Soldiers had been drafted to Ile-Oluji, the headquarters of Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State where three persons were killed and eight policemen, including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and several civilians were critically injured.
The incident occurred during a two-day protest of the people of the community against the monarch of the town, the Jegun, Oba Stephen Suulade Adedugbe, who they accused of blocking the citing of a Federal Polytechnic allegedly proposed for the town.
The critically injured, according to the state Police Public Relations Officers (PPRO), Mr. Wole Ogodo, were referred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) for treatment.
The PPRO also disclosed that the police had arrested 47 suspects in connection with the violence, during which the monarch was chased out of the palace and parts of the palace torched.
Worried by the situation, which paralysed activities in the ancient town for three days running, the state government yesterday instituted a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the disturbance, essentially on the one in question and on any other similar one in the town.
The panel, according to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Rotimi Adelola, would look into the causes of the disturbance.
Adelola said the panel would also identify those involved in the crises and the extent of such persons involvement and recommend appropriate sanctions against them.
The panel is also mandated to stock of the losses or damages occasioned during the crises and make appropriate recommendations to government on the subject of the terms of references or any other matter connected with the crises.
The panel has Hon. Justice Nelson Adeyanju, as the chairman, while Mr. Ajose Kudehinbu, and Chief Olugbenga Ale, would serve as members with Mr. Fredrick Oye, serving as the secretary.
Meanwhile, the state Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, Wednesday stated that there was no plan to establish any polytechnic in the town explaining that the state government had not been contacted on any issue concerning citing of higher institution in the community.
The governor said the panel of inquiry set up on the matter was mandated to get to the root of the matter vowing that anybody found culpable would be dealt with in line with the law.
