The former Governor of Adamawa State, Mr. Boni Haruna, has defected from the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Haruna, who was the immediate past governor of the state and leader of the ACN in the state, had declared his intention to rejoin the PDP Tuesday to journalists at his residence in Yola.
The former governor disclosed that he had confidence the PDP would defeat the merger of opposition parties in the 2015 general election.
“I was never chased out of the PDP; it was a personal decision to take a back step,” he said.
Haruna, while receiving the party’s membership card from the Chief Joel Madaki-led faction of the party in the state, urged PDP leaders in the state to stick to the party’s guidelines and constitution to make decision.
According to him: “My return is to mediate in the feud between the Joel Madaki and Kugama-led factions in order to resolve the lingering crisis, which had been bedevilling the party in the state.”
He added that the decision to retrace his steps was to enable him meet with Governor Murtala Nyako and the PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who were the leaders of the factions on how best to address the party’s crisis in the interest of peace.
Boni further explained that his return into the PDP fold with his supporters had put an end to opposition in the state.
“I am convinced that real sanity has taken place in the party, which was what led me to retrace my steps back to revalidate my membership,” he said.
He added that his return to the party with his supporters would put the PDP at a vantage position to clinch the governorship seat in the forthcoming election in the state.
“My coming to PDP will dislodged the merger of the opposition parties in the state,” he added.
Earlier, Madaki, who was represented by the Secretary, Mr. A. T. Shehu, while presenting Haruna with the party’s membership card, noted that the former governor was returning to the house he helped to build.
Shehu stated further that Haruna’s return to the party showed that the party had been fully sanitised, remarking that when the party state executive was reconstituted, its first point of call was at Haruna’s residence to woo him back with all the aggrieved members of the party in line with Tukur’s reconciliation move.
