West African states Tuesday opened its seventh regional consultation on disaster management in Abuja, with a resolve to work towards developing regional framework on disaster emergency management.
The aim of the initiative is to strengthen the region's preparedness and response capacities in dealing with natural disasters in member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Speaking while declaring the sub-regional meeting open, the Minister of Environment, Hajia Hadiza Maillafia said Nigeria is presently facing a major problem of drought and desertification in the northern part of the country while erosion is threatening the people living in the South-East.
