Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Chibudum Nwuche said that the move to ensure that President Goodluck Jonathan is re- elected as President in the 2015 election has the tacit support of the entire leaders of the South-South zone of the country.
Nwuche who spoke against the background of the brewing political crisis that has engulfed Rivers State, said Governor Rotimi Amaechi is the architect of his woos, having wittingly worked to undermine the political interest of the people of the region.
The former Deputy Speaker who hails from Rivers State, said in an interview with THISDAY yesterday in Abuja that the issue of second term for President Jonathan has become a matter of serious interest for the people of the region who saw it as an opportunity that must never be allowed to slip from their hands.
“The President’s second term ambition has evoked strong sentiments from most stakeholders in the South-South to the extent that anyone who is working against it would be taken as going against the region’s interest,” he said.
Nwuche said if the performance of Jonathan is to be used as the yardstick, there is no doubt that Jonathan has been impressive when compared to his predecessors in office.
On the political crisis Rivers state, Nwuche said the issues has nothing to do with anyone outside the state, adding that It is entirely the problem of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers state. He accused the state governor of fueling the crisis by not carrying the key stakeholders along in the governance of the state and trying to undermine political interest of the people.
“In politics people have interest they want to protect and politicians have reasons for wanting to support a candidate. However after his re-election, the governor thought he is clever and began a journey of his own and people who helped him were left out of governance.
However these people being key stakeholders needed to have been consulted but Ameachi ignored them.
“I think Ameachi’s scheming is to retire every politician of note from the state from being relevant at the national level. It has nothing to do with the First Lady or witch haunting by FG as is awash in the media but with purely an internal crisis which the governor himself instigated.
“ Amaechi is making a mistake because he is going against the collective wish of the South-South. In the South-South, it is the desire of the majority of the people that Jonathan should run for a second term, and any one who stands against that is likely to be opposed by the people,” he said.
Nwuche condemned the outcry that came in the wake of the suspension of Governor Amaechi by PDPD, saying such hue and cry are not coming from the PPD family but ironically from the opposition.
He queried what interest does the opposition parties of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) have in a matter that is purely an internal affairs of the PDP.
“The ACN as a party has its internal problems, but PDP has never interfered in that. What is worrisome is why ACN is making a mole hill out of an ordinary disciplinary action meted out on an party member. More so it is a mere suspension and not expulsion and there are rooms for dialogue and reconciliation to resolve the matter,” he added.
