NIGERIA: Sokoto Earmarks N1bn for Orphans, Destitute – Ramadan

Sokoto State government has earmarked N1 billion for the procurement of food items and clothing materials for orphans and needy persons for the Ramadan and Sallah festivities in the state.

Governor Aliyu Wamakko, made the disclosure Saturday while distributing  100 bags of grains and clothing materials to orphans and destitute in Bodinga Local Government Area of the state.

He stated that the gesture was meant to enable the needy persons observe the Ramadan fast and Sallah festivities with ease.

According to him, the gesture was part of his administration’s efforts to tackle poverty and squalor among the less-privileged in the society.

“This programme was introduced by the present administration to bring succour to the less-privileged so that they can observe the Ramadan fast with ease.

“So, this is part of our obligation as Muslims to assist the needy persons, especially during the holy month of Ramadan in line with Islamic tenets,” Wamakko said.

The governor explained that 6,600 bags of grains would be distributed to orphans and destitute across the 23 Local Government Areas of the state before the commencement of Ramadan.

Wamakko disclosed that this was in addition to similar programmes being executed by the state ’s Zakkat Endowment Committee aimed at assisting the physically-challenged persons and less-privileged in the society.

He charged officials responsible for the distribution of the materials to ensure fairness and justice.

In a remark, Chairman of the state Endowment Committee, Alhaji Lawal Maidoki, said the committee had been assisting poor patients at the Specialist Hospital and Usmanu Danfodio Teaching Hospital, Sokoto to settle their medical bills .

Maidoki stated that government introduced the payment of N6,500 monthly allowance to physically-challenged persons in the state in a bid to discourage street begging.

He added that the committee would redouble efforts towards improving the living conditions of orphans and destitute in the state.

Also speaking, the District Head of Bodinga, Alhaji Bello Abdulrauf, described the initiative as unprecedented, saying it would go a long way in alleviating the suffering of orphans and destitute in the state.

He commended the state government for the gesture and called on wealthy individuals in the state to assist the needy so as to receive blessings from God.
