the status quo in Nasarawa, which is already leading to destruction of the state by insurgents and mercenaries. This development portends danger to the future unity and development of Nasarawa state and our dear country.

“Maku’s well considered decision to leave PDP for APGA was actually intended to bring out the real hidden issues that have continued to undermine the unity and development of Nasarawa State.

“In doing so, he is fully aware that he will be blackmailed and maligned because he ever dared to challenge the status quo by those who want a divided state.

It is equally curious how some of the PDP chieftains openly expressed their anger because Maku is campaigning for the president in Nasarawa State even though  his new party, the APGA, has adopted Mr. President as its own presidential candidate because of his sterling leadership qualities and many achievements in office.

“The Maku Campaign Organisation views the sustained attack against the APGA candidate as a desperate measure by some leaders of the PDP to distract him from campaigning to defeat their candidate and the incumbent in the upcoming governorship elections as Maku is experienced enough in politics to know there is no way a sitting president will support him in an opposition party against his own party.

“We therefore urge our teeming supporters to disregard all insinuations and threats and sustain the tempo of the campaign for Maku and Jonathan to emerge as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and governor of Nasarawa State in this year’s general election,” the statement added.

PDP: APC’s Accusation of Cloning of Blueprint Admission of Amaechi’s Failure

The Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party Campaign Organisation has described the allegation that the party’s governorship candidate, Chief Nyesom Wike, cloned the blueprint of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Dr, Dakuku Peterside, as laughable and an admission of the failure of Governor Chibuike Amaechi.

In a statement issued by Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee of the PDP Campaigns in Rivers State, Mr. Emma Okah, the organisation said the PDP governorship blueprint which was presented Monday was a “product of a painstaking effort by highly reputable Rivers persons after considering the failures of the APC administration in the State.”

He said: “The PDP Governorship blueprint highlighted the shortcomings of the Amaechi eight years of embarrassing waste and showed the roadmap to salvage and develop the state, lift our people from the scandalous squalor that the APC government of Amaechi has inflicted on them and pursue dignified happiness for our masses through a regeneration of wealth and prosperity.

“Our blueprint is a simple way to show the APC administration the way to go. Therefore since Dakuku says we cloned his blueprint, it means the Dakuku blueprint also knocked down the Amaechi administration and pointed the way forward for the APC government led by Amaechi.

“Dakuku may not have intended such self-indictment or destruction but he is confused and not knowledgeable as to full import of the allegation that an unregistered work, not covered by copyright laws was cloned. It is for this reason and more that we consider Dakuku’s claims as premature, ill-conceived, baseless and the product of a demented brain.”

Giving an insight to the document presented by Wike, Okah said: “Our blueprint was straight to the point. It talked, among other things, about reducing the recurrent expenditure (excluding salaries and allowances) to release more funds for capital projects contrary to the Amaechi misappropriations.

“We referred to the high cost of flying the state executive jet by Amaechi everyday even on needless trips by his friends as a drain pipe; the wasted monorail project was not executed with the prior consent of the people as Amaechi did, and we emphasised the need to provide for retirement welfare of judicial officers as a means of enhancing the anti-corruption drive which Amaechi is not doing. These are all uncomplimentary results for the APC which Dakuku said we copied from him.”
