UGHELLI—ARCHBISHOP of the Benin Catholic Province, Bishop Augustine Akubueze, yesterday, said that the departed Senator Pius Ewherido had played his role on earth and gone to rest.

Meanwhile, two groups, Delta Focus Group and G25 Assembly, have described the late Senator  Ewherido as a courageous, brilliant, patriotic and dedicated Nigerian, who within his brief period of two years in the senate left his footprints on the sands of time.

Akubueze in his homily during the outing service organised for the late Ewherido at St Peters Catholic Church, Ewu-Urhobo, Delta State, urged the people to think of themselves rather than lament over Ewherido’s death.
Praying God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the pains caused by his death, he  said that they should be consoled by  the fact that he is resting in the bosom of God.

Speaking with newsmen, Chief Solomon Ahwinawhin, a former member of the House of Representatives, said that the news of the death of Ewherido came to him as a shock, adding that he would  miss him greatly.

Noting that Ewherido was a brother and friend, he said that Ewherido had value for his people and prayed God to grant him (Ewherido) eternal rest in his bossom.

Olorogun Taleb Tebite, member representing Ughelli South in the Delta State House of Assembly on his part, said that the Urhobo nation had lost a political icon in Ewherido, adding that he would be greatly missed by the people of Ughelli South and Urhobo at large.

Also speaking, Mr. Edoja Akpodiete, member representing Ughelli North Local constituency II in the Delta State House of Assembly, said the late Ewherido was a man of focus that gave direction to many people. Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Area, Chief Ovis Uto said the death of Ewherido was a great setback to the people of the council.

Resident Electoral Ofiicer, Cross River State, Mr. Mike Igini said: “The death of Ewherido is a huge loss to Urhobo nation. He served his fatherland very well to the admiration of our people.”

Delta Focus Group and G25 Assembly in a statement by their chairmen, Mr. Joshua Egun-Okoh and Mr.  Benedict Ebede, described Ewherido as a patriot due to the impact he made not just on his family, hometown, constituency, state but the country at large, “it is safe to say he is not dead because his legacy lives on.”

They noted that although he was a man with exceptional achievements, he never boasted about his achievements and contributions to his community and the society at large.

They said: “He was a silent achiever, who was referred to by his people as the Iroko. He provided shelter to many in his community, a gesture that cannot easily be forgotten. To most people from his state, he represented a unique voice of courage and boldness.

“Senator Ewherido was a lively, calculating and focused person. We can describe him as a man  of all seasons, who was always confident, vocal and comfortable in any company he found himself. His death was untimely and painful. He left his footprints on the sands of time.”
