President Goodluck Jonathan Monday called on judges and members of the bar to purse ethical codes that are the hallmarks of legal and judicial practice in the country and the world at large.
This, according to him, would to large extent, dispel all forms of unsavoury perception regarding the line of duty of judiciary.
Speaking during the inauguration of the Federal High Court complex in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, the president said the court was an expansion of justice delivery in the state.
President Jonathan, who was represented by the Vice-President, Alhaji Namadi Sambo, said: “I wish to call on all well-meaning Nigerians especially the elite and opinion leaders to galvanise their intellectual energies in the direction of deepening an objective understanding of the working of the judiciary in national development.”
He said: “I am aware that indeed, serving at the most trying times in our national journey, having sworn to uphold the letter and spirit of our constitution, we cannot afford to fail at this time when we have sworn to deliver in all spheres especially on the rule of law and natural justice.”
Speaking further, he noted that the judiciary has been living up to the expectations of Nigerians in dispensing justice which he said deserves applause, stressing that it should not be misconstrued to mean that it should play to the gallery but to serve as a morale booster to earn more praises from Nigerians.
“The transformation agenda of our administration is on course in fulfilling our promises, we are very proud to say that we have attained appreciable milestones. We are resolutely determined to fulfil our electoral promises as regard infrastructural development, jobs and wealth creation, economic stability, transparency, good governance and national security,” he added.
The president, however, said all hands must be on deck to strive toward contributing their quota at whatever level of socio-economic involvement, in order to attain loft aspirations as a nation.
