Lagos, July 15, 2013 (NAN) Anthony Cardinal Okogie, Archbishop Emeritus of Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, on Sunday expressed displeasure over the recent brawl at the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Okogie, in a statement in Lagos, said the act of turning the hallowed chamber into a battle field by the lawmakers was unexpected of their personalities.
The statement said the crisis was shameful and should be condemned by every right thinking Nigerian.
“I condemn the crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly. More importantly, it is very disappointing to see our so-called honourables exchanging blows like gangsters.
“Such an act, if not checkmated, is an invitation to terrorism and gangsterism
“I call on every right thinking Nigerian to rise and speak against such unruly conduct by men who are supposed to be making laws of our land.
“It is unfortunate that the lawmakers who are expected to be men and women of integrity have allowed themselves to be used as pawns.
“They are supposed to be masses-oriented,’’ the statement said.
It commended the House of Representatives for declaring legislative emergency in the state.
The statement added that such a step was necessary in order to safeguard the integrity of governance in the country.
The statement said that those found culpable should be made to face the wrath of the law. (NAN)
