Elder statesman and former Minister of Steel, Mr. Paul Unongo, has thrown his weight behind the agitation by the northern part of the country to occupy the presidential seat in 2015.

Unongo, who is the deputy leader and spokesman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), told journalists at his Makurdi residence, in Benue State, at the weekend, that the north had not been fairly treated, particularly in structural allocations, stressing that the ACF would rationalise on that at the appropriate time to ensure a victory for a northerner.

He said whoever the ACF supports would win the presidency, asserting that northerners could dominate politics in the country if they forge an agreement to do so going by their population.

The former minister, who expressed sadness over the recent election conducted by the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), noted that the governors were “chief executives, who were supposed to drive, institutionalise and solidify the democratic process”, noting that he felt insulted by their conduct.

“Our heads of government ruling Nigeria have not been able to do the right thing. These are jokers. You think this thing will not fall back on you and your country? What are you teaching your children?” Unongo lamented.

Unongo, who praised President Goodluck Jonathan for declaring state of emergency in some states of the north, added that the action was the proper thing to do since the peace of the country was being threatened.

On June 12 and the democratic process in the country, the NEF spokesman said nothing much had changed from what he described as the same military system, as true democracy in his opinion had respect for human dignity.
